12 Best Beaches in Kenya: Diani, Watamu, Malindi and Lamu

January 31, 2026

The best beaches in Kenya stretch along about 536 km of Indian Ocean coastline, with powder-white sand, coral reefs, mangrove creeks and old Swahili towns. Kenya is famous for safaris, but its coast is just as rewarding, and it is one of the easiest beach holidays to reach from Uganda.

The main gateway is Mombasa, an island city bordered by beaches such as Nyali, Bamburi and, further south, Diani. Further north lie Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi and the Lamu archipelago. Whether you want to relax, travel with children, dive and snorkel, or watch whales and turtles, there is a Kenyan beach for you.

This guide covers the 12 best beaches in Kenya, where to stay at each one, the best time to go, how to get there from Uganda and how to add a safari. It is written by our team at Tulambule, a licensed tour operator that plans Kenya beach holidays from Kampala and Entebbe.

1. Diani Beach

Diani Beach lies about 30 km south of Mombasa and is often named among the best beaches in Kenya and in Africa. Coconut palms frame a long stretch of soft white sand, protected by a coral reef that keeps the water calm for swimming.

Diani is the coast's busiest resort area, with everything from luxury hotels to simple guesthouses. Popular activities include kitesurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, deep-sea fishing and even skydiving. Divers and snorkellers can reach many reefs within an hour by boat.

Look out for green and hawksbill turtles, and from about November to March, whale sharks offshore. Families enjoy glass-bottomed boat trips over the reef.

A day trip south to Wasini Island and Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park is one of the coast's highlights, with dolphins, snorkelling and a seafood lunch. Inland, Shimba Hills National Reserve offers elephants and the rare sable antelope.

Where to Stay in Diani

  • Baobab Beach Resort
  • Elewana AfroChic Diani Beach
  • Alfajiri Villas

2. Nyali Beach

Nyali Beach lies just north of central Mombasa and is the closest of the best beaches in Kenya to the city. It is one of Kenya's oldest beach resorts and has been popular since the mid-20th century.

Despite being close to town, Nyali is a lovely swimming beach lined with established hotels. It is easy to combine with sightseeing in Mombasa, including Fort Jesus, the narrow streets of Old Town and the Haller Park nature reserve.

Where to Stay in Nyali

  • Severin Sea Lodge
  • Voyager Beach Resort
  • Muthu Nyali Beach Hotel and Spa

3. Gazi Beach and Chale Island

For seclusion, Gazi Beach is one of the best beaches in Kenya. It lies about 45 km south of Mombasa, on a secluded bay sheltered by Chale Island. The water is calm and old coconut groves give welcome shade from the equatorial sun.

The north side of the bay has one of the largest mangrove forests in southern Kenya. A boardwalk run by a local women's group lets you see several mangrove species, mudskipper fish and the mangrove kingfisher. Chale Island's small beach is reserved for guests of its only resort.

Where to Stay at Gazi and Chale

  • The Sands at Chale Island, an eco-friendly island resort

4. Bamburi and Shanzu Beaches

Bamburi and Shanzu are neighbouring beaches that run for more than 5 km south of Mtwapa Creek, about 10 km north of central Mombasa. They are among the most popular beaches in Kenya, with a suburban setting but idyllic sand that is best for swimming at high tide.

Things to do include diving, windsurfing and snorkelling trips into Mombasa Marine National Park, as well as seaside restaurants.

Where to Stay in Bamburi and Shanzu

  • Serena Beach Resort and Spa, plus several other resort hotels

5. Kenyatta Beach

Among the best beaches in Kenya for a local experience is Kenyatta Beach. Named after Kenya's founding President Jomo Kenyatta, it is a public beach about 9 km north of central Mombasa. It is a favourite with Mombasa families, which makes it a good place for a relaxed, local beach day.

It gets busy at weekends but is calmer during the week. Glass-bottomed boats leave from here for the coral gardens of Mombasa Marine National Park.

Where to Stay near Kenyatta Beach

  • Most visitors stay at nearby Bamburi or Nyali and visit Kenyatta Beach for the day.

6. Galu Beach

Galu Beach, sometimes called Galu Kinondo, lies just south of Diani and is a quieter choice among the best beaches in Kenya. It shares Diani's white sand but feels quieter and less developed, with more coastal bush behind the beach.

Nearby, Kaya Kinondo is a sacred forest of the Mijikenda people and part of the UNESCO-listed Mijikenda Kaya Forests. Guided walks introduce local traditions, and colobus and vervet monkeys live in the trees.

Colobus Conservation, a local charity, runs eco-tours that support research and the protection of these monkeys. Galu is also popular for kitesurfing and paddleboarding, and divers can see moray eels, scorpionfish and seahorses.

Where to Stay in Galu

  • Pinewood Beach Resort and Spa
  • Neptune Paradise Beach Resort and Spa
  • Lantana Galu Beach

7. Kikambala Beach

Kikambala Beach, about 33 km north of Mombasa, is one of the most peaceful of the best beaches in Kenya. The road ends a few hundred metres from the shore, but if you like quiet sand and snorkelling, it is worth the short walk.

The sand is dazzling white, and at low tide you can walk out to the coral reef. It is popular with the local community, so the beach comes alive in the evening with families and children playing football.

