The name Kyambura locally translates as \u2018it lost\u2019. It is also one of the few sites in Uganda where you can interact with them in their natural habitat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Impressive Scenery:<\/strong> Kyambura Gorge is well known stunning scenery. This sunken underground rainforest is encircled by cascading cliffs and classic savannah; you won&#8217;t find a landscape like this anywhere else.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monkeys: <\/strong>Kyambura Gorge features a vast bio-diversity and should you miss the Chimps, your guide will still point out the Black and White Colobus, Red Tailed Monkeys, Olive baboons, Vervet monkeys, and the Grey Cheeked Mangabeys.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Birds:<\/strong> Kyambura is also home to many of Queen Elizabeth National Park\u2019s 612 recorded bird species. It is a paradise for rare bird species including colourful bee-eaters and the aquatic African Finfoot.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Chimpanzee-trekking-in-Kyambura-Gorge.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Chimpanzee-trekking-in-Kyambura-Gorge.webp 750w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Chimpanzee-trekking-in-Kyambura-Gorge-300x180.webp 300w\" alt=\"Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge\" width=\"750\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Location_of_Kyambura_Gorge\"><\/span>Location of Kyambura Gorge<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Kyambura Gorge is found on north-eastern side of the famous Queen Elizabeth National Park, approximately 30 kilometers from the park office at <strong>Mweya Peninsular<\/strong>.\u00a0The gorge spans a distance of 11 km and links to the Kazinga Channel.<\/p>\n<p>It lies within the 156km<sup>2<\/sup> <strong>Kyambura Game Reserve<\/strong> and was created as a buffer zone, protecting the park from encroaching human activities.<\/p>\n<p>Kyambura and Queen Elizabeth National Park, together with <strong>Maramagambo Forest<\/strong> and <strong>Kigezi Game Reserve<\/strong>, all adjoin, and are referred to as the Queen Elizabeth Protected Area (QEPA), this borders <strong>Virunga National Park<\/strong> in the <a title=\"DR Congo Safaris: Gorilla Trekking and Volcano Hiking 2024\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/democratic-republic-of-congo-safaris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Democratic Republic of Congo<\/strong>,<\/a> and together these areas completely encircle <strong>Lake Edward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other nearby protected areas are <a title=\"Kibale Forest National Park: Home of Chimpanzees\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/kibale-forest-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Kibale Forest National Park<\/strong><\/a> to the northeast and <a title=\"Rwenzori Mountains National Park: The Mountains of the Moon\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/rwenzori-mountains-national-park\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">Rwenzori Mountains National Park<\/strong><\/a> to the northwest.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_was_the_Kyambura_Gorge_formed\"><\/span>How was the Kyambura Gorge formed?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Kyambura-Gorge-7-1.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Kyambura-Gorge-7-1.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Kyambura-Gorge-7-1-300x202.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Kyambura-Gorge-7-1-768x517.webp 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"843\" height=\"567\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kyambura Gorge was formed by the same geological forces that\u00a0created the East African Rift Valley, an active continental rift zone in <a title=\"Combined East African Safaris\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/combined-east-african-safaris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>East Africa<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The East African Rift Valley began developing approximately 22 million years ago. It was formerly considered to be part of a larger Great Rift Valley that extended north to Asia Minor. The valley was formed when compression forces caused tension on the earth\u2019s crust that lifted some parts of the earth and created a vast valley in-between.<\/p>\n<p>Later on, there was secondary faulting on the very floor of the East African Rift Valley. Chimpanzee Tracking in Kyambura Gorge<\/h3>\n<p>Over the past 2 years the Chimpanzees of Kyambura Gorge have been habituated to tolerate the presence of human visitors.<\/p>\n<p>But sightings are not guaranteed and as such permits here are offered at considerably reduced rates compared to the more well-known <a title=\"What Should You Expect on Kibale Forest Chimp Trek?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/what-should-you-expect-on-kibale-forest-chimp-trek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kibale Forest National Park<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is however a chance to track the Chimpanzees in a remote and lesser known location of Africa. <a title=\"Chimpanzee Trekking In Uganda 2024\/2025\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/chimpanzee-trekking-in-uganda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chimpanzee treks<\/strong><\/a> in Kyambura are offer in the morning and afternoon with approximately 4-6 people in a group each led by a Ugandan Wildlife Authority specialist guide.\u00a0From the grassy savanna plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park you drop 100 meters down into a lush subterranean Eden, a sanctuary for all kinds of wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The hike takes 2 to 3 hours depending on how far the chimps are in the gorge and it requires the occasional bush whacking as not many people visit this hidden gem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Please note that<\/strong> chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge is available to guests aged 12 years and older. It\u00a0also works with local communities to promote <strong style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">sustainable <\/strong><strong style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\">ecotourism<\/strong> and conservation in one of Africa\u2019s most important areas for primate and avian biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Accommodation here suits most types of traveller, and the lodge\u2019s family banda may also be used by honeymooners hoping for a little extra privacy.<\/p>\n<h3>2.
