1. Why Should I Choose Uganda For A Budget Safari?

Uganda is a less expensive safari destination. The country offers more variety than Tanzania and Kenya, which are the more apparent options for East African safaris

Uganda also has a fantastic mix of savannah grasslands and tropical rainforests jungles. Additionally, the country is relatively compact, making a drive-around safari more attractive and reducing the need for costly domestic flight transfers. At Tulambule, we can provide comfortable camping safaris in Uganda and there are plenty of mid-range hotels to choose from. Mountain gorilla trekking is a popular activity among visitors to Uganda. But gorilla treks are quite expensive wildlife safari adventures

If you can afford it, the gorilla trekking permit cost of US$700 is more than worth it. And it is less than half of the price for a gorilla trekking permit in neighboring country of Rwanda.

2. What Is Included In Budget Uganda Safaris?

The inclusions in budget Uganda safaris might vary depending on the package. Ensure that what is and is not included in your Uganda budget safari package is clear and in writing. Extras can add up quickly and may even cause unexpected tensions with your selected Uganda safari operator. Check, for example, whether airport transfers are included. Breakfast is normally included, but dinner and lunch may not be.

Do not forget to budget for drinks or refreshments. Laundry, although sometimes included in top-end luxury Uganda safaris, is usually not included on cheap budget Uganda safaris. Whatever class of Uganda safari you are on; tips are always expected (and never included).

3. A Typical Day On Budget Uganda Safaris

Most of budget Uganda safaris include a drive-around circuit of the top attractions in the country.

A typical day on a Uganda safari in one of the Savannah game parks usually starts with a wake-up call before sunrise/daybreak. After a quick cup of coffee, you’ll be on your way to look for predator action/viewing predators as they hunt in the morning. You might come back to the lodge or campsite in the mid-morning for brunch.

During the middle day heat, you will get a siesta or some time to rest. Then, you will enjoy lunch and go out again for wildlife game viewing on an afternoon drive, or maybe a wildlife safari boat cruiseOn other days, you may go with your packed lunch and spend a full day out.

This is so you can access areas further away from your base. The days in the forest jungle, where chimpanzee tracking and gorilla trekking are the main activities, will be different.

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll typically depart for the trek and return to your base for a late lunch. You may also go with a packed lunch. After a morning of navigating slippery forest slopes, the afternoon is usually spent at leisure. As time is often limited on budget Uganda safaris, the itinerary tends to be tight and demanding. There will be days spent watching wildlife in the national parks and other days driving between the parks.

The roads can be rough, and driving times can mean long hours in a 4×4 safari vehicle. Typically, there is enough of interest between the parks to keep you occupied throughout the journey.

4. Accommodation To Expect On Budget Uganda Safaris

In recent years, Uganda has matured as a tourism destination. As the number of tourists has increased, new accommodations have opened up in and around all the parks. There are now alternatives for most budgets.

Uganda lags behind other safari destinations in Africa in terms of high-end luxury amenities, but it has a nice niche in the mid-range category. Other budget and moderately priced accommodations are usually situated outside the parks, within a half-hour drive to the park gates.

In Uganda, budget accommodations used to be slightly shabby, but in recent years, several new, clean, no-frills establishments have emerged. The traditional safari camp style has become more popular and there is a trend towards cottages and permanent safari tents.

Permanent safari tents are, in effect, canvas rooms with proper beds and en suite facilities. Authentic/real camping is often the least expensive choice, and some sites provide a very comfortable set-up. Usually, campsites are placed inside the national parks, in prime wildlife viewing spots, and often in beautiful settings.

5. How Much Does A Budget Uganda Safari Cost?

You should allocate $250 per person every day as a starting point.

This pricing depends on a variety of variables. And that makes it difficult to put an accurate figure on the cost of a Uganda budget safari, as there are a lot of factors to consider.

While a safari is often not inexpensive, opting for camping or budget accommodation will require a considerably lower budget when compared to using established mid-range and luxury accommodations.

The season also makes a difference, as low- or high-season rates may apply. The Uganda National Parks do not lend themselves to mass tourism, which is part of the attractiveness. That does mean that costs tend to be high, even on cheap Uganda safari tours.

Most safaris in East Africa are customized (tailor-made) and transport is usually in strong 4×4 safari vehicles with pop-up roofs to facilitate wildlife game viewing. On a safari, there are some hidden expenses, such as tips and gratuities for rangers and guides, fees for optional/extra activities and drinks.

On majority of safaris, park fees, accommodation, transport, tour guide, and all meals are included. Confirm with your Uganda tour operator what is included and what is not. Tips for your guide can add up. If the guide does a good job, a tip of around US$10 to US$15 per person per day will be expected.

6. Best Time To Go On A Budget Safari In Uganda

In general, the best time to go on budget Uganda safari is between June to August and December to February, which is during the Dry seasons. This is when wildlife gathers around the rapidly shrinking waterholes. Once the rain comes, the animals start to scatter. Primate trekking in the forest is a big part of any safari in Uganda.

This is also best done in the dry seasons. However, if you are on a tight budget, you can consider traveling during the rainy/low season. Some lodges offer special rates for low-season. Therefore, this can bring down the costs of accommodation. If you are fortunate it may as well affect the price of your international flight ticket.

In general rainy season in Uganda does not mean rain pouring down heavily all day. It is very possible to visit the “Pearl of Africa” even though it is rainy season. Laying on the equator, Uganda has pleasant weather all year round. Read more about the best time to visit Uganda.
