Lake Mburo is the closest savannah park to Kampala and Entebbe, making it a natural first stop rather than a detour. From there, the route continues southwest to Bwindi for the gorilla trek and a Batwa Pygmies cultural experience, before the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe. Because the road from Lake Mburo to Bwindi runs 5 to 7 hours, this is a genuinely active four days with two long driving legs. It suits travelers happy to trade some downtime for seeing two distinct ecosystems in a single trip.

DETAILED ITINERARY

4 Days in Uganda-Wildlife & Gorilla Experience

This 4 Days Uganda Wildlife & Gorilla Tour pairs two very different sides of Uganda: the open savannah and boat safari of Lake Mburo National Park, and the misty rainforest gorilla trekking and Batwa culture of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

It's built for travelers who want more than gorillas alone, adding zebras, impalas, hippos, and a proper savannah game drive to the classic Bwindi experience.

Day 1: Visit Lake Mburo National Park for a Boat Safari

Depart Kampala or Entebbe in the morning for the drive to Lake Mburo National Park, around 3.5 to 4.5 hours via the Masaka road, with a stop at the Equator crossing for photos. On arrival, check in at your lodge and have lunch before heading out for an afternoon boat safari on the lake.

The cruise runs 2 to 3 hours and is one of the best ways to see Lake Mburo's hippos, crocodiles, and the birdlife along the shoreline, along with any land mammals that come down to drink.

Day 2: Morning Safari Walk/Game Drive in Lake Mburo and Transfer to Bwindi

After an early breakfast, spend the morning on a game drive or guided walking safari inside the park. Lake Mburo is the only park in Uganda where you'll find impala, and it's also home to large herds of zebra, eland, buffalo, and giraffe.

By late morning, begin the long drive southwest to Bwindi, roughly 5 to 7 hours through Mbarara and Kabale before the final gravel stretch into the park. Arrive at your lodge in the evening, check in, and enjoy dinner before an early night ahead of tomorrow's trek.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Pygmies Cultural Experience

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for the ranger briefing, typically between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, where trekking groups are assigned their gorilla family. The trek through dense rainforest can run from 30 minutes to several hours, followed by a strictly enforced hour with the gorillas. Check our gorilla trekking packing list before you travel, since trails are often steep and muddy.

Most treks wrap up by early afternoon, leaving time to head to the Batwa Cultural Experience, where Batwa guides lead demonstrations of traditional hunting, fire-making, and forest life before Bwindi became a national park.

Day 4: Travel Back to Kampala/Entebbe

After breakfast, begin the return drive to Kampala or Entebbe, retracing the route through Kabale, Mbarara, and Masaka. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours, with stops along the way for lunch and photos, arriving in the evening.
