What Each Country Adds to Your Safari

Uganda: Gorillas, Chimpanzees and Big Game

Uganda is the heart of most combined East African safaris. Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga national parks protect about half of the world's mountain gorillas, and a Uganda gorilla trekking permit costs US$800, compared with US$1,500 in Rwanda. In the low season (April, May and November), the permit drops to US$600.

Uganda also offers some of Africa's best chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest, home to around 1,500 chimpanzees. Queen Elizabeth National Park adds tree-climbing lions in Ishasha and boat trips on the Kazinga Channel, while at Murchison Falls the Nile forces its way through a gorge only about 7 metres wide. With more than 1,000 bird species, Uganda is also East Africa's top birding destination.

Rwanda: Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and Luxury Lodges

Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits in the same Virunga range as Uganda's Mgahinga. Treks here are often shorter, and the lodges around the park are among the finest in Africa. You can also track golden monkeys, see chimpanzees and walk the canopy walkway in Nyungwe Forest, and look for the Big Five in Akagera National Park.

Kenya: The Masai Mara and Classic Savannah

Kenya is the classic safari country. The Masai Mara forms the northern part of the Serengeti ecosystem, and from July to October it hosts the famous river crossings of the Great Migration. The Mara also has some of Africa's best big cat viewing all year.

Tanzania's Serengeti is home to the Great Migration for most of the year, and the Ngorongoro Crater holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Best Combined East African Safari Routes

Uganda and Rwanda (7 to 14 Days)

This is the most popular primate route. Start with chimpanzee tracking in Kibale and game drives in Queen Elizabeth, trek gorillas in Bwindi, then cross into Rwanda through the Cyanika border near Kisoro for golden monkeys and a second gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park.

Uganda and Kenya (10 to 14 Days)

This route pairs Uganda's forests and primates with Kenya's open savannah. You trek gorillas and chimpanzees first, then fly to the Masai Mara for big game and, in season, the Great Migration.

Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya (13 to 16 Days)

For the full primate-to-plains experience, this route combines gorilla trekking in Uganda, Rwanda's Volcanoes and Akagera national parks, and classic game drives in Kenya's Masai Mara. It works especially well with the East Africa Tourist Visa, which covers all three countries.

Uganda and Tanzania, With a Zanzibar Extension (11 to 17 Days)

This route links Uganda's gorillas and chimpanzees with the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, connected by a short flight from Entebbe to Kilimanjaro. Add three or four nights in Zanzibar at the end and you have the ultimate safari and beach holiday.

When Is the Best Time for Combined East African Safaris?

The best time for most combined East African safaris is during the two dry seasons: June to September and December to February. Forest trails are drier for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, and animals gather near water on the savannah, making them easier to find.

If the Great Migration river crossings are your priority, plan for July to October in the Masai Mara or northern Serengeti. For calving season in the southern Serengeti, go in January and February.

Gorilla permits sell out early for June to August and December to January, so book three to six months ahead. For lower prices, consider April, May or November, when Uganda's gorilla permit drops to US$600 and many lodges offer discounts. According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority, permits are limited each day, so early booking matters.

How Much Does a Combined East African Safari Cost?

The cost depends on the countries, number of days, lodge level and permits you choose. As a guide, per person per day:

Mid-range: from about US$400
Luxury: from about US$600

Gorilla permits are extra: US$800 in Uganda (US$600 in the low season) and US$1,500 in Rwanda. Including Uganda's gorillas instead of Rwanda's is one of the easiest ways to save on a combined trip.

Visas for Combined East African Safaris

If you are combining Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya, the East Africa Tourist Visa is the simplest option. One visa, costing US$100, lets eligible nationalities travel between all three countries for up to 90 days.
