The Batwa used to live a traditional hunter-gatherer life inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest until the national park was established and they were kicked out.

The open savannah grasslands of this 2,850 km2 park are dotted with towering baobabs – “the bizarre upside-down trees”, the largest trees in Africa. Elephants congregate in herds of up to 600 animals, and the large numbers of game animals attract numerous predators especially lions.

Day 7: Drive To Serengeti
Start your day with an early breakfast and then embark on a long scenic drive of about 5 to 6 hours north. Travel through rural Masai villages and Ngorongoro Conservation Area, skirting the mighty volcanic Ngorongoro Crater and into the famous Serengeti Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Serengeti, together with Maasai Mara of Kenya, form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of Acacia trees on endless savannah plain epitomizes Africa for many. Then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need to go no further – this is Africa! You’ll enjoy a packed lunch and game viewing en route.
You’ll reach your camp/lodge in the central Serengeti in the afternoon and spend three memorable nights here. The picture-perfect landscape of central Serengeti is characterized by endless stretches of savannah-covered open plains, interspersed by rocky outcrops of granite, scattered with acacia woodlands, and covered in a network of streams and rivers.
Central Serengeti forms part of “the Great Wildebeest Migration”, an iconic and dramatic scene in wildlife documentaries for decades and a true Africa safari bucket list experience. This part of the park is also home to the fabulous Seronera Valley, the best place in Africa to see Lions, Leopards, Cheetahs, and Hyenas on thrilling hunts.
After settling in the lodge, you’ll go on your first official game drive in the Serengeti. You’ll learn more about this legendary game park as you drive along and look for some of the fantastic fauna and flora that call this place home.
One of the seven natural wonders of Africa, the Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest and most scientifically significant ecosystems on the planet. Its weather patterns, fauna, and flora are believed to have changed very little for as long as a million years or more, giving the area an incredible prehistoric presence.
This morning you will enjoy an early breakfast and then set off on a morning game drive. You’ll return to your lodge for lunch and maybe a siesta in the heat of the day.
Then you will go out again in search of more animals and birds on an afternoon game drive. The Endless Plains of the Serengeti span almost 1.5 million hectares and are home to over 3 million beautiful wild animals.
These high numbers of animals are due to the diverse habitats, including riverine swamps, forests, kopjes, grasslands, and woodlands.
Packs of painted wolves, prides of African Lion, Cheetah, Leopard, and Hyenas are often seen tailing the herds of the Blue Wildebeest, Plains Zebra, Topis, and Gazelles.
Serengeti is also home to a diversity of grazers, including African Buffalo, African Elephant, Warthog, Eland, and Waterbuck. With so much on the go, it is not hard to see the full spectrum of classic African wildlife on even one game drive!
Day 9: Another Full In Serengeti
Today, you have another full day in Serengeti. You will enjoy breakfast and lunch at the camp, with morning and afternoon game drives included.
The local Maasai people have a name for the Serengeti; ‘Siringet’ which means ‘endless plains’ or ‘the land that goes on forever’. Great stretches of African savannah grassland dotted with flat-topped Acacia trees give the Serengeti that classic Out of Africa feel.
Many people say that the sunsets in the Serengeti National Park are the most beautiful on earth, with the sky turning a palette of pinks, purples, and oranges before disappearing over the horizon.
Day 10: Drive to Ngorongoro Crater
After a relaxing breakfast, you enjoy one last game drive in Serengeti, as you transfer to Ngorongoro Conservation Area – another World Heritage Site.
En route, you’ll visit the Olduvai Gorge Museum – located near the site where archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the remains of Homo habilis, one of the earliest members of the human genus in the 1960s.
After exploring the area, you’ll have your lunch and continue to Ngorongoro. On the way, you’ll learn some cool facts about this incredible natural geological wonderland.
The name Ngorongoro actually comes from the Maasai; the Maasai pastoralists named the area after the sound produced by the cowbell (ngoro ngoro)!
The main feature of this 8,500 km2 conservation area is the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken volcanic caldera on Earth. It was formed about 2 million years when a giant volcano, almost the size of Mount Kilimanjaro exploded dramatically and collapsed on itself.
The caldera is surrounded by incredibly steep walls rising 600 m above the floor of the volcano. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and a must-visit place on any safari in East Africa.
