Many tourists are concerned about sustainability and the ethics of animal encounters.<\/p>\n<p>While programs, where animals are kept and bred in captivity, are the main ones under scrutiny, it is also worth questioning whether tourism activities with free-roaming animals are ethically sound. This brings me to the case in point \u2013 <strong>going\u00a0gorilla trekking.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trekking Mountain gorillas in\u00a0<strong>Uganda<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Rwanda<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0one of Africa\u2019s most thrilling wildlife experiences. After jumping in a vehicle and driving through quite rural villages, you head into the jungle on foot and you&#8217;re soon assaulted by the ripe, potent scent of vegetation.<\/p>\n<p>With every step, anticipation propels you forward, towards that moment when your one hour encounter with a gentle giant male silverback gorilla and his family begins. But\u00a0getting close to the wild gorillas of Africa is a contentious issue.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-300x188.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-768x480.webp 768w\" alt=\"is gorilla trekking ethical\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There is increasing scientific evidence that when tourists approach gorillas, it interrupts their well-being and endangers their health.\u00a0Some believe it is no coincidence that in 2020, when tourists were nearly entirely absent there was a\u00a0<strong>gorilla baby boom in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest<\/strong><b>\u00a0<\/b>as 12 of the 70 or so adult female gorillas in\u00a0<strong>Uganda\u2019s tourism-habituated gorilla families<\/strong>\u00a0gave birth, rather than the normal 3 to 5 per year.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_gorilla_trekking_ethical\"><\/span>Is gorilla trekking ethical?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Questioning the impact of gorilla trekking tourism on the conservation of this species is especially crucial because gorillas are highly endangered primates.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1960s, Dian Fossey \u2013 an American primatologist \u2013\u00a0 was in East Africa studying mountain gorillas and pioneering conservation efforts on their behalf. During that time, there were only about 240 mountain gorillas left in the wild.\u00a0\u00a0Her work was undeniably essential in bringing the plight of mountain gorillas to the attention of the international community.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gorilla-Trekking-Permit-Rwanda-1-scaled.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 898px) 100vw, 898px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gorilla-Trekking-Permit-Rwanda-1-scaled.webp 898w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gorilla-Trekking-Permit-Rwanda-1-224x300.webp 224w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gorilla-Trekking-Permit-Rwanda-1-766x1024.webp 766w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Gorilla-Trekking-Permit-Rwanda-1-768x1027.webp 768w\" alt=\"Gorilla Trekking Permit Rwanda\" width=\"898\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the 1991, the Uganda Government\u00a0 responded to the mountain gorilla crisis by creating <strong>Mgahinga Gorilla National Park <\/strong>and <strong>Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park<\/strong>\u00a0 in the southeast of the country as protected habitats.<\/p>\n<p>The Governments of Rwanda and\u00a0 DR Congo also hard established\u00a0<strong>Volcanoes National Park <\/strong>and<strong style=\"text-align: var(--text-align);\"> Virunga National Park<\/strong> respectively, which shares an ecosystem with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.\u00a0These four\u00a0 parks provide a safe haven for mountain gorillas, protecting them from;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Habitat loss (deforestation)<\/li>\n<li>Poaching<\/li>\n<li>Transmission of human diseases<\/li>\n<li>Human conflict (civil war and political unrest)<\/li>\n<li>Hunting (bushmeat and trophies)<\/li>\n<li>Human-wildlife conflict<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After these gorilla national parks were established in Uganda and Rwanda, a few of their\u00a0<b>gorilla families<\/b>\u00a0were put through the process of habituation, which is where the gorilla families are slowly introduced and made used to human presence.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>gorilla habituation<\/strong>\u00a0was undertaken with tourism in mind, because when the gorilla families were fully habituated, it became possible for human visitors to trek and see gorillas in the wild.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Gorilla_Trekking_Tourism_Helping_With_Gorilla_Conservation\"><\/span>Is Gorilla Trekking Tourism Helping With Gorilla Conservation?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1024x685.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1024x685.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-300x201.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-768x513.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1.webp 1080w\" alt=\"is gorilla trekking ethical\" width=\"843\" height=\"564\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Generally, gorilla trekking tourism is seen as being successful in terms of reducing the amount of poaching and increasing the population of mountain gorillas.\u00a0According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), as of early 2019, mountain gorillas number over 1,000, up from 780 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2018 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) downgraded them from being a Critically Endangered species to Endangered species.