7-Day East Africa Geological Road Safari 2026

Explore East Africa’s geological wonders on a 7-day road safari across Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Cross the Equator, witness the Rwenzori Mountains, Ngorongoro Crater, Murchison Falls, Rift Valley escarpments, and active volcanoes on a guided geological adventure with midrange lodges and expert insights

DAY 1: Kampala/Entebbe → Fort Portal – Crater Lakes & Rwenzori Views

Pick up from Kampala or Entebbe early in the morning and drive to Fort Portal via the main highway. On the way, stop at the Equator for a short geological demonstration. Fort Portal lies close to the western Rift Valley and offers spectacular views of the Rwenzori Mountains, the “Mountains of the Moon.” In the afternoon, explore Kyaninga Crater Lake and Ndali–Kasenda Crater Field to study volcanic formations, lava terraces, and fault lines. Overnight at Crater Safari Lodge or Tooro Botanical Gardens Guest House. Approximate drive: 5–6 hours with stops.

DAY 2: Fort Portal → Semuliki National Park – Hot Springs & Rift Geology

After breakfast, drive northwest to Semuliki National Park along accessible roads, taking about 2.5–3 hours. Visit Sempaya Hot Springs to observe geothermal activity, hydrothermal vents, and mineral deposits. Explore the Semuliki River floodplains to study sedimentation and escarpments associated with rifting. Overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge or Toro-Semliki Guest Cottages.

DAY 3: Semuliki → Murchison Falls – Nile Gorge Exploration

Drive east toward Murchison Falls National Park, following main roads with a total drive of about 5–6 hours. Visit Murchison Falls, where the Nile squeezes through a narrow gorge, exposing Precambrian rock formations and showing river incision and tectonic uplift. Take a short boat cruise to the base of the falls for closer observation of sedimentary layers. Drive back to Entebbe for overnight in preparation for the next day’s flight to Tanzania. Overnight in Entebbe.

DAY 4: Entebbe → Arusha → Lake Manyara

Take an early morning flight to Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport. From Arusha, drive 2–3 hours along good tarmac roads to Lake Manyara. Explore the alkaline soda lake, Rift Valley escarpment, fault scarps, and volcanic ash deposits. Walk along the escarpment for geological observations. Overnight at Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge or Manyara Wildlife Safari Lodge.

DAY 5: Lake Manyara → Ngorongoro Crater → Nairobi (Kenya)

Drive about 2 hours from Lake Manyara to Ngorongoro Crater. Study the caldera formed by a collapsed supervolcano, observing lava flows, tuff layers, and stratified volcanic deposits. After crater exploration, drive to the Namanga border and enter Kenya, continuing to Nairobi along good road networks. Overnight in Ibis Styles Nairobi Westlands or Eka Hotel Nairobi. Total drive: ~5–6 hours from crater to Nairobi including border crossing.

DAY 6: Nairobi → Great Rift Valley & Volcanic Sites → Nairobi

Drive 1.5–2 hours to the Great Rift Valley escarpment to observe fault lines and rift structures. Visit Hell’s Gate National Park for volcanic plugs, lava flows, gorges, and geothermal vents, or hike Mount Longonot crater rim. Return to Nairobi in the late afternoon. Overnight in Nairobi.

DAY 7: Nairobi – Departure
