Day 1: Entebbe/Kampala → Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary → Murchison Falls National Park

Driving time: approximately 5–6 hours | Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your adventure begins with an early departure — pick-up at 06:30 AM from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. Your Tulambule driver-guide loads the vehicle and heads north through the Luwero Triangle, Uganda's fertile heartland, as the sun climbs over rolling hills and roadside markets come to life.

Mid-Morning: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — Track Wild Rhinos on Foot

After roughly 2.5 hours on the road you arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos today, and one of the few places anywhere in Africa that allows visitors to track them on foot.

Ziwa's story is one of Africa's most inspiring conservation comebacks. Southern white rhinos were hunted to local extinction in Uganda during the 1970s and 80s. In the early 2000s, six individuals were translocated from Kenya and the US to begin a breeding programme. Today the sanctuary is home to over 34 rhinos and counting — with plans already in place to relocate populations back into Uganda's national parks.

Your guided rhino tracking session lasts approximately two hours. Accompanied by an armed ranger and a specialist guide, you move through open grassland following recent tracks and radio collar signals. When you find them — and you almost always will — you stand just metres away from animals that can weigh over 2,000 kilograms. Nothing prepares you for the first time a rhino raises its head and looks directly at you.

This is also excellent birding territory, with the sanctuary recording over 300 species. Keep your binoculars ready.

After tracking, enjoy lunch at the sanctuary restaurant before continuing northwest toward the park.

Afternoon: Arrive Murchison Falls — Top of the Falls

You enter Murchison Falls National Park through the Kichumbanyobo gate and drive directly to the top of the falls — one of the most dramatic natural viewpoints in East Africa.

Here, the entire force of the River Nile — the longest river on earth — is forced through a gap just 7 metres wide before plunging 43 metres into the gorge below. The roar is extraordinary. The spray catches the afternoon light. The sheer geological violence of it is unlike anything else you will see on a Uganda safari.

Stand at the railing, feel the mist on your face, and take it all in. This is Murchison Falls — the world's most powerful waterfall.

Sunset: Nile River Boat Cruise to the Base of the Falls

Nile River Boat Cruise to the Base of the FallsLate afternoon is boat cruise time — and this is one of the finest two hours in Ugandan wildlife watching. Your launch departs from Paraa and heads upstream along the Nile toward the base of the falls.

Both banks are thick with wildlife. Enormous pods of hippos grunt and submerge. Nile crocodiles bask on every mudflat. Elephants and buffalo come down to drink in the golden light. African fish eagles call from the treetops. Pied kingfishers hover above the water. If the timing is right, you may even spot the prehistoric shoebill stork — one of Uganda's most sought-after bird sightings — along the river's reed edges.

As you approach the base of Murchison Falls, the roar grows louder and the rainbow over the gorge comes into view. The boat holds position in the spray as you look straight up at the falls thundering down from above. It is a genuinely unforgettable moment.

Return downstream as the sun sets over the Nile. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge.

Day 2: Morning Big 5 Game Drive → Top of the Falls Walk → Return to Kampala/Entebbe

Meals: Breakfast & Packed Lunch

Dawn: Big 5 Game Drive — North Bank Circuit

Rise at 06:00 for an early breakfast before the morning mist has lifted off the Nile. The north bank of Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's premier Big 5 game drive territory — a vast rolling savannah where the Nile cuts through grassland, acacia woodland, and riverine forest.

Your driver-guide navigates the park's network of game tracks, scanning for wildlife that is most active in the cool of the morning. Murchison is home to Uganda's largest elephant population, and herds of 30 to 50 individuals are a common sight. Rothschild's giraffes — one of the world's rarest giraffe subspecies — move in loose groups across the open plains. Enormous herds of buffalo graze the valley floors. Uganda kob, Jackson's hartebeest, oribi, and waterbuck are seen in abundance throughout.

Lions are present and regularly spotted on the game drive circuit, particularly around the Delta area and Buligi. Leopard sightings are rarer but do occur — especially in the early morning along woodland edges.

With rhinos already ticked off at Ziwa the previous day, this game drive completes your opportunity to see all four of the Big 5 present in Murchison Falls National Park. It is an extraordinary wildlife density for a park that most visitors outside Uganda have never even heard of.

The park also holds over 450 recorded bird species — more than the entire continental US — making it one of Africa's great birding destinations. Keep an eye out for the grey crowned crane (Uganda's national bird), the Abyssinian ground hornbill, the black-and-white casqued hornbill, and dozens of stunning bee-eaters and kingfishers along the river.

Mid-Morning: Walk to the Top of the Falls

Return briefly to the falls viewpoint for the short nature walk along the clifftop — a different perspective from yesterday's visit, with morning light illuminating the gorge below. Your guide will point out the botanical diversity along the trail and explain the geology of the Nile's dramatic passage through the Rift Valley escarpment.

Late Morning: Depart for Kampala/Entebbe

After a packed lunch on the road, your vehicle heads south for the return journey. You pass back through the park gates and rejoin the Kampala highway, with the experience of an entire Ugandan safari condensed into two incredible days.

Estimated arrival back in Kampala/Entebbe: 5:00–6:00 PM.

Best Time to Go

This 2 Days Murchison Falls Safari runs year-round, but conditions vary by season. For the full breakdown, read our guide on the best time to visit Murchison Falls National Park.

June to September (Peak — Highly Recommended) Dry season brings shorter grass, excellent visibility, and concentrated wildlife around water sources. Roads are firm and game drive tracks are fully accessible. This is the best overall window for Big 5 sightings.

December to February (Excellent) The short dry season delivers similarly outstanding conditions with slightly fewer visitors than the June–September peak. Lion and leopard sightings tend to be strong during this window.

March to May and October to November (Green Season) The park stays open and wildlife viewing remains good — rhinos at Ziwa are year-round. Expect lush landscapes, dramatic skies, and lower prices. Some tracks may be muddy but the 4×4 vehicle handles it comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far is Murchison Falls from Kampala? Murchison Falls National Park is approximately 305 km from Kampala, a drive of around 5–6 hours depending on stops. We depart early to maximise your time in the park. There is also a daily scheduled flight from Entebbe to Pakuba airstrip inside the park (approximately 90 minutes) if you prefer to fly.

Is rhino tracking at Ziwa guaranteed? Rhino sightings at Ziwa are very nearly guaranteed. The sanctuary's 34+ white rhinos are tracked daily by rangers using GPS data and foot patrols. On the rare occasion that tracking takes longer, guides will stay with you until rhinos are found. Sighting success rates are consistently above 98%.

Is this safari suitable for children? Yes. The rhino tracking walk is moderate and suitable for children aged 6 and above (accompanied by adults). The boat cruise and game drives are suitable for all ages. There is no minimum age requirement for the boat cruise or game drives.

What wildlife can I realistically expect to see? Rhinos at Ziwa (near-guaranteed). Hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, and buffalo on the boat cruise (consistently excellent). Rothschild's giraffes, Uganda kob, and warthog on game drives (reliably seen). Lions (regularly spotted — not guaranteed on every drive). Leopard (present but requires luck). Over 450 bird species are recorded in the park.

Can I combine this safari with gorilla trekking? Yes — though not on the same trip due to geography. Murchison is in the northwest; gorilla trekking is in the southwest. The most popular combination is a 7-day Uganda safari covering both. Contact us and we will design the right itinerary for your available time.

What should I pack for this safari? Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, brown — avoid bright colours and white), sturdy closed shoes for rhino tracking, a light fleece or jacket for early mornings on the boat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, and a camera with a good zoom lens. A full packing list is available from our team on request.
