Private mountain gorilla permits in Uganda let your group trek with a gorilla family with no strangers on the trail. Instead of sharing the experience with up to seven other visitors, you book every place in the trekking group for your own family, friends or colleagues.
The pace, the breaks, the conversation and that unforgettable hour with the gorillas belong to your group alone. This guide explains how private mountain gorilla permits work, what they cost, which sectors work best, and how to book them with a licensed Ugandan operator.
Quick answer: The Uganda Wildlife Authority allows a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day. To get private mountain gorilla permits, you book all 8 permits for one family on one date. At US$800 per permit, a private group costs US$6,400, or US$4,800 in the low season months of April, May and November.
What Are Private Mountain Gorilla Permits in Uganda?
Uganda does not sell a special "private" permit. Private mountain gorilla permits simply mean your party holds every permit for one habituated gorilla family on a chosen day. No other visitors can join, because there are no permits left to sell.
You still trek with UWA ranger guides, trackers and an armed escort, who accompany every gorilla trek in the country. Everything else becomes yours: the walking pace, how often you stop, and where you sit when the gorillas appear.
For the basics that apply to every trek, such as the minimum age, what a standard permit includes and the full price list, read our complete guide to gorilla trekking permits in Uganda.
Who Should Book Private Mountain Gorilla Permits?

For travellers who cannot walk the trail, community porters can carry them in a sedan chair, which we can arrange in advance at an extra cost.
Private mountain gorilla permits are not for everyone, but for some travellers they transform the whole experience.
Families and friends travelling together. If your group is already six to eight people, booking the whole group costs little or nothing extra. You simply hold every permit on that day.
Celebrations and proposals. Anniversaries, milestone birthdays and honeymoons feel far more personal when the only witnesses are your loved ones and the forest. Some of our guests have proposed during their gorilla hour.
Travellers with mixed fitness levels. With older parents or less experienced hikers, a private group can rest as often as it needs. Nobody feels they are holding others back, and nobody feels rushed.
Wildlife photographers. Without other visitors moving around you, it is far easier to find clean angles, wait for good light and capture the moment a silverback looks straight at your lens.
Corporate and incentive groups. A private gorilla trek works well as a reward trip or leadership retreat. The shared climb, followed by the gorilla encounter, creates a team memory that lasts for years.

How Much Do Private Mountain Gorilla Permits Cost?
Private mountain gorilla permits carry no premium. You pay UWA's standard rate for each of the 8 permits in the group. The table below shows the total for a full private group of foreign non-residents:
| Season | Price per Permit | Private Group of 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Standard season | US$800 | US$6,400 |
| Low season (April, May, November) | US$600 | US$4,800 |
Foreign residents in Uganda pay US$700 per permit at standard rates and US$500 in the low season. Low season permits cannot be rescheduled once booked, so confirm your dates and flights before paying.
What If Your Group Has Fewer Than 8 People?
To hold private mountain gorilla permits, you still need to buy all 8 permits for that family. A group of 6 pays for 8, and a couple also pays for 8. Empty places simply stay empty, because permits are issued to named travellers and cannot be handed to strangers on the day.
For a couple, a private trek is a genuine splurge at US$6,400. Many smaller groups choose a middle path instead: a standard trek in a quieter sector during the low season, when groups are often well below the maximum of 8.
Private Gorilla Trekking in Uganda vs Rwanda
A single Rwanda gorilla permit costs US$1,500. A family of four trekking in Rwanda pays US$6,000 for shared permits. For about the same amount, the same four people can buy private mountain gorilla permits for an entirely private trek in Uganda.
That comparison makes private gorilla trekking in Uganda one of the best value exclusive wildlife experiences in Africa. For a full side-by-side comparison, see our guide to gorilla safaris in Uganda vs Rwanda.
Private Gorilla Habituation Experience
If one hour with the gorillas feels too short, the Gorilla Habituation Experience offers up to four hours with a gorilla family that researchers are still preparing for tourism. It takes place in Bwindi's southern sector, mainly Rushaga.
Each habituation group allows a maximum of 4 visitors per day, so a private habituation means booking all 4 permits:
| Period | Price per Permit (Foreign Non-Resident) | Private Group of 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Until 31 December 2026 | US$1,500 | US$6,000 |
| From 1 January 2027 | US$1,800 | US$7,200 |
You spend the day alongside UWA researchers and trackers, watching behaviour that fully habituated families rarely show in front of visitors. Unsure which experience suits you? Compare them in our guide to gorilla habituation vs gorilla trekking.
Where to Book a Private Gorilla Trek
Uganda's mountain gorillas live in two national parks in the southwest. Your choice of park and sector affects how easy it is to secure private mountain gorilla permits.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi has more than 20 habituated gorilla families across four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. More families means more chances of finding a date where all 8 places for one family are still free.