<\/p>\n<p>This has been possible in part because the wildlife authorities in Uganda and Rwanda have not cashed in on the high demand for\u00a0<b>gorilla trekking safaris<\/b>\u00a0from tourists. But still keep the number of gorilla trekking permits limited.\u00a0This is so that the gorillas are exposed to minimal human activity; an hour a day, with no more than 8 people in a trekking group.<\/p>\n<p>This is impressive when compared with other wildlife encounters of\u00a0 jeeps en masse that we witness in other parts of the world, and where wildlife guiding is still all about keeping the client happy. And, indeed, gorilla trekking tourism is often cited as being an exemplary form of wildlife tourism that is a win-win when it comes to conservation and species preservation.<\/p>\n<p>However, with this strict conservation management system comes stringent rules \u2013\u00a0<strong>the gorilla trekking rules<\/strong>. And it is critical that these are adhered to at all times to ensure that we do not harm the gorillas or their habitats by spreading disease and bacteria.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Gorilla_Trekking_Rules\"><\/span>Gorilla Trekking Rules<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1.webp 900w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-1-1-768x512.webp 768w\" alt=\"is gorilla trekking ethical?\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will be briefed on these gorilla trekking by your tour operator and the guides at the gorilla parks, but the main gorilla trekking rules are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do Not Go Gorilla Trekking If You Are Ill: <\/strong>Gorillas and humans share 98 % of the DNA, which makes these apes highly susceptible to human-borne infectious diseases. And gorillas do not have the same immune systems as humans to fight off our diseases, leaving them vulnerable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>You Need A Permit To Trek Gorillas: <\/strong>Expensive\u00a0<strong>permits <\/strong>are needed for\u00a0<strong>gorilla trekking in Uganda<\/strong>, Rwanda and this need to be purchased in advance. A limited number of trekking permits are issued, in order to restrict the number of tourist groups, as well as the size of the groups, that visit the gorillas each day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do Not Touch the Gorillas \u2013 Keep a 7 Meter Distance: <\/strong>This help to minimize contact and thus the spread of viruses. However, sometimes gorillas approach people, coming closer than is recommended.\u00a0 If a gorilla approaches you, you need to stay put, not make any sudden movements and avert your gaze to avoid appearing confrontational.\u00a0This means people and gorillas\u00a0get closer to each other than the safe distance required. It is one of the reasons why trekking\u00a0gorillas with surgical masks on, is highly recommended, even in areas where masks are not required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Rights_Of_The_Batwa\"><\/span>The Rights Of The Batwa<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-1.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 796px) 100vw, 796px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-1.webp 796w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-1-300x216.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-2-1-768x554.webp 768w\" alt=\"\" width=\"796\" height=\"574\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sadly, the creation of gorilla parks also involved serious maltreatment of the\u00a0<b>Batwa \u2013 a pygmy tribe\u00a0<\/b>\u2013 whose ancestral tribal lands included much of Uganda\u2019s Mgahinga Gorilla and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park.<\/p>\n<p>They were evicted and most of them are still living, many squatting, on the fringes of the parks, struggling to adjust to new lifestyles outside the forest or indeed survive.\u00a0Their displacement was done out without any consultation or consent of the people, nor with any public hearing.<\/p>\n<p>While a handful of Batwa families have been given short land leases, their futures are still hanging in the balance after that. Most of the families have been left without land and, therefore, ways to make a living. A living that was totally sustainable before their evictions, as they had survived for centuries hunting and gathering in the forests.<\/p>\n<p>It was believed that the Batwa killed mountain gorillas for meat and they were blamed for any poaching that would occur.\u00a0But, the Batwa don\u2019t eat gorilla meat, and have co-existed with them for centuries. Sadly, racial discrimination against the Batwa Pygmies is common and now a huge issue.\u00a0The irony is that as we tourists visit the gorillas, and help fund their survival, the few thousand members of Batwa tribe in Uganda are in danger of extinction.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_You_Can_Do\"><\/span>What You Can Do<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-4-1024x576.webp\" sizes=\"(max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-4-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-4-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-4-768x432.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.tulambule.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/is-gorilla-trekking-ethical-4.webp 1200w\" alt=\"is gorilla trekking ethical\" width=\"843\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Support community tourism initiatives that support the Batwa People, such as the\u00a0<strong>Batwa Trail in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Here, members of the Batwa tribe take you on a guided walk through their lands. There are always more porters than there is work. And many of these men and women will have walked miles to get there just to get a day\u2019s work. So, it is really worth hiring them, even if you don\u2019t really need one.
