Mount Elgon National Park: Complete Guide to Hiking Wagagai Peak, Caves and Sipi Falls

ABOUT THE PARK

Mount Elgon National Park protects the Ugandan side of Mount Elgon, a huge extinct volcano on the border with Kenya. Its slopes rise from coffee farms and waterfalls through montane forest and bamboo to open moorland, where giant groundsels and lobelias stand around one of the largest volcanic calderas on Earth.

It is one of Uganda's most rewarding and least crowded parks. Here you can hike to Wagagai Peak at 4,321 metres, explore ancient caves, walk to the famous Sipi Falls and meet the Bagisu and Sabiny people who farm the mountain's fertile slopes.

This complete guide covers the hiking trails, attractions, wildlife, fees, where to stay, the best time to visit and how to get there.

Why Visit Mount Elgon National Park?

  • A summit you can walk: Wagagai Peak needs fitness, not ropes. It is one of the highest summits in East Africa that a keen hiker can reach without technical skills.
  • A giant caldera: the crater at the top covers about 40 square kilometres, ringed by jagged peaks and dotted with hot springs.
  • Uncrowded trails: you will meet far fewer hikers than on Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya.
  • Sipi Falls on the doorstep: three beautiful waterfalls, abseiling and coffee tours sit on the park's lower slopes.
  • Easy to reach: the trailheads are only 4 to 6 hours from Kampala on good roads.
  • Cool climate: a refreshing contrast to Uganda's hot savannah parks.

The Volcano and Caldera of Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano that first erupted more than 24 million years ago. Geologists believe it was once taller than Kilimanjaro, before millions of years of erosion wore it down. What remains is a vast, gently rising mountain with one of the widest bases of any free-standing volcano in the world.

At the top lies the caldera, a huge crater of about 40 square kilometres. Its rim is crowned by peaks including Wagagai (4,321 m), the highest point on the Ugandan side, and Sudek, Koitobos and Mubiyi. The Suam River cuts a gorge out of the caldera, with hot springs along its course.

Mount Elgon National Park joins Kenya's Mount Elgon National Park across the border, and together they form a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve. The Kenyan side is famous for Kitum Cave, where elephants dig for salt.

Hiking Trails in Mount Elgon National Park

Hikers crossing the moorland on a Mount Elgon National Park trail

Four main trails lead to the caldera and Wagagai Peak. All hikes are led by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, with porters available to carry your bags and camping gear.

Trail Trailhead Days Character
Sasa Trail Budadiri, near Mbale 3 to 4 The shortest and steepest route to the summit
Sipi Trail Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, near Sipi 4 to 6 A gentler climb through forest and caves
Piswa Trail Kapkwata, northern side 5 to 6 Gradual, scenic and good for wildlife
Suam Trail Suam, on the Kenya border 6 or more The longest and wildest, past the hot springs

Many hikers go up one trail and down another, for example up the Sasa Trail and down the Sipi Trail, to see more of the mountain. We will match the route to your fitness and time.

The Summit Hike to Wagagai Peak

The summit hike passes through every vegetation zone on the mountain: montane forest, bamboo, heath and finally the Afro-alpine moorland with its giant groundsels and lobelias. You sleep in simple campsites along the way, and the final day takes you across the caldera to the top of Wagagai.

No ropes or ice gear are needed, but the hike is long and steep in places. Good fitness, warm clothing and a slow pace for acclimatisation make all the difference.

Day Hikes and Nature Walks

Not ready for a multi-day trek? Short guided walks from the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre lead through montane forest to waterfalls, caves and viewpoints. They are excellent for birds and monkeys and can easily be done in a morning. For more ideas, see our 13 best day hikes in Uganda.

Caves of Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon is riddled with caves carved out of old volcanic deposits. On the Ugandan side, the most visited are near the Sipi Trail and the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, including Tutum Cave and the Kapkwai caves. Some were used for shelter by local communities, and some are visited by animals at night to lick salt from the walls.

Look for signs of elephants, buffalo and duikers near cave entrances, and ask your ranger about the old stories connected to them. Kitum Cave, the most famous elephant cave, lies on the Kenyan side of the mountain.

Sipi Falls

Abseiling beside Sipi Falls on the slopes of Mount Elgon

On the lower slopes of Mount Elgon in Kapchorwa District, Sipi Falls is a set of three waterfalls, the highest plunging about 100 metres over a cliff. From the top you look out across the plains towards Karamoja.

Activities include guided waterfall hikes to all three falls, abseiling beside the main fall, rock climbing and coffee tours with local farmers, who grow the famous Bugisu Arabica. Sipi is the perfect base for day hikes in the park and for the Sipi Trail. Read our full Sipi Falls guide, or book our 3-day Sipi Falls tour.

Wildlife in Mount Elgon National Park

Most visitors come for the hiking, but the forests and moorlands of Mount Elgon National Park are full of life. On walks you may see black-and-white colobus, blue monkeys, De Brazza's monkeys, olive baboons, bushbuck and duikers.

Elephants and buffalo live in the forest but are shy and rarely seen. Leopards, hyenas and other predators are present, though sightings are rare, so treat any encounter as a bonus.

Birding in Mount Elgon National Park

Over 300 bird species have been recorded in Mount Elgon National Park, including several that are found in Uganda only on this mountain. Specials include:

  • Jackson's francolin, Uganda's only population, high on the moorland
  • Lammergeier, or bearded vulture, soaring over the caldera
  • Hartlaub's turaco, Tacazze sunbird and alpine chat
  • White-starred robin, black-collared apalis and moorland francolin

The forest between 2,000 and 3,000 metres is the richest birding zone, and early mornings are best. Plan a dedicated trip with our Uganda birding tours.

Culture Around Mount Elgon National Park

Bagisu Imbalu ceremony near Mount Elgon National Park

The slopes of Mount Elgon are home to the Bagisu (Bamasaba) and Sabiny people. The Bagisu are famous for Imbalu, a traditional circumcision ceremony for young men, held in even-numbered years, usually in August, with music, dance and huge crowds.

You can visit coffee farms, learn how Bugisu Arabica is grown and roasted, and enjoy local food such as malewa, a smoked bamboo-shoot dish. These visits support the communities that live alongside the park.

Best Time to Visit Mount Elgon National Park

The best time to visit is during the drier months of June to August and December to February. Trails are firmer, the views from the caldera are clearer, and the hike is far more comfortable.

March to May and September to November bring heavier rain, slippery trails and cloud over the summit, but the forest is green and birding is excellent. If you want to see the Imbalu ceremony, plan an August visit in an even-numbered year.
