1 Day Gorilla Trek Rwanda Safari.

DESTINATIONS:

Volcanoes National Park-Rwanda

DURATION:

01 Day

SAFARI OVERVIEW

Volcanoes National Park sits roughly 2 to 2.5 hours from Kigali, making a there-and-back trek realistic in a single long day. The trek itself is generally considered less physically demanding than Uganda’s Bwindi treks, since Volcanoes National Park’s terrain tends to be less steep, though a reasonable level of fitness is still needed. For more on how the permit system works, see our Uganda gorilla trekking permits booking and pricing guide, which also covers how Rwanda’s process compares.

Because gorilla families move daily, trek duration varies. Some groups are found within an hour of starting; others take most of the morning to reach.

Safari Highlights

5:00 AM. Pick up from your Kigali hotel and transfer to Volcanoes National Park, a scenic drive of roughly 2 to 2.5 hours as the sun comes up over the hills north of the city.

7:00 AM. Arrive at the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and the mandatory gorilla trekking briefing, where trekking groups are assigned their gorilla family for the day.

8:00 AM.Begin the trek itself, which can run anywhere from 2 to 6 hours round trip depending on where the assigned gorilla family is located that day. Once found, you'll spend a strictly timed hour in their company before heading back down.

Afternoon. After the trek, begin the drive back to Kigali, arriving in the evening in time for dinner or your onward flight.

Rwanda's gorilla permit currently costs USD 1,500 per person, issued directly by the Rwanda Development Board, the official body managing Volcanoes National Park. Permits are limited to a fixed number of trekkers per gorilla family each day, so early booking is strongly recommended. The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15.
