Your Day-by-Day Route Through Uganda and Rwanda

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Welcome to the Pearl of Africa

Your 8-day Uganda Rwanda safari begins the moment you land at Entebbe International Airport, where your Tulambule driver-guide will be waiting to take you to your lodge on the shores of Lake Victoria. If your flight lands with time to spare, take a slow walk through the Entebbe Botanical Gardens or simply settle in and rest before tomorrow's long, scenic drive. Over dinner, your guide will run through the days ahead, confirm your gorilla permit and Nyungwe Zipline & Canopy Walks, and answer whatever questions are on your mind before the adventure properly begins.

Day 2: Kampala to Kabale or Kisoro – Crossing Uganda's Green Spine

After breakfast, you will head southwest through a landscape that keeps changing by the hour: tea and banana plantations, terraced hillsides, and the equator line itself, where most travellers stop for the obligatory photo at Kayabwe. From there the road climbs into the Kigezi highlands, often nicknamed the Switzerland of Africa for their dramatic, tightly terraced valleys. Day 3: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you will head into thick, ancient rainforest with an armed ranger and a tracker, following whatever trail the gorillas left behind that morning.

The trek itself can take anywhere from two to seven hours depending on where the family has wandered, but once you find them, you get a full, unhurried hour in their company. Most people who have done it describe it as one of the most moving wildlife encounters of their life, and it is worth knowing that Uganda's gorilla permits are considerably cheaper than Rwanda's, which is one more reason this itinerary starts on the Uganda side. Day 4: Bwindi to Kigali via the Cyanika Border – Into Rwanda

This morning you will cross into Rwanda through the Cyanika or Katuna border post, both efficient, well-run crossings that rarely take more than an hour. The drive on to Kigali passes through volcanic foothills with the Virunga Mountains often visible in the distance, before dropping into a capital city that tends to surprise first-time visitors with how clean and orderly it is.

In the afternoon, a guided city tour will take you through Kigali's history, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is difficult but important, followed by a lighter walk through the city's markets and coffee shops. Kigali has earned its reputation as one of Africa's safest and most welcoming capitals, and it makes a good place to reset before heading further into Rwanda's forested southwest.

Day 5: Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park

Day 6: The Nyungwe Zip Line and Canopy Walks Adventure

You will start at the Uwinka Reception Centre and hike the Igishigishigi Trail into the heart of the forest before clipping into East Africa's longest zip line, roughly 1,850 to 1,935 metres in total, split across three progressively longer sections named the Monkey, Chimpanzee and Gorilla runs. You will soar twenty to fifty metres above valleys and forest canopy, with Lake Kivu visible in the distance on a clear day.

Once your feet are back on solid ground, you will reconnect with the forest on foot along the Nyungwe Zipline & Canopy Walks, Nyungwe canopy walkway, a 160-metre suspension bridge hanging as high as seventy metres above the forest floor and one of only a handful of canopy walks anywhere on the continent, the only one of its kind in East Africa.

Day 7: Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek and Return to Kigali

Depending on your onward flight, there may be time for a final wander through Kigali's Kimironko Market for coffee and souvenirs before a farewell dinner in the city.

Day 8: Departure from Kigali

When to Go

The good news is that this itinerary works well almost any time of year. The Nyungwe zip line and canopy walk, along with gorilla trekking in both Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park, can be enjoyed in every season, but the two dry stretches, June to September and December to February, give you the clearest forest views, the driest trails, and the most comfortable footing on the zip line platforms.

If you travel during the wetter months of March to May or October to November, you will find fewer visitors, better permit availability, and a moodier, mistier forest that plenty of photographers actually prefer.

Visas and the Border Crossing

Most nationalities need a visa for both Uganda and Rwanda, and the simplest option for this route is the East Africa Tourist Visa, a single multiple-entry visa valid for ninety days that covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya for US$100. Because this itinerary starts in Uganda, you should apply through the official Uganda Immigration e-visa portal at visas.immigration.go.ug, making sure Uganda is registered as your first point of entry, since the East Africa Tourist Visa only works if you enter through the country that issued it.

The land border between Uganda and Rwanda at Cyanika, near Kisoro, or Katuna, near Kabale, is well run and rarely slow, and it forms the natural link between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Volcanoes National Park and Kigali. Your Tulambule guide will handle the paperwork and logistics on the day, but it is worth checking Uganda's official immigration site ahead of time for current entry requirements and any updates to processing times.

What to Pack

Gorilla trekking and a day of zip lining and canopy walking call for slightly different gear, but there is enough overlap that packing for both is straightforward. Bring sturdy, closed hiking boots with good ankle support, though these can also be hired at Nyungwe's reception centres if you would rather travel light.

A lightweight waterproof rain jacket is essential, since Nyungwe's afternoons can turn wet with little warning, and long trousers with long sleeves in neutral colours will serve you well on both the gorilla trek and the forest trails.

Gardening gloves are genuinely useful in Bwindi, where the vegetation along the trail can be thick with nettles. Pack a daypack with at least two litres of water and some energy snacks, a camera or phone with a decent zoom and a spare battery or power bank, insect repellent, sunscreen, and a small personal first-aid kit. Finally, do not forget your passport, printed permits, and your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, all of which you will need at various checkpoints along the way.
