Uganda Visa Requirements: 7 Essential Things Every Traveller Must Know

June 19, 2026

Understanding Uganda visa requirements before you travel is one of the most important steps in planning a successful safari or holiday to the Pearl of Africa. Getting your visa wrong — applying too late, choosing the wrong type, or arriving without the correct documentation — can cause serious disruption to a trip you may have been planning for months.

This guide covers the 7 essential Uganda visa requirements every international traveller must know before departure. Whether you are visiting for gorilla trekking in Bwindi, a wildlife safari in Murchison Falls, or a chimpanzee trek in Kibale Forest, this guide tells you exactly what you need to do — step by step and without confusion.

Uganda Visa Requirements: 7 Essential Things Every Traveller Must Know

1. Know Whether You Need a Uganda Visa at All

The very first Uganda visa requirement to establish is whether your nationality even requires a visa. Uganda maintains visa-free entry agreements with approximately 40 countries under bilateral arrangements. If your country is on the exempt list, you can enter Uganda without applying in advance.

Citizens of the following countries currently enter Uganda visa-free for tourism, business, or family visits. Most are permitted to stay for up to 90 days.

Africa: Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Comoros, Eritrea, Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Eswatini.

Asia and Pacific: Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu.

Caribbean and Americas: Jamaica, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Europe and Middle East: Ireland, Cyprus, Malta, and the United Arab Emirates.

Citizens of most other countries — including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, the Netherlands, China, Japan, and India — are required to apply for a Uganda e-Visa before departure. US citizens should take particular care to verify current Uganda entry requirements before booking, as reciprocal visa policy adjustments between Uganda and the United States have affected standard processing in recent years.

Always confirm your specific situation through the Uganda Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control before booking your flights. The official portal is the only fully reliable source of current information on Uganda visa requirements.

2. Choose the Right Uganda Visa Type for Your Trip

One of the most common and costly mistakes travellers make is applying for the wrong visa type. Uganda offers several visa categories, and choosing the correct one from the start saves time, money, and unnecessary complications.

Single Entry Tourist Visa This is the most commonly used visa for international safari travellers. It currently costs USD 50 plus a small administration fee and is valid for up to 90 days from the date of approval. It permits one entry into Uganda and can be extended for an additional 60 days at the Uganda Immigration offices in Kampala on Jinja Road if your plans change while you are in the country.

Multiple Entry Visa The multiple entry visa allows unlimited entries into Uganda within its validity period of up to 24 months. It is ideal for frequent visitors, business travellers, and those making regular cross-border journeys between Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and the DRC. Fees vary and should be confirmed on the official portal at the time of application.

Transit Visa The transit visa is for travellers passing through Uganda en route to another destination. It is valid for a maximum of 7 days, is available through the same online system, and is considerably cheaper than a tourist visa. It is suitable for stopovers at Entebbe International Airport or overland border crossings.

East Africa Tourist Visa The East Africa Tourist Visa — known as the EATV — covers Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda under a single application. It currently costs USD 100, is valid for 90 days, and allows multiple entries across all three countries. This is the most practical and cost-effective option for travellers combining a Uganda safari with a Kenya game drive or a Rwanda gorilla trek. It is covered in full detail in section 4 below.

3. Apply for Your Uganda e-Visa the Right Way

Uganda moved to a fully digital visa system and no longer routinely processes visa applications at the border. All applicants must apply online before travel through the official Uganda Immigration Portal. Arriving without a pre-approved e-Visa creates a serious risk of being denied boarding by your airline or turned back at the border on arrival.

The application process takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Here is exactly how to complete it correctly.

Step 1 — Visit the official portal only. Go to www.immigration.go.ug. Never use third-party agents or unofficial websites — they charge inflated fees and may submit incorrect documentation on your behalf.

Step 2 — Create an account and select your visa type. Register using a valid email address and select the visa category that matches your purpose of travel. Read each category carefully — choosing the wrong type is one of the most common application errors.

Step 3 — Complete your application form accurately. Fill in your personal details, passport information, intended travel dates, and Uganda contact address. Your hotel, lodge, or safari camp name and address is sufficient for the accommodation field. Ensure all details match your passport exactly.

Step 4 — Upload your supporting documents. Upload clear, legible scanned copies of your passport data page, a recent passport-sized photograph, your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, proof of accommodation booking, and your return or onward flight ticket. Blurry or incomplete documents are the most common cause of delays and rejections.

Step 5 — Pay your fee and print your approval letter. Pay online using a credit or debit card. The fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome. Once approved, you will receive an electronic approval letter by email — print this and carry it to Uganda alongside your passport. Your biometric data will be captured at the border on arrival.

Processing typically takes 3 to 5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before your departure date to allow sufficient buffer time, especially during peak safari seasons when application volumes are higher.