It is also listed as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders, along with the Red Sea, Mount Kilimanjaro, Sahara Desert, Wildebeest Migration, Nile River, and Okavango Delta.
Also, an International Biosphere Reserve, Ngorongoro is best known for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife. The grasslands within the crater are home to almost 30,000 large mammals, including all the Big 5. The crater offers visitors a high chance of seeing all the members of the Big 5 in one place – arguably one of the best-known Ngorongoro Crater facts.
On arrival, you will check in your lodge, and enjoy dinner before falling asleep under the vast, star-filled African sky. Enjoy!
After an early breakfast, you will descend the crater and have an extensive game drive inside, enjoying a picnic lunch on the 260 km2 crater floor.
Get ready to see some spectacular fauna and flora! Most of the animals are relaxed in the presence of humans and vehicles, and the cloud-draped crater walls make for dramatic pictures and memories. After exploring the crater, you will ascend and drive back to Arusha.
A 6-day Tanzania safari gives you just enough time to experience three of East Africa’s most iconic wildlife parks without rushing a single moment. Over six days, you will move through Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater — each one offering a completely different landscape, ecosystem, and cast of animals.
Whether you are watching elephant herds gather around Tarangire’s ancient baobabs, tracking the Great Migration across the Serengeti plains, or gazing into the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, every day brings something you will not forget. This itinerary is crafted for travellers who want a genuine, unhurried wildlife experience guided by people who know Tanzania well.
Day 1: Arrive At Kilimanjaro International Airport
Your amazing 6-day Tanzania Safari will start as soon as you touch down at the Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania. This airport is not called the – Gateway to Africa’s Wildlife Heritage – for nothing; you are close to some of the best-known wildlife reserves in the world.

Dubbed the safari capital of Tanzania, Arusha is located on the southern slopes of Mount Meru, close to the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro.
The city is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara, Tarangire and Arusha National Parks. It was built by the Germans as a center of colonial administration due to its temperate climate. It’s also a major international diplomatic hub and has been a very important city in Tanzania’s history. It was also the setting for the 1962 film Hatari!, starring the legendary John Wayne.
You’ll have dinner at the hotel tonight and also learn a bit about Tanzania. This fantastic country is one of the best safari destinations in the world, boasting some of the best game reserves on Earth. They’re often encountered in huge herds of about 300 animals – an incredible sight for even the most seasoned safari-goers.
Elephants aside, Tarangire has one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife outside Serengeti. The dry season influx of herbivores sees a profusion of wildebeests, hartebeests, zebras, gazelles, elands, giraffes and buffalos near river and around residual pools. Such profusion of prey attracts the attention of predators – mainly lions. Tarangire lions are renowned, not only for their marshy hunting techniques, but also for their habit of climbing trees.
Leopards, cheetahs, and the painted wolves of Africa, endangered wild dogs are also present. Tarangire is also the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as Fringe-eared Oryx and Gerenuk are often seen. Bird lovers will be mesmerized by over 550 species.

The ash from the huge volcano that collapsed here created fertile soil that encouraged rich savanna grasslands, which now support some of the largest herds of hoofed animals in the world. This of course attracts numerous predators and birdlife.
Within the crater lies so many types of ecosystem, including open plains, freshwater, alkaline lakes and riverine forests. The scenery is spectacular as you descend almost 600m down to the crater floor. There is every chance you’ll see a variety of wildlife in this compact area- hopefully you’ll see some or all of the ‘Big 5’ animals that rule here
Animals in Ngorongoro Crater are less shy of people and safari vehicles, so it’s easier to see them up close. The Masai People are allowed to water their cattle at the permanent lake and can be seen leading their animals in and out of the crater.
The most frequently seen animals are the lion, elephants, wildebeest, zebra, eland, bushbuck, cheetah, jackal, buffalo, gazelles. You may even catch a glimpse of the highly endangered black rhinos.
This morning you will leave the mighty Ngorongoro crater behind and drive to the legendary Serengeti National Park. You will enjoy a game drive on your way to your accommodation, watching the landscape change within the national park from the vast treeless central plains to thick scrub and forest in the north.
Linking these areas is the savanna, dotted with acacia trees and magnificent rock outcrops. You may tour the Simba Kopjes, an outcrop favoured by lion and cheetah as high perches and a place to hide their cubs, and they can often be seen basking in the morning sun on top. (Simba is Swahili for lion and kopje Afrikaans for – little head).
