2 Day Rwanda Gorillas and Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

DESTINATIONS:

Volcanoes National Park Rwanda, Dian Fossey Tomb.

DURATION:

02 Days

SAFARI OVERVIEW

The route runs from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, with the Dian Fossey hike on day one and gorilla trekking on day two, before returning to Kigali. For background on gorilla permits and how Rwanda’s system compares to Uganda’s, see our Uganda gorilla trekking permits booking and pricing guide.

Visiting Fossey’s grave before the trek gives useful context for what follows, tracing the same trails and forest where her research and advocacy shaped the conservation efforts that keep these gorilla populations alive today.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Rwanda Gorillas and Dian Fossey Tomb

This 2 Day Rwanda Gorillas and Dian Fossey Tomb Hike pairs Rwanda's two most meaningful Volcanoes National Park experiences: a hike to the grave of Dian Fossey, the primatologist whose research put mountain gorilla conservation on the map, and a full day tracking the gorillas she dedicated her life to protecting.

It's built for travelers who want more context behind the trek itself, not just the hour with the gorillas, and who have two days rather than one to spend in the Volcanoes region.

Rwanda Gorillas and Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

Day 1: Travel to Volcanoes National Park, Dian Fossey Tomb Hike

Depart Kigali in the morning for the scenic 2 to 2.5 hour drive to Volcanoes National Park. After checking in, head out for the hike to Karisoke Research Center, Fossey's former camp, climbing through bamboo forest on the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. The hike typically takes 2 to 3 hours each way, passing the graves of several gorillas Fossey studied before reaching her own resting place at the site.

Overnight: lodge near Volcanoes National Park (full board).

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking, Drive Back to Kigali

After an early breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and the mandatory briefing, typically starting around 7:00 AM, where trekking groups are assigned their gorilla family. The trek can run from 2 to 6 hours depending on the family's location that day, followed by a strictly timed hour in their company. Afterward, begin the drive back to Kigali, arriving in the evening.

Rwanda's gorilla permit currently costs USD 1,500 per person and the Dian Fossey hike permit USD 75 per person, both issued by the Rwanda Development Board, the official body managing Volcanoes National Park. The minimum age for both activities is 15.
