Why Ugandans do not go gorilla trekking! Based on our survey.
Our research has revealed the following reasons why some Ugandans still find it challenging to go gorilla trekking in Uganda. This is based on a random survey our research team carried out in June 2014.
Cost: The cost of a gorilla trekking permit is a significant factor. For many Ugandans, the price of $800 for foreign residents and 300,000 UGX for East Africans can be prohibitive. This doesn’t include additional costs like transportation, accommodation, and other travel expenses, which can add up quickly. This speaks to the value they attach to gorilla trekking as an activity and gorilla conservation as a practice.
Physical Demands: Gorilla trekking is not a leisurely walk. It often involves hiking through dense forests, navigating steep and uneven terrain, and sometimes trekking for several hours. This can be daunting for those who are not physically fit or accustomed to such strenuous activity. Majority are still for lake Victoria beaches than wildlife and gorilla trekking, going by the domestic tour preference.
Health Concerns: The health of both the trekkers and the gorillas is a priority. People with contagious illnesses like colds or flu are discouraged from participating to prevent the transmission of diseases to the gorillas, who are highly susceptible to human illnesses. Majority do not like any form of inconvenience to spend their money. Other destinations are preffered because they do not require any kind of medical examination.
Weather Conditions: The forest weather conditions can be unpredictable, especially during the rainy seasons. They argue that the trails can become muddy and slippery, making the gorilla trek more challenging and less enjoyable. Some people might prefer to avoid these conditions altogether and opt for a purely savanna safari in Murchison falls national park or Queen Elizabeth national park.
Lack of Awareness: Despite the global recognition of Uganda’s gorilla trekking opportunities, some Ugandans might not be fully aware of the significance and uniqueness of this experience. The Uganda tourism board has pushed for domestic tourism, but the effort for gorilla trekking is negligible . There is a lack of promotion or adequate education about the benefits and importance of gorilla conservation within the local communities.
Cultural and Social Factors: In some cases, cultural and social factors might play a role. For instance, there is a perception that gorilla trekking is primarily an activity for tourists rather than locals. Additionally, some people have prioritized other forms of leisure or tourism that are more familiar or accessible to them, such as beaches and game parks and cities.
Safety Concerns: Although gorilla trekking is generally safe, some people have raised concerns about potential risks, such as encounters with wildlife and the remote nature of gorilla trekking locations. Is Gorilla Trekking Safe?
Permits and Regulations: The process of obtaining a permit is seen as cumbersome or restrictive. Some respondent argued that there are limited permits available each day to ensure the protection of the gorillas, which means planning and booking in advance is necessary. Unfortunately, this is not in favour of Ugandans travel segment which likes to plan and travel in just days.Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi | The Full Travel Guide