You will stop for a picnic lunch on the drive from Ngorongoro Conservation area to the Serengeti. Enjoy the comfort of a tented camp or lodge within the national park.
The ‘Endless Plains’ of Serengeti National Park span some 14,700 km2 and capture the essence of Africa, with their main claim to fame the 3 million or so animals that make their home here.
Huge numbers of grazing animals and numerous predators can be seen – wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, gazelle, lion, cheetah, warthog, hyena, hippo, crocodile, Jackals, bat-eared fox, and ostrich – and the interaction between the many species often provides some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world.
Today you will start around sunrise for a morning game drive and follow that up later on with an afternoon game drive, as the animals tend to be more active in the cooler hours of the day. You will usually return to camp during the hotter hours in the middle of the day, where you will enjoy a hearty meal, relax and maybe take a siesta.
Depending on wildlife movements and opportunities for sightings, the drive may continue through lunch and last all day. In this case, you will return to the camp in the late afternoon.
Optional Activity:
There is also an opportunity for a balloon ride over Serengeti plains today. If you have pre-booked this activity you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site.
After a safety briefing, you’ll glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, which provides amazing photo opportunities. Sometimes you’ll ascend, getting an overview of the enormity of the plains and the early morning movements of the teeming herds. After landing, you will be treated to a five-star bush breakfast, then be returned to your camp or lodge.

Together, Tanzania and Uganda offer the perfect blend of family-friendly safari activities, diverse wildlife encounters and spectacular landscapes, creating an extraordinary African holiday that will be remembered for years to come.
Here is a simple guide to the Tanzania National Parks, entrance fees, and permits. The National Parks of Tanzania are mainly found on the country’s 4 “safari circuits”. These safari circuits consist of an itinerary of destinations designed to minimize traveling time and maximize the experience.
Tanzania is a large and diverse country; thus, each circuit offers its unique magic, divergent scenery, and appealing wildlife encounters. The northern, southern, western, and eastern safari circuits encompass a selection of parks, wildlife reserves, conservation areas, and even, in the case of the eastern circuit, Indian Ocean islands, marine parks, and gorgeous beaches, that visitors can choose based on their interests.
The northern circuit parks are the most popular on this list of Tanzania parks. They include destinations that are the stuff of safari, travel, and film-making legend. If you’re a first-time visitor to Tanzania, the northern circuit is the best place to start. It has some of Tanzania’s best roads.
Every destination here is easily accessible. There are also a variety of accommodation options available for every budget, from basic campsites to some of Africa’s most luxurious lodges. The northern circuit starts from Lake Victoria in the west to Mount Kilimanjaro in the east, and it is bounded by the border of Kenya to the north and Tarangire Park to the south. It includes such iconic Africa safari destinations like Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and, more time should be spent exploring these places than others.
Unlike the busy northern circuit, the Tanzania National Parks on the southern safari circuit are remote and wild. This region of Tanzania is known for its back-to-basics and authentic approach, where exploring on foot is an essential part of the experience and you can go for days without encountering another tourist. Much of this area is relatively arid compared to the luscious plains of the north but still incorporates areas with thriving swamps, verdant forests, and spectacular waterfalls.
Unlike the southern and northern Tanzania safari circuits, the western circuit breaks away somewhat from the more traditional African safari fare. It is a shorter and more specialised safari circuit and should be combined with aspects from the northern or southern circuit if resources and time allow.

On a Tanzania luxury safari, you will enjoy the continent’s breathtaking scenery and finest wildlife viewing.
In hand-picked areas like the Ngorongoro and Serengeti, a Tanzania luxury safari tour offers world-class exclusive and upmarket camps and lodges.
On a Tanzania luxury tour, you have to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration, the Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth as it passes through the Serengeti plains
Tanzania’s Southern and Western circuits are best suited to fly-in upmarket safaris, with the Western circuit in particular ranking among the most exclusive and costly in Africa.
Tanzania luxury safari lodges (accommodation)
Whether you are visiting Tanzania to watch greatest wildlife show on Earth, to hike Africa’s talles mountain or to explore the world’s largest caldera, you will need a place to stay. There are three broad categories of accommodation for luxury safaris in Tanzania. These include wildlife lodges, semi-permanent tented camps and exclusive five-star permanent lodge;
1. Wildlife Lodges
The best represented accommodation category for Tanzania luxury safari tours comprises large wildlife lodges. These normally rank highly in terms of conventional hotel-style amenities, but they also tend to feel rather removed from the surrounding bush.
