The Schengen visa for Ugandans is the key that opens most of Europe, because right now no country in the Schengen Area lets ordinary Ugandan passport holders in without a visa. One Schengen visa covers 29 countries, from France and Italy to Germany, Greece and Switzerland, so you only need to apply once for a trip across several of them.
Many travellers search for visa-free countries for Ugandans in Europe and find confusing or outdated lists. As a Kampala travel agency that books European holidays and helps clients with visa applications, we have put everything in one place: where to apply in Kampala, current fees, the documents embassies ask for, and how to avoid a refusal.

Are There Visa-Free Countries for Ugandans in Europe?
The short answer is no. Ordinary Ugandan passport holders need a visa to enter every Schengen country, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Turkey. Visa-free access in Europe only applies to some diplomatic and service passports, not the passports most of us travel on.
You may have seen news reports this year listing Ireland among visa-free destinations for Ugandans. Be careful here. Ireland's official list of visa-required nationalities still places Uganda in the visa-required column, so plan for an Irish visa.
The good news is that a Schengen visa for Ugandans works across 29 countries, and a multiple-entry one can also get you into several European countries outside the Schengen Area. If you want somewhere you can go without a visa at all, our guide to 65 visa-free countries for Ugandans lists destinations in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
What Is a Schengen Visa for Ugandans?
A Schengen visa is a short-stay visa, also called a type C visa, that lets you visit the Schengen Area for tourism, business, family visits or events. You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across all the member countries together.
In practice, a Schengen visa for Ugandans is usually issued for the exact dates of your trip. Frequent travellers with a good record of using earlier visas correctly may be given a multiple-entry visa valid for longer.
The Schengen Area has 29 member countries:
- Western Europe: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland
- Southern Europe: Croatia, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain
- Northern Europe: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden
- Central and Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia
Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City have no border checks with their neighbours, so your Schengen visa covers them in practice. Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen Area, and the UK, Ireland and Turkey each need their own visa.
Since 10 April 2026, the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) records your fingerprints and photo at the border instead of stamping your passport. This changes nothing about the Schengen visa for Ugandans itself, but expect a short biometric check on your first arrival. ETIAS, the online travel permit, is only for visa-free nationalities, so it does not apply to Ugandan passport holders.
Where to Apply for a Schengen Visa for Ugandans in Kampala
You apply for a Schengen visa for Ugandans to the country that is your main destination, meaning the one where you will spend the most nights. If your nights are equal, apply to the country you will enter first. Each embassy uses its own system, and some handle applications for other countries too.
| Main destination | Where to apply in Kampala |
|---|---|
| Germany | TLScontact, after booking an online appointment |
| France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Czechia, Monaco | Visa section of the French Embassy, 16 Lumumba Avenue, by appointment |
| Netherlands, Hungary, Slovenia | VFS Global application centre |
| Sweden | VFS Global application centre (decided by the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi) |
| Other Schengen countries | Check that country's embassy for Uganda, which will name the mission that represents it |
These arrangements change from time to time, so always confirm on the official page before you book an appointment. Useful starting points are the German Embassy Kampala, France-Visas for Uganda and Netherlands Worldwide.
Schengen Visa for Ugandans: Fees and Processing Time
The fee for a Schengen visa for Ugandans is the same at every embassy, because it is set by the EU:
- Adults (12 years and over): €90
- Children aged 6 to 11: €45
- Children under 6: free
On top of this, visa centres charge a service fee. For example, TLScontact charges €39 for German applications. Germany and France both ask you to pay in Ugandan shillings, in cash, at the embassy's exchange rate, so carry the exact amount.
A decision on a Schengen visa for Ugandans usually takes 15 calendar days. It can take longer, up to 45 days in exceptional cases, especially in busy seasons. You can apply up to six months before your trip and no later than 15 days before, but we advise applying six to eight weeks ahead, particularly for June to August and December travel.
How to Apply for a Schengen Visa for Ugandans in 7 Steps
- Choose your main destination. Plan your route and count your nights per country. This decides which embassy you apply to.
- Check who handles that country in Kampala. Use the table above, then read that embassy's checklist for tourist visas.
- Get your flight and hotel reservations. Embassies want a return flight reservation and confirmed accommodation for every night. Use bookings you can cancel or change if the visa is refused.
- Buy travel medical insurance. Every Schengen visa for Ugandans requires insurance. It must cover at least €30,000, be valid in all Schengen countries and cover every day of your trip.
- Gather your documents. Follow the checklist below and make sure names and dates match on every page.
- Book your appointment and submit in person. You fill in the form online, then attend with your passport and originals. Fingerprints are taken unless you gave them for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months.
- Track and collect your passport. Follow your application online, then collect in person or through someone you authorise in writing.
Documents Needed for a Schengen Visa for Ugandans
Each embassy has its own checklist, but the Schengen visa for Ugandans usually needs these documents:
Personal documents
- Ugandan passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months after your return, with at least two blank pages
- Copies of previous visas, especially earlier Schengen, UK or US visas
- Completed and signed application form
- Recent passport photos that meet the embassy's size rules
Travel documents
- Return flight reservation
- Hotel bookings or an invitation letter from your host
- Day-by-day itinerary
- Travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover
Proof of funds and ties to Uganda
- Bank statements for the last three to six months, stamped by the bank
- Employment letter with your role, salary and approved leave, or business registration documents if you are self-employed
- Sponsorship letter and the sponsor's bank statements, if someone else is paying
- For children, birth certificates and a notarised consent letter from parents who are not travelling
Bring originals and copies of everything. If a document is not in English, the embassy may ask for a certified translation.

