Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Your driver-guide picks you up from your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport in the morning. Before heading for the border, take a short city tour of Kigali, with stops at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Inema Arts Center, and the busy Kimironko Market.

By mid-morning, depart Kigali and drive west toward the Cyanika border post, around 3 hours covering 119 kilometers, passing Musanze town with views of the Virunga volcanoes.

After clearing immigration at Cyanika, the route continues into Uganda through Kisoro town toward the Rushaga or Nkuringo sector of Bwindi, roughly another 1.5 to 2 hours on mountain roads. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, check in, and enjoy dinner while your guide briefs you on the next day's trek.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Transfer Back to Kigali

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for the mandatory ranger briefing between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, where trekking groups are assigned their gorilla family. For a clear sense of how the trek and the encounter itself unfold, read what to expect during your hour with the gorillas.

The trek can run from 30 minutes to several hours depending on where the gorillas have moved overnight, followed by a strictly timed hour in their company. Return to the lodge for a late lunch, then begin the drive back through Cyanika to Kigali, arriving in the early evening.