4. Consider the East Africa Tourist Visa if You Are Visiting Multiple Countries

If your itinerary includes Uganda alongside Kenya or Rwanda — which is increasingly common for travellers combining gorilla trekking with Maasai Mara game drives or Volcanoes National Park — the East Africa Tourist Visa is one of the most valuable and practical options available to you.

For USD 100, the EATV gives you 90 days of multiple-entry access across Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda under a single application. Applying for three separate single-entry visas for each country would cost USD 130 in total — making the EATV both cheaper and significantly more convenient.

The EATV is especially popular with travellers who fly into Nairobi for a Kenya safari before crossing overland to Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It is equally practical for travellers arriving in Kigali and crossing into southwestern Uganda to visit Queen Elizabeth National Park or Kibale Forest. The visa covers all border crossings between the three countries within the 90-day validity period without any additional documentation.

There is one critical rule — your first entry point must be the country through which you applied for the EATV. If you apply through Uganda, you must enter Uganda first. Applications can be submitted through the Uganda, Kenya, or Rwanda immigration portals. Rwanda's Irembo portal is widely regarded as the most straightforward of the three for EATV applications.

5. Get Your Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate Before You Travel

A valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is a mandatory Uganda visa requirement for all travellers entering the country, regardless of nationality or visa status. Uganda is classified as a Yellow Fever risk country and border officials routinely check vaccination certificates at all entry points — including Entebbe International Airport and all major land border crossings.

The vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before your arrival in Uganda to be considered valid. The certificate is issued on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis — commonly known as the yellow card. Keep this document alongside your passport throughout your entire trip, as it may be checked at multiple points if you are crossing between Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya.

Travellers who cannot receive the Yellow Fever vaccine for documented medical reasons must carry a letter from a licensed physician explaining the contraindication. Entry may still be permitted at the discretion of border officials, but this is never guaranteed. Do not rely on a medical exemption letter as a reliable substitute for vaccination.

Book your Yellow Fever vaccination at least 3 weeks before your departure date — not only to allow the required 10-day pre-arrival window but also to give yourself time to source the vaccine if supply is limited at your local travel health clinic. This is one Uganda visa requirement that cannot be sorted at the last minute.

6. Check Your Passport Validity and Available Pages

Your passport is the foundation of every Uganda visa requirement listed in this guide — and an expired or nearly expired passport can invalidate your entire application even before you reach the border. Uganda requires that your passport has a minimum of 6 months validity remaining beyond your intended departure date from the country.

A passport expiring within 6 months of your travel dates will be rejected at the border. Your e-Visa application may also be flagged and declined during the online review process if the expiry date does not meet the minimum requirement. Do not assume your application will be approved and then flag the issue at the airport.

Your passport must also have at least one or two blank pages available for Uganda visa stamping. A full passport with no blank pages is one of the most avoidable and frustrating reasons for entry complications at busy border crossings. If your passport is approaching expiry or running low on pages, renew it before applying for your Uganda visa and booking your travel.

7. Know How to Extend Your Visa and What Happens If You Overstay

The final essential Uganda visa requirement is understanding what to do if your plans change after you arrive. If you wish to stay in Uganda longer than your original visa permits, extensions are available for single entry tourist visas. You can extend for up to 60 additional days by applying online or visiting the Uganda Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control offices in Kampala.

Always apply for your extension before your current visa expires. Overstaying a Uganda visa — even by a small number of days — triggers formal enforcement actions by Uganda immigration authorities. These actions are recorded and can seriously affect your ability to obtain future visas across the East Africa region, including Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania.

Extensions are subject to approval and a fee payable at the time of application. Begin the extension process at least one week before your visa expires to give yourself sufficient time in case of any administrative delays. If you are unsure whether you need an extension, speak to your tour operator before your visa runs out — not after.

Practical Tips for Meeting Uganda Visa Requirements Without Stress

Before we close this guide, here are five practical tips that will make the Uganda visa requirements process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Apply at least 2 weeks early. Processing takes 3 to 5 business days, but peak safari season brings delays. Give yourself a generous buffer and never apply within days of your departure.

Print all your documents. Carry printed copies of your e-Visa approval letter, Yellow Fever certificate, accommodation confirmation, and return flight ticket. Border officials expect printed documents — digital copies on your phone are backups only.

Use the official portal only. The Uganda immigration portal is www.immigration.go.ug. Never pay an unofficial third-party agent to process your Uganda visa — the official system is simple, secure, and designed to be completed without assistance.

Double-check your passport before applying. Confirm at least 6 months validity and available blank pages before submitting your e-Visa application.

Stay updated before every trip. Uganda visa requirements and bilateral agreements change periodically without significant advance notice. Always verify the current situation directly on the official portal or through your tour operator before booking flights.
