Wishlist for Uganda Gorilla Safari Tours: Everything You Need to Plan the Perfect Gorilla Adventure

Focus Keyword: Wishlist for Uganda Gorilla Safari Tours Meta Title: Wishlist for Uganda Gorilla Safari Tours | Tulambule Uganda Safaris Meta Description: Planning Uganda gorilla safari tours? Here is your ultimate wishlist — from gorilla permits and packing tips to the best parks, lodges and add-on experiences. Plan with Tulambule Uganda Safaris.

There is a moment that every traveller who has been to Uganda talks about. You are deep in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, breathing in the damp, earthy air of a 25,000-year-old rainforest, when the ranger holds up his hand and everything stops. Through a tangle of ancient vines and fern fronds, a pair of deep brown eyes meets yours. A mountain gorilla — unhurried, utterly calm — sits just a few metres away, watching you with the same quiet curiosity you feel towards him.

It is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on the planet. And for millions of travellers around the world, seeing mountain gorillas in Uganda is not just a travel goal — it is top of the wishlist.

If Uganda gorilla safari tours are on your wishlist, this guide is for you. We have put together the ultimate wishlist of everything you need to plan, prepare and experience the perfect gorilla safari in Uganda — from securing your permit to choosing the right lodge, picking the ideal add-on experiences and packing the right gear.

At Tulambule Uganda Safaris, we have been crafting unforgettable gorilla safaris since 2014. Let us help you turn your wishlist into reality.

1. Secure Your Uganda Gorilla Permit — The Most Critical Item on Your Wishlist

If there is one non-negotiable on your Uganda gorilla safari wishlist, it is the gorilla trekking permit. Without it, there is no trek.

Uganda gorilla permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and cost $800 per person. Each permit allows you one hour with a habituated gorilla family, accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers. Only eight visitors are allowed to visit each gorilla family per day — making this one of the most controlled and intimate wildlife experiences in Africa.

Why you need to book early: Permits are in high demand, particularly during the dry season months of June to September and December to February. For peak season travel, permits can sell out six to twelve months in advance. Even during quieter periods, booking at least three to six months ahead is strongly recommended.

At Tulambule Uganda Safaris, we secure your gorilla permit as part of your overall safari package, so you never have to worry about missing out.

Wishlist tip: If you want a more exclusive and extended gorilla experience, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi's Rushaga sector. This allows you to spend up to four hours with a gorilla family that is still being habituated to human presence — a far more immersive encounter limited to just four visitors per day. The habituation permit costs $1,500 per person and is well worth the additional investment for serious wildlife lovers.

2. Choose Your Gorilla Trekking Destination

Uganda has two national parks where mountain gorillas can be trekked. Both deserve a place on your wishlist.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is the undisputed home of gorilla trekking in Africa. This ancient rainforest in southwestern Uganda is home to over 500 mountain gorillas across more than 20 habituated families — more than half of the world's entire mountain gorilla population.

Bwindi has four trekking sectors, each offering a different experience:

  • Buhoma — the original and most accessible sector, ideal for first-time trekkers
  • Ruhija — higher altitude, fewer tourists, known for its exceptional birdlife
  • Nkuringo — dramatic scenery, community tourism and stunning views over the Congo border
  • Rushaga — the largest sector with the most gorilla families, including the Gorilla Habituation Experience

Each sector has its own character and its own selection of gorilla families. Our team at Tulambule Uganda Safaris will advise on the best sector for your fitness level, interests and available dates.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga is Uganda's lesser-known but equally magical gorilla park, tucked into the volcanic Virunga mountains on the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is home to one habituated gorilla family — the famous Nyakagezi family — and offers a quieter, more off-the-beaten-path trekking experience.

Mgahinga is also the only place in Uganda where you can track golden monkeys, making it a wonderful addition to any Uganda primate safari wishlist.

3. Add Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

No Uganda gorilla safari wishlist is complete without chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park. Located near the town of Fort Portal in western Uganda, Kibale is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees — the highest density of chimps anywhere in Africa — alongside 12 other primate species.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is thrillingly different from gorilla trekking. Chimps are loud, fast and social — racing through the canopy, calling to one another across the forest and occasionally descending to the ground right in front of you. The energy of a chimp community in full voice is electric.

For the ultimate chimp experience, consider the Chimpanzee Habituation Experience in Kibale — a full day from dawn to dusk spent following a chimp community with researchers and trackers. It is as close to a David Attenborough moment as most of us will ever get.

Beyond Kibale, chimpanzees can also be tracked in:

  • Kyambura Gorge, Queen Elizabeth National Park — chimps in a dramatic sunken forest gorge
  • Budongo Forest, Murchison Falls National Park — excellent chimp encounters combined with a Nile cruise

4. Experience a Game Drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Your Uganda gorilla safari wishlist should include at least one classic African game drive — and Queen Elizabeth National Park delivers one of the best in East Africa.

Located between Kibale Forest to the north and Bwindi to the south, Queen Elizabeth is Uganda's most visited national park. It is home to 95 mammal species and over 600 bird species, and offers a completely different landscape from the primate forests — open savannah, crater lakes and the famous Kazinga Channel.