Tips to Avoid a Schengen Visa Refusal
Most refusals of a Schengen visa for Ugandans that we see come from small, avoidable mistakes rather than the applicant's background. Keep these points in mind:
- Match every date. Your flights, hotels, insurance and itinerary must all cover the same days.
- Show steady funds. A large deposit just before you apply raises questions. A regular income and a healthy balance over several months look far stronger.
- Prove you will come back. A job, a business, property, family or studies in Uganda all show strong ties to home.
- Apply to the right embassy. Applying to an easier country while spending most nights elsewhere can lead to refusal or trouble at the border.
- Be honest. State your real purpose of travel, and never submit altered bank statements or fake bookings.
- Build your travel history. Previous trips outside East Africa, such as Dubai, Mauritius or Singapore, with visas used correctly and on-time returns, strengthen your next Schengen visa for Ugandans. See our visa-free holiday ideas below.
If you are refused, the letter will give the reason and explain how to appeal. Often it is faster to fix the weak point and apply again. A new Schengen visa for Ugandans application with the gap fixed has a much better chance.
Build Your Travel History With Visa-Free Holidays
Embassies look closely at where you have travelled before. A passport with trips outside East Africa, each with a return on time, shows that you travel for leisure and come home. For a first-time applicant, this is often the difference between a weak and a strong Schengen visa for Ugandans.
The good news is that you can build that record without any embassy queue. Mauritius, Seychelles, the Maldives, Singapore and Malaysia all welcome Ugandans without a visa in advance, and they are proper international trips that consular officers recognise. Our guide to 65 visa-free countries for Ugandans has the full list and entry rules.
A smart plan is one or two of these holidays in the year before you apply. Keep your boarding passes, hotel receipts and entry stamps, and list each trip on your application form. It will not guarantee a Schengen visa for Ugandans, but it gives the embassy real evidence of how you travel.
Countries You Can Visit With a Schengen Visa
A Schengen visa for Ugandans is even more useful than it looks. Several European countries outside the Schengen Area let visa-required travellers in on a valid Schengen visa, which is a smart way to add an extra country to your trip:
- Serbia: single or multiple-entry visa, up to 90 days in any 180 days, as long as the visa is valid for your whole stay
- Montenegro: multiple-entry visa, up to 30 days
- Bosnia and Herzegovina: multiple-entry visa, up to 30 days
- Albania: multiple-entry visa that you have already used to enter the Schengen Area, up to 90 days in any 180 days
- North Macedonia: multiple-entry visa, up to 15 days
- Georgia: multiple-entry visa, up to 90 days in any 180 days
- Cyprus: double or multiple-entry visa, up to 90 days in any 180 days
Rules like these change without much notice, and border officers have the final say. We confirm the current rule with each country before we book any part of your trip.

Europe Outside Schengen: UK, Ireland and Turkey
A Schengen visa for Ugandans does not cover every part of Europe. The UK, Ireland and Turkey run their own visa systems, so plan for a separate application if they are on your route.
United Kingdom
The UK has its own visa. A Standard Visitor visa for up to six months costs £135 since 8 April 2026. You apply online, then give your fingerprints and photo at the UK visa application centre in Kampala. A decision usually takes about three weeks. A Schengen visa does not let you enter the UK.
Ireland
Ireland is in the EU but not in the Schengen Area, so it needs a separate Irish visa. You start the application online, then follow the Irish Embassy in Kampala's instructions for submitting your passport and documents.
Turkey
Ugandan passport holders need a visa for Turkey. You apply in person at the Turkish visa handling office in Kampala, on Yusuf Lule Road, with no appointment needed. A single-entry visa costs US$60 plus a US$95 service fee, travel insurance is compulsory, and your passport must be valid for at least one year. Processing takes about two weeks.
How Tulambule Helps With Your Schengen Visa
We are a licensed travel agency in Kampala, and our air ticketing and visa assistance desk supports Ugandans travelling to Europe every year. Whether it is your first Schengen visa for Ugandans or a repeat trip, here is what we do for you:
- Review your documents against the embassy checklist before your appointment
- Book flight reservations and confirmed, refundable hotel bookings that match your itinerary
- Arrange travel insurance that meets the €30,000 Schengen requirement
- Write a clear day-by-day itinerary for the embassy
- Book your actual flights, hotels, cruises and tours once your visa is approved
To be clear, only the embassy decides on a visa. No agent can guarantee approval, and you should be wary of anyone who promises one. What we can do is make sure your application is complete, consistent and honest, which gives you the best possible chance.