2. Semi-permanent tented camps
At the other extreme of Tanzania luxury safari accommodation are exclusive permanent or semi-permanent tented camps. These mainly comprise canvas units that typically come with comfortable beddings, en suite hot showers and private verandahs. These camps also offer high-quality cuisine, service and wine.
3. Exclusive five-star permanent lodges
Falling in between the wildlife lodges and semi-permanent tented camps are small, exclusive 5-star permanent lodges that might be described as the safari equivalent of boutique hotels.
If it is possible, look for Tanzania luxury safari packages that offer a mix of accommodation types, as each has its advantages. For example, a high-class tented camp is almost certainly the most hands-on way to experience the wilderness of Africa. But, after a few nights, the superior amenities of a larger lodge might come as a welcome break. If facilities such as 24-hour electricity, Wi-Fi or swimming pools are important to you, then ensure you research and choose your accommodation carefully.
How much does a luxury safari cost in Tanzania?
The Tanzania luxury safari costs are highly variable. But an all-inclusive luxury safari in Tanzania can cost at least US$450 to US$600 per person per day. The coast will increase to around US$950 per person per day – if you stay in small top-of-the-range luxury lodges and camps. What you pay for your luxury Tanzania safari depends on just how exclusive you want your holiday to be. Other cost factors are the parks you include in your Tanzania safari itinerary, and whether you travel in high, low or mid-season.
What is included in a Tanzania luxury safari?
A Tanzania luxury tour usually includes domestic flights and road transport, as well as game drives, other Tanzania safari activities and the associated guides and park fees.
Your accommodation on a full-board basis is typically included too. Some Tanzania luxury safari lodges and exclusive camps also include laundry and non-premium drinks like coffee, tea, soft drinks, local beer and house wine. Besides souvenirs and other personal purchases, the most obvious exclusion from most luxury Tanzania safari quotes is tips. These can add up quickly in Tanzania as tipping is widely practiced, so you are advised to carry enough cash to cover it.
Do all Tanzania Luxury Safaris include the Serengeti?
The answer is No. Travel logistics mean most Tanzania safari packages, luxury or otherwise, concentrate on just one of the three different safari circuits. The Serengeti is almost invariably the key destination of any Tanzania Northern circuit safari package. Northern circuit tours also typically include the Ngorongoro Crater and some, or all, of Arusha, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks. Safaris to Tanzania’s Southern and Western safari circuits rarely include the Serengeti.
Finding the right destination for a family holiday can be a difficult task, but with our Tanzania family adventure safaris, there’s no need to worry. Tanzania Family Adventure Safaris and Holiday Packages with Kids
If you have ever wondered about taking your kids on safari in Africa, Tanzania could be the best place to start. Our Tanzania family adventure safaris give you access to world-class national parks and safari attractions that appeal to every age group, including Serengeti National Park, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara. There are safari parks in Tanzania where you can see some of the most fascinating animals on the planet; your kids will never look at a zoo the same way again after a visit here.
Tanzania’s Indian Ocean beaches are equally special, with sheltered, accessible shorelines. Although some activities may be age-specific for safety reasons, adventures like snorkelling amid Zanzibar’s vibrant marine life could be your child’s starting point for a lifelong love of the ocean.
Tanzania is also known for its highly experienced, professional tourism sector, and is widely regarded as one of Africa’s safer destinations for family travel. Whether your Tanzania family adventure safari centres on wildlife viewing in the national parks or a relaxing beach holiday on the coast, we highly recommend combining both.
Accommodation across Tanzania is well set up to host families and has been for many years. Above all, though, it’s the people of Tanzania who make this such a special destination for a family trip. Watch how your guide’s face lights up when they meet your children for the first time, and you’ll understand exactly what we mean.
Where Is Best in Tanzania for a Family Trip with Kids?
There are two main areas in Tanzania where travelling with kids makes the most sense for a Tanzania family adventure safari. The first is the northern Tanzania safari circuit, home to a wide choice of national parks.
Accommodation and tour operators in this northern region have more experience catering to families than counterparts elsewhere in the country, and the wildlife here is some of the best found anywhere in Africa.