Highlights to add to your wishlist:

  • Ishasha Sector — one of the world's only places where lions climb trees. Watching a pride of lions draped across the branches of a fig tree is an image you will never forget
  • Kazinga Channel boat cruise — a two-hour cruise on this natural channel connecting Lake George and Lake Edward, offering up-close encounters with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and hundreds of bird species
  • Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee trek — combining game drives with primate trekking in one park

5. A Nile River Cruise at Murchison Falls

If your Uganda gorilla safari wishlist has room for one more spectacular experience, add a Nile River cruise at Murchison Falls National Park. Uganda's largest national park is home to the world's most powerful waterfall — where the entire force of the River Nile is compressed through a seven-metre gap in the rock with a thunderous roar.

A boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls is one of Uganda's most dramatic safari experiences. Along the way you will see elephants drinking at the river's edge, hippos wallowing in the shallows, Nile crocodiles sunbathing on the banks and an extraordinary variety of birdlife including the prehistoric-looking shoebill stork.

Murchison Falls can be combined with gorilla trekking and Kibale chimp trekking on a longer Uganda safari itinerary of ten days or more.

6. Stay in a Forest Lodge — The Wishlist Accommodation Experience

Where you stay on a Uganda gorilla safari is part of the magic. There is something deeply special about falling asleep in a forest lodge, listening to the sounds of the Bwindi rainforest at night, knowing that gorillas are moving through the trees just beyond your window.

Uganda offers gorilla lodge options across all budgets:

Luxury: Forest lodges near Bwindi offer an exceptional combination of comfort and wilderness immersion. Expect stunning views over the forest, gourmet dining, spa facilities and guiding by resident naturalists. These lodges are typically perched on ridges overlooking the Bwindi canopy and offer some of the most dramatic vistas in Africa.

Mid-range: There are excellent mid-range lodges and bandas near all four Bwindi trekking sectors, offering comfortable accommodation, good food and easy access to the park briefing points.

Budget: Budget guesthouses and community-run lodges around Bwindi offer affordable accommodation without sacrificing the atmosphere of being deep in gorilla country.

Our team at Tulambule Uganda Safaris will recommend and book the best accommodation for your budget and preferred sector.

7. Visit Lake Bunyonyi — The Wishlist Rest Stop

After the exhilaration of gorilla trekking, many travellers on Uganda gorilla safari tours add a day or two at Lake Bunyonyi — and it is easy to see why this is firmly on so many wishlists.

Lake Bunyonyi is one of Africa's most beautiful lakes — a mirror-still crater lake studded with 29 islands, surrounded by terraced hillsides and dotted with dugout canoes. The air is cool and clean at this altitude, and the atmosphere is deeply peaceful.

Activities at Lake Bunyonyi include canoe trips, island hopping, swimming, birdwatching and visits to local communities. It is the perfect place to decompress after a week in the forest before flying home.

8. Experience a Batwa Cultural Encounter

The Batwa people are the original forest dwellers of Bwindi — hunter-gatherers who lived inside the forest for thousands of years before it became a protected national park. A Batwa cultural experience is one of the most moving and memorable additions to any Uganda gorilla safari wishlist.

During a Batwa trail, community elders take you into the forest and share their traditional knowledge — how they tracked animals, collected honey, identified medicinal plants and built shelters from forest materials. It is a humbling encounter with a way of life that has almost completely disappeared, and the proceeds go directly to Batwa community development projects.

9. The Complete Wishlist Packing Guide for Uganda Gorilla Safari Tours

Getting your packing right is essential for gorilla trekking. The forest is steep, dense and often wet. Here is the complete wishlist of what to bring:

Clothing:

  • Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers — essential protection against stinging nettles, insects and scratches
  • Neutral colours only — green, brown, khaki or grey. Avoid bright colours and white
  • Warm fleece or jacket — mornings at Bwindi are cool at altitude
  • Rain jacket and waterproof bag cover — always be prepared for rain in the rainforest

Footwear:

  • Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support — the forest trails are steep and slippery
  • Gaiters to keep mud and insects out of your boots

Equipment:

  • Gardening gloves — for gripping vegetation on steep sections
  • Walking stick — available at the park trailhead, essential on steep descents
  • Daypack with rain cover
  • Camera with extra batteries and memory cards — forest light is low, so a good camera matters
  • Binoculars — useful both on the gorilla trek and for birdwatching

Health and comfort:

  • Insect repellent — apply before entering the forest
  • Sunscreen — for open sections and game drives
  • Water and high-energy snacks for the trek
  • Personal medications and a basic first aid kit

Wishlist tip: Hire a porter at the trailhead for $15–20. They will carry your daypack, help you up steep sections and provide welcome support on the descent. Hiring a porter also directly benefits the local community around the park.

10. Combine Your Gorilla Safari with Rwanda — The Cross-Border Wishlist Experience

For travellers who want to go beyond Uganda, a cross-border gorilla safari combining Uganda and Rwanda is the ultimate primate wishlist experience.

Uganda offers gorilla trekking at $800 per person, while Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park offers a shorter drive from Kigali and a different forest setting, with permits at $1,500 per person. Many travellers fly into Entebbe, trek gorillas in Bwindi and chimps in Kibale, then cross into Rwanda for a second gorilla trek and a visit to Rwanda's Genocide Memorial in Kigali — a sobering and important cultural experience.

Tulambule Uganda Safaris offers cross-border safari packages covering Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania, all handled by our experienced team from a single point of contact.
