How This Best of Uganda Safari Works

Rather than a single fixed itinerary, this best of Uganda safari is a flexible template. The core route runs 10 days across the four parks. From there, you can extend to 12 days by adding Lake Mburo, or to 14 days by adding both Lake Mburo and Lake Bunyonyi. Every version is available at Budget, Midrange, or Upmarket lodge tiers, so the trip scales to your travel style without changing the route itself.

The Core 10-Day Route

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe

Arrival at Entebbe International Airport, where you'll be met and greeted before transferring to your hotel for the night. Bed and breakfast.

Day 2: Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park

Depart for Murchison Falls National Park on a panoramic drive northwest through the Luwero Triangle, with an optional stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided rhino tracking walk. Continue on to the park, checking in for the night.

Murchison Falls Protected Area comprises the national park along with Bugungu and Karuma Wildlife Reserves, taking its name from the point where the Nile explodes through a narrow gorge before flowing on as a placid river lined with hippos, crocodiles, and buffaloes. Wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and a wide range of bird species, including the rare shoebill.

Day 3: Murchison Falls, Game Drive & Boat Cruise

An early morning game drive through the park's northern sector, followed by an afternoon boat cruise on the Victoria Nile to the base of the falls, where the river drops 40 metres through a narrow crevice. Overnight at your lodge, full board.

Day 4: Murchison Falls to Kibale Forest National Park

Depart for Kibale Forest National Park, home to the largest concentration of primates in East Africa, including chimpanzees, red colobus monkeys, and the rare L'Hoest's monkey, alongside 325 recorded bird species. Overnight on arrival.

Day 5: Kibale, Chimpanzee Trekking

A guided walk through Kibale Forest in search of habituated chimpanzee communities, followed by an afternoon visit to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a rich area of papyrus and swamp forest known for its birdlife. Overnight at your lodge.

Day 6: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Depart for Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Africa's most diverse ecosystems, where meltwater from the Rwenzori Mountains feeds a wetland system including Lake George, Lake Edward, and the Kazinga Channel. Overnight on arrival.

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth, Game Drive & Kazinga Channel Cruise

A morning game drive through grassy plains and savannah, home to elephants, lions, leopards, and large buffalo herds, followed by an afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, one of East Africa's best wildlife-viewing waterways. Overnight at your lodge.

Day 8: Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Depart for Bwindi, often via the Ishasha sector in search of the region's famous tree-climbing lions. Bwindi sits on the edge of the Albertine Rift, home to roughly half the world's mountain gorilla population, managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, alongside 346 bird species and over 200 butterfly species. Overnight on arrival.

Day 9: Bwindi, Gorilla Trekking

The centerpiece of this best of Uganda safari: a guided trek through dense forest in search of a habituated gorilla family, with up to one hour spent observing them once located. We recommend booking your gorilla permit at least six months in advance. Overnight at your lodge.

Day 10: Bwindi to Entebbe

Transfer back to Entebbe, arriving in time to connect with your onward flight.

End of safari.

Extending Your Trip: 12 or 14 Days

Add Lake Mburo (12 days): insert two nights at Lake Mburo National Park, either at the start or end of the route, for a game drive and boat cruise at Uganda's smallest savannah park, zebras, impalas, and elands included.

Add Lake Bunyonyi (14 days): insert two nights at Lake Bunyonyi after Bwindi, Uganda's deepest lake, for genuine rest and recovery after the gorilla trek, before continuing on to Lake Mburo and back to Entebbe.
