Sipi Falls is a chain of three beautiful waterfalls on the green foothills of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda. Found in Kapchorwa District, about an hour's drive north-east of Mbale, Sipi Falls sits on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park, close to the Kenya border.
It is one of the best short escapes from Kampala. In two or three days you can hike to all three waterfalls, abseil down a 100-metre cliff, join a farmer for a hands-on coffee tour and watch the sun set over the plains below.
At about 1,800 metres above sea level, the air is fresh and cool, and the hillsides are covered in Arabica coffee, banana gardens, flowers and colourful chameleons. This guide covers the three falls, the best things to do at Sipi Falls, how to get there, where to stay, costs, the best time to visit and our Sipi Falls tours.

Why Visit Sipi Falls?
Sipi Falls shows a side of Uganda many visitors never see. The east is far quieter than the classic safari circuit, and here you can hike through real village life, coffee farms and waterfalls without crowds.
- Three waterfalls in one hike: few places in East Africa let you see so many big falls in a single day's walk.
- Adventure on tap: abseiling, rock climbing and long ridge hikes for active travellers.
- Coffee culture: taste Bugisu Arabica where it grows, roasted over a fire by the farmer who picked it.
- Cool mountain air: a welcome break from the heat of Kampala and the savannah parks.
- Easy to combine: stop in Jinja on the way, climb Mount Elgon, or continue north to Kidepo.
It is perfect for a weekend away from the noise of Kampala, a stop on the way to Kidepo National Park in the far north-east, or a fresh, active add-on to a longer Uganda safari.
The name Sipi comes from "sep", a wild plant that grows along the riverbanks. Local people have long used it as a traditional remedy for fevers and measles.
The Three Waterfalls of Sipi Falls

1. The First Waterfall (about 85 metres)
The first fall plunges about 85 metres into a deep pool as the Sipi River rushes down from Mount Elgon. A trail leads to a ledge part-way up the cliff, behind the falling water.
It looks daunting from below, but it is a safe and spectacular viewpoint over the valley and the Mount Elgon slopes when you go with a guide.
2. The Second Waterfall (about 65 metres)
Below the first fall, the river winds through farms and villages before dropping about 65 metres over a wide cliff. This is the smallest of the three, and after a steep hike it makes a refreshing natural shower in the dry season.
Behind the fall is a cave where you can sit in the cool spray and look out through the curtain of water. In the rainy season the flow gets strong, so always follow your guide's advice before going close.
3. The Main Waterfall (about 100 metres)
The last and tallest drop is the main Sipi Falls, about 100 metres high. This is the waterfall most people picture when they think of Sipi, and on sunny afternoons rainbows dance in its spray.
At its base is a large plunge pool. Brave visitors can take a dip in the cold water, while others simply enjoy the view from the lodges and viewpoints above.
Best Things to Do at Sipi Falls
1. Hike to All Three Waterfalls
The classic Sipi Falls hike visits all three waterfalls in one day, walking with a local English-speaking guide through coffee farms, banana gardens and small villages. You will cross streams, spot chameleons in the bushes and enjoy views across the valley.
The full loop takes about four to six hours, with steep, sometimes slippery sections. Your guide can easily shorten it if you prefer a gentler walk. Bring swimwear and a towel if you would like a dip.
2. Abseil Down the 100-Metre Falls

For an adrenaline rush, try abseiling down the cliff beside the main 100-metre waterfall. Trained guides provide all the equipment and a full safety briefing, and the activity takes about two hours in total.
You lower yourself slowly down the rock face with the roar and mist of the falls right beside you. No experience is needed, and it is one of the most exciting adventure activities in Uganda.
3. Join a Sipi Coffee Tour
Mount Elgon's slopes grow some of Uganda's finest Arabica coffee, known as Bugisu coffee. Small family farms work together in cooperatives and sell their beans around the world.
On a coffee tour, a local farmer shows you the whole journey from bean to cup. You pick ripe red cherries, remove the husks, roast the beans over an open fire and grind them with a wooden mortar and pestle. Then you enjoy a fresh cup of strong Sipi coffee, and your fee goes straight to the farming family.
4. Rock Climbing
The cliffs around Sipi have a range of bolted climbing routes for beginners and experienced climbers. Local guides supply ropes, harnesses and helmets, and the views over the valley from the top are superb.
5. Enjoy the Viewpoints and Sunset Walks
Short walks lead to rocky viewpoints above the falls, with sweeping views over the plains towards Karamoja and Lake Kyoga. A late-afternoon walk to a viewpoint is the perfect way to end the day as the sun sets over the lowlands.
6. Explore More Waterfalls Nearby
Eastern Uganda is full of waterfalls. Within reach of Sipi you can visit Chebonet Falls on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park, Sisiyi Falls near Bulambuli, and Wanale Falls on the ridge above Mbale. See our best day hikes in Uganda for more ideas.
7. Climb Mount Elgon
Sipi is the starting point for the Sipi Trail on Mount Elgon, Uganda's second-highest mountain after the Rwenzoris. Wagagai Peak, at 4,321 metres, is reached on a four to six day hike through forest, bamboo and moorland to the rim of one of the world's largest volcanic calderas. Read our Mount Elgon National Park guide to choose your route.
8. Visit the Land of Champions
The Sebei region around Kapchorwa is famous for long-distance running. Olympic and world champions such as Stephen Kiprotich, Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Chemutai and Jacob Kiplimo come from this part of Uganda, which is why it is known as the "land of champions".
Athletes from around the world now come to train at altitude here. You can join a guided run on the same trails, or simply enjoy watching local runners at dawn.
9. Community and Village Walks
Guided community walks introduce you to the Sabiny and Bagisu people of the Mount Elgon region. You can visit homesteads, learn about farming on the steep slopes and hear about local traditions.

Sipi Falls Costs and Fees
Sipi Falls lies outside the national park, so there is no Uganda Wildlife Authority entrance fee for the falls themselves. Instead, visitors pay local fees for the activities they choose:
- Waterfall hikes: paid to a registered local guide, usually per person or per group.
- Abseiling and rock climbing: paid to the operator and include equipment and instruction.
- Coffee tours: paid to the farming family or cooperative that hosts you.
- Mount Elgon hikes: include Uganda Wildlife Authority park fees of US$35 per day for foreign non-residents.
Prices vary by season and group size, so we include every activity, guide and fee in your quote. Always book through registered guides or your lodge, and avoid unofficial guides who approach you on the road.