Rushaga in the south has the most families and is usually the easiest sector for private bookings. Buhoma in the north has the gentlest terrain, which suits families with older travellers. Ruhija is quieter and higher, with excellent birding.
Compare all four in our guide to the best Bwindi gorilla trekking sectors. You can also meet each family in our full list of gorilla families in Bwindi and Mgahinga.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one habituated family, the Nyakagezi group, at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. With only one family, a private booking here depends entirely on availability for that single group.
When it works, it is unforgettable: volcanic scenery, very few visitors, and the chance to add golden monkey tracking the next day.
How to Book Private Mountain Gorilla Permits
Securing private mountain gorilla permits takes more planning than a standard booking, because you need all 8 places on one family to be free on the same day.
Step 1: Choose Your Dates Early
For the peak months of June to September and December to February, start planning 6 to 12 months ahead. Private groups compete with everyone else for the same permits. A single booking by another traveller removes the private option for that family on that day.
For the low season, 3 to 6 months is usually enough. Remember that low season permits cannot be rescheduled.
Step 2: Book Through a Licensed Tour Operator
Foreign visitors must book gorilla permits through a licensed Ugandan tour operator, under the rules of the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Tulambule Uganda Safaris is licensed by the Uganda Tourism Board and accredited with UWA.
We check live availability across every sector, find the families with all 8 places free on your dates, and secure them for your group. If your first-choice sector is full, we suggest the best alternatives rather than letting you lose the date.
Step 3: Share Traveller Details
UWA issues each permit in a named traveller's name. We need each person's full name exactly as shown in their passport, plus their nationality and passport number.
Step 4: Pay in Full to Confirm
Permits are only confirmed once they are paid in full. We register the permits with UWA straight away and send your group an official confirmation with the permit references. Bring it, printed or on your phone, together with your passports on trekking day.
Last-Minute Private Permits
Last-minute private mountain gorilla permits are sometimes possible, especially in Rushaga and especially in April, May and November. If you are already in Uganda or travelling soon, contact us and we will check every sector for you the same day.
What Your Private Trek Includes
Each of your private mountain gorilla permits includes:
- Park entry for the day of your trek
- A pre-trek briefing at the park headquarters
- Experienced UWA ranger guides, trackers and an armed escort
- One hour with your gorilla family (up to four hours on a habituation experience)
- A contribution to gorilla conservation and to communities around the park
Transport, accommodation, meals, porters and tips are not included in the permit. When we plan your full private safari, we arrange all of these, so your group travels in a private 4x4 vehicle and stays at lodges close to your trekking sector.
Sample 4-Day Private Gorilla Safari
This is how a typical private gorilla safari with Tulambule comes together. Every element can be adjusted to your group, budget and travel dates.
Day 1: Entebbe to Bwindi. Your private driver guide collects your group in Entebbe or Kampala. You drive southwest through the countryside, or take a short domestic flight to save most of a day on the road. Overnight at a lodge close to your trekking sector.
Day 2: Your private gorilla trek. After an early breakfast, your group attends the briefing at the park headquarters. Then you head into the forest with your rangers and porters, at your own pace, to spend one hour with your gorilla family. The afternoon is free to rest or celebrate.
Day 3: Community and forest day. Join a Batwa cultural experience, take a guided village walk, or enjoy a forest nature walk. Groups with the budget and energy can add a second gorilla trek or the habituation experience in Rushaga.
Day 4: Return to Entebbe. Drive or fly back to Entebbe for your onward flight, or continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kibale Forest to extend your safari.
Short on time? Our 3-day fly-in gorilla safari gets your group to Bwindi in under two hours. Want chimpanzees too? See our 4-day fly-in safari for gorillas and chimpanzees or our 5-day safari with gorillas, chimps, wildlife and culture.
Tips for a Great Private Gorilla Trek
A private permit gives your group control over the pace, but the forest still sets the rules. These tips will help you make the most of the day:
- Hire porters: community porters charge around US$20, carry your bags on steep sections and earn a vital income that supports conservation.
- Agree your pace early: tell your ranger guide at the briefing if anyone needs extra rest stops.
- Plan your celebration: if you are proposing or celebrating, let us know in advance so your guide can help make the moment special while keeping the gorillas undisturbed.
- Keep your distance: stay at least 7 metres from the gorillas, even when they come closer.
- Stay healthy: anyone with a cough, cold or flu will not be allowed to trek, because gorillas catch human illnesses easily.
- Pack properly: long sleeves, long trousers, waterproof boots and garden gloves are essential. Use our ultimate gorilla trekking packing list to prepare.
Responsible tourism has helped the world's mountain gorilla population grow to more than 1,000 individuals. Your permit fees directly support the rangers and communities who protect them.
