Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans: Where You Can Travel Without a Visa
Visa-free countries for Ugandans now number 65, according to the July 2026 Henley Passport Index, which ranks the Ugandan passport 72nd in the world. That count includes every country you can enter without a visa, or with a visa given on arrival.
That means beach holidays, city breaks and safaris across Africa, the Indian Ocean and Asia. No embassy queues. No visa fees you lose if you are refused.

Quick facts for Ugandan travellers
- Visa-free or visa on arrival: 65 countries
- No passport needed: Kenya and Rwanda accept your national ID
- Always carry: passport, return ticket and hotel booking
- Europe: no visa-free countries in the EU or UK, but a few offer quick e-visas
- New: South Africa now offers Ugandans an online travel authorisation
- Most popular trips: Zanzibar, Mombasa, Kigali, Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives, Singapore and Malaysia
Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans Still Have Entry Rules
In March 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reminded Ugandans that visa-free travel still has entry conditions. You must show a valid passport, a return air ticket and proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking.
A few countries also use a "visa-nil" system. The visa is free, but you must fill in a short online form before you fly. Skip it, and the airline can refuse to board you at Entebbe. Read the government's full explanation here.
When you book with us, we prepare your flight, hotel confirmation and any online forms together. You arrive at immigration with everything in order.
What You Need at the Border
Immigration officers decide who enters, even in visa-free countries for Ugandans. Keep these in your hand luggage:
- Passport valid for at least six months, with blank pages
- Return ticket. One-way tickets are the top reason Ugandans are questioned on arrival.
- Hotel booking for your whole stay
- Proof of funds, such as a bank statement or credit card
- Yellow fever card. Mauritius, Seychelles, Singapore, Malaysia and many others ask for it.
- Online arrival forms where needed, such as the Seychelles Travel Authorisation, Singapore's SG Arrival Card or Malaysia's Digital Arrival Card
Travelling to Kenya or Rwanda? Your Ugandan national ID is enough. That makes Nairobi and Kigali the easiest weekend trips from Uganda.

Is the New List of 40 Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans?
Not quite. In March 2026, the Ministry of Internal Affairs published a list of 40 countries whose citizens can enter Uganda without a visa. That list is about visitors coming to Uganda, not the places Ugandans can travel to.
Many countries appear on both lists, including Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Mauritius, Seychelles, Singapore and Malaysia. But some do not work both ways. The UAE, South Africa and Cyprus, for example, only waive visas for Ugandan diplomatic and service passports. Ordinary passport holders still need a visa or an online authorisation, so check the full list above before you book.
Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans in Europe
This is one of the most common questions we get, so here is the honest answer. There are no visa-free countries for Ugandans in the European Union, the Schengen Area or the United Kingdom. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland and the UK all need a visa before you travel. Turkey needs one too.
A few European countries outside the EU are easier, because they offer online e-visas:
- Georgia: e-visa online. Holders of some valid visas or residence permits, such as a Schengen, UK or US visa, can enter without one.
- Albania: e-visa online, or visa-free if you hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen, UK or US visa.
- Moldova: e-visa online, or visa-free with a valid EU or Schengen visa or residence permit.
For Paris, Rome, Amsterdam or any other Schengen country, one visa covers 29 countries. Our Schengen visa guide for Ugandans explains the documents, fees and waiting times, and we can prepare your application with your holiday booking.
Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans in Asia
Asia has more choice than many travellers expect. These are the visa-free countries for Ugandans in Asia, plus the easiest visa-on-arrival and e-visa options:
- No visa needed: Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Hong Kong, each for up to 30 days
- Visa on arrival: Maldives, Bangladesh and Timor-Leste (30 days), Cambodia and Laos (30 days), Nepal (up to 90 days) and Macau
- Quick e-visa: Thailand, Indonesia (Bali), Vietnam, India and Qatar, plus Sri Lanka's online travel authorisation
Singapore and Malaysia make the easiest pair, linked by a short coach ride. See our Singapore and Malaysia holiday package, or our 8 day Thailand holiday if you would rather have beaches and temples. We arrange the Thai e-visa for you.

New: South Africa's Online Travel Authorisation for Ugandans

Good news for Cape Town lovers. Since late September 2026, Ugandan passport holders can apply online for South Africa's Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA). There is no more embassy visa process for short holidays.
The South African High Commission in Kampala confirmed the change to Uganda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
South Africa eTA at a glance
- Who: Ugandan passport holders on holiday or short business trips. Work and study still need a regular visa.
- Apply: online only, at the official South Africa eTA website (eta.dha.gov.za)
- You need: a photo of your passport and a live selfie for face matching
- Fee: R500 (about USD 28), which may not be refundable
- Processing: the target for tourists is 24 hours
- Stay: up to 90 days, arriving at an airport approved for eTA travel
Be careful of fake sites. Only apply on the official government address ending in dha.gov.za. Lookalike websites charge extra fees.
An approved eTA does not guarantee entry. Carry your return ticket, hotel booking, proof of funds and yellow fever card as usual.

Expert Tips for Ugandans Travelling Visa-Free
- Never travel on a one-way ticket. Airlines may refuse to board you.
- Print your documents. Phones die. Paper copies don't.
- Respect your allowed stay. Overstaying brings fines and future bans.
- Get travel insurance. Medical care abroad is expensive.
- Carry newer US dollar notes. Many countries reject notes printed before 2009.
- Build your travel history. Trips to visa-free countries for Ugandans strengthen future UK, Schengen and US visa applications.