8. Kilifi

Kilifi, about 70 km north of Mombasa, adds a beautiful creek to the best beaches in Kenya. It has grown into a creative, laid-back town with cafes, beach bars and a young crowd, while Bofa Beach offers palm-fringed sand and good kitesurfing.

Take a boat trip on Kilifi Creek to see fish eagles and carmine bee-eaters, and visit the Mnarani Ruins, the remains of a Swahili town with 15th-century mosques overlooking the creek. Kilifi is also a good base for Watamu's marine park.

Where to Stay in Kilifi

  • Distant Relatives Ecolodge for budget travellers
  • Kilifi Bay Beach Resort for more comfort

9. Watamu

Watamu, about 105 km north of Mombasa, is one of the best beaches in Kenya and one of the most beautiful stretches of sand on the coast. It has three bays, Watamu Bay, Blue Lagoon and Turtle Bay, all with white sand, clear water and coconut palms.

Watamu Marine National Park protects coral gardens full of angelfish, parrotfish and turtles. Local conservation groups rescue and release sea turtles, and visitors can learn about their work. From about July to October, humpback whales pass offshore.

Inland, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is one of the largest surviving coastal forests in East Africa, home to rare birds such as the Sokoke scops owl. The Gede Ruins, a 13th-century Swahili town hidden in the forest, make a fascinating half-day visit.

Where to Stay in Watamu

  • Hemingways Watamu, named after the American writer who fished on this coast
  • Ocean Sports Resort and Turtle Bay Beach Club, both good for watersports

10. Malindi

Malindi, about 120 km north of Mombasa, combines some of the best beaches in Kenya with history. It is one of Kenya's oldest and most interesting coastal towns. It has its own airport, which makes it easy to reach.

Historic sights include the Vasco da Gama Pillar, raised by the Portuguese explorer in 1498, an old Portuguese chapel and Swahili pillar tombs. A strong Italian community means excellent seafront restaurants and ice cream shops.

Snorkelling and diving in Malindi Marine National Park are easy to arrange, as are safaris to Tsavo East National Park.

Where to Stay in Malindi

  • Driftwood Beach Club, good for families
  • The Lawford, a historic seafront hotel

11. Mamburi

Mamburi lies about 25 km north of Malindi, beyond the mouth of the Galana River. This wide, unspoilt beach is backed by tall golden dunes and is one of the wildest beaches in Kenya, ideal for travellers who want to get off the beaten track.

Swimming and kitesurfing are the main activities, and Mamburi is easy to visit as a day trip from Malindi.

Where to Stay in Mamburi

  • Che Shale, a rustic, family-run beach retreat

12. Lamu Island and the Lamu Archipelago

Boats anchored in turquoise water off the Lamu archipelago, Kenya

Lamu lies far up the north coast, about 215 km beyond Malindi, and most visitors fly in. Here slow travel rules: there are almost no cars, donkeys carry goods through the lanes, and traditional crafts such as boat-building and wood carving are still part of daily life.

Lamu Old Town has been lived in for more than 700 years. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved Swahili towns in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its carved wooden doors.

Shela Beach, with kilometres of empty sand, is one of the best beaches in Kenya for peace and quiet. A sunset dhow trip around the island and into the mangroves is a must, and longer dhow trips include snorkelling and nights under the stars. In town, look for the Flipflopi, a sailing dhow built from recycled plastic.

Where to Stay in Lamu

  • Peponi Hotel in Shela, a beachfront hotel run by the same family since 1967
  • Many guesthouses and boutique hotels in Lamu Old Town

Best Time to Visit the Best Beaches in Kenya

The Kenyan coast is warm all year, with sea temperatures of about 25 to 29°C. The best weather comes in two dry spells:

  • December to March: hot, sunny and calm, with the best diving visibility and whale sharks around Diani.
  • July to October: slightly cooler and breezy, good for kitesurfing, and the season for humpback whales off Watamu.

The long rains from April to June bring heavier showers, and some smaller lodges close for part of this time. The short rains in November are usually brief. Read our full guide to the best time to visit Kenya.

How to Reach the Best Beaches in Kenya from Uganda

  • Direct flight to Mombasa: Uganda Airlines flies non-stop from Entebbe to Mombasa in about 1 hour 50 minutes.

  • By train: the Madaraka Express railway runs between Nairobi and Mombasa, a scenic ride past Tsavo.

Combine a Kenya Safari with a Beach Holiday

A few days of safari followed by the best beaches in Kenya is a classic East African holiday. Tsavo East and Tsavo West are only a few hours from Mombasa, Amboseli offers views of Kilimanjaro, and the Masai Mara is a short flight away.

Uganda travellers can also add gorillas first: trek in Bwindi, see the Masai Mara, then relax on the coast. These trips are ready to book or customise:

Tips for Visiting the Best Beaches in Kenya

  • Check the tides: some beaches, such as Bamburi, are best for swimming at high tide, while low tide is perfect for reef walks.
  • Protect the reef: the coral is what makes the best beaches in Kenya special, so use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on coral.
  • Use licensed boat operators: book snorkelling and dhow trips through your hotel or a trusted company.
  • Respect local culture: the coast is mainly Muslim, so cover up when you leave the beach, especially in Lamu and Mombasa Old Town.
  • Prevent malaria: the coast is a malaria area, so use repellent and ask your doctor about prevention.