The second area well suited to families is Zanzibar, which leans more toward cultural and beach tourism, with a tourism industry every bit as experienced as the mainland safari sector.
Best Things to Do on a Tanzania Family Adventure Safari with Babies and Toddlers
A Beach Holiday
If you’re planning a Tanzania family adventure safari with a baby or toddler, a beach holiday in Zanzibar makes far more sense than a wildlife-viewing safari. Taking a very young child out into the bush is anything but relaxing, since you’ll spend the whole time making sure your toddler doesn’t wander toward the dangers of the unfenced bush, from larger predators down to biting insects.
Zanzibar has outstanding beach resorts with child-friendly swimming pools, expansive lawns, playgrounds, and restaurants. In areas like Nungwi, at Zanzibar’s northern tip, the beaches front onto gentle, almost wave-free lagoon waters, ideal for younger children.
Best Things to Do on a Tanzania Family Adventure Safari with Kids
Wildlife Viewing Safari
There’s nothing quite like seeing your first lion, hyena, leopard, or elephant in the wild, an experience your children will never forget. Most game drives in Tanzania take place in open-sided 4×4 vehicles with canvas roofs and tiered seating, so there’s nothing between you and the animals.
It’s perfectly safe, but even the calmest child’s heart will skip a beat when a lion or elephant looks their way from just a few metres off. Serengeti National Park is possibly the best safari destination in the world, and the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara National Parks all sit within a short drive of each other, each equally thrilling for spotting Africa’s wildlife.
Maasai Cultural Visits
Much of northern Tanzania sits on the traditional lands of the Maasai people, and a Tanzania family adventure safari offers plenty of opportunities for a guided cultural encounter with a Maasai village. This is especially true around the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where village visits take you through a working Maasai community.
Children are always treated as special guests here, often invited into family homes and welcomed to take part in ceremonial dances. Paired with an expert Maasai guide, it can be a genuinely soulful encounter your kids will talk about long after they’ve returned home.
Beach Activities
You may simply want to rest at a beach resort, but there’s plenty of opportunity for more. The waters around Zanzibar, Mafia, and Pemba Island are rich in marine life and coral reef, making snorkelling a regular option. For something special, take a dhow, a traditional wooden sailing boat, out onto the turquoise water for a picnic lunch on the ocean.
Best Things to Do on a Tanzania Family Adventure Safari with Tweens and Teens
Many of the same activities that delight younger kids, wildlife safaris, cultural encounters, and snorkelling, go down just as well with tweens and teens. A few extra highlights are worth adding for this age group.
Hot-Air Balloon Safari
A hot-air balloon safari over the endless plains of the Serengeti is a magical way to experience this landscape. It’s an expensive addition to a Tanzania family adventure safari, but a genuine once-in-a-lifetime experience, whether you’re looking down on migrating wildebeest or watching the sun rise over the savannah.
Learn to Hunt with the Hadzabe
Tanzania’s Lake Eyasi area is home to the Hadzabe people, one of the last true hunter-gatherer societies in the world, who still live in the traditional manner. Unlike many cultural encounters elsewhere in Tanzania, a visit here includes joining the morning hunt for food, something the Hadzabe would be doing regardless of visitors. It’s an exciting, genuine immersion into a culture that has largely resisted the trappings of the modern world.
Cooking Classes
A recurring highlight across Tanzania, from Arusha to Zanzibar, is a market tour with a local chef followed by a lesson in cooking traditional Swahili dishes. It’s a welcome change of pace and offers real insight into everyday local life.
Scuba Diving
Tanzania has several dive schools, and teens on a Tanzania family adventure safari may want to try something more challenging than snorkelling. Learning to scuba dive in Africa is the kind of story teenagers love bringing home to friends.
Tips for Planning a Tanzania Family Adventure Safari
Taking a baby on safari can be costly, and many operators recommend, or insist on, a private safari so the cries of even the best-behaved toddler don’t disturb wildlife or other travellers nearby.
Consider travelling in low season, when accommodation and tour rates are lower and the parks are quieter. Whatever your children’s ages, talk to them about safari etiquette beforehand, and make sure they follow their guide’s instructions at all times.
Avoid trying to cover too much ground, particularly with younger children; it’s better to see a few places well than rush through many. Most accommodation now offers Wi-Fi, even in remote areas, though it’s often limited to communal spaces. Manage expectations in advance so your kids know where they’ll be able to check in with friends back home.
