SAFARI OVERVIEW

The route runs from Kampala or Entebbe west to Kibale, south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, then on to Bwindi via the Ishasha sector, before ending at Lake Bunyonyi for a final day of relaxation. Because the itinerary ends at Lake Bunyonyi rather than back at a park, Day 6 offers a genuine choice of onward route, back to Kampala/Entebbe or on into Rwanda via Kigali, making this a flexible closing point for travelers with either plan.

This 6 Days Uganda Chimps, Lions & Gorillas Safari takes you through three of Uganda's signature experiences: chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, classic savannah game viewing and tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park, and mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, finishing with a restful stop at Lake Bunyonyi.

6 Days Uganda Chimps, Lions & Gorillas Safari

Day 1: Transfer to Kibale National Park and Chimpanzee Tracking in the Afternoon

Depart Kampala or Entebbe in the morning for the drive to Kibale National Park, around 5 to 6 hours through Fort Portal, known as the gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains. After checking in and having lunch, head out for an afternoon chimpanzee tracking walk in Kibale's rainforest, home to one of the highest densities of primates in Africa.

Day 2: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast, continue south to Queen Elizabeth National Park, a scenic 2 to 3 hour drive along the Kichwamba escarpment with views over the Rift Valley and the Kazinga Channel below. Check in at your lodge in the afternoon, with time for an optional short game drive before dinner.

Day 3: Morning Game Drive in Kasenyi Plains, Afternoon Boat Cruise on Kazinga Channel and Evening Game Drive

Start early with a game drive across the Kasenyi Plains, the park's prime wildlife circuit where large herds of Uganda kob, buffalo, and elephant draw predators including lion. Return to the lodge for lunch and a break.

In the afternoon, board a boat for a cruise along the Kazinga Channel, the 32-kilometer waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George, known for its concentration of hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds. Round off the day with an evening game drive, when predators are often more active.

Day 4: Search for Tree-Climbing Lions in Ishasha and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

After breakfast, head south to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park for a game drive in search of its famous tree-climbing lions, a rare behavior found in only a few places on earth. From Ishasha, continue roughly 3 hours to the Ruhija sector of Bwindi, arriving in the afternoon.

Day 5: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for a Relaxing Boat Cruise

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters for the ranger briefing, typically between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, where trekking groups are assigned their gorilla family. The trek through dense rainforest can run from 30 minutes to several hours, followed by a strictly enforced hour with the gorillas. Once the trek concludes, continue roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda's most scenic spots, known locally as the place of many little birds. In the afternoon, unwind with a relaxing boat cruise around some of the lake's 29 islands.

Day 6: Transfer Back to Kampala or Kigali

After breakfast, choose your onward route. Travelers heading back into Uganda face a 7 to 8 hour drive to Kampala or Entebbe. Those continuing into Rwanda can cross the border toward Kigali instead, a journey of roughly 3 to 6 hours depending on the crossing and road conditions, a useful option if your next stop is Kigali International Airport or a Rwanda extension.
