SAFARI OVERVIEW

DETAILED ITINERARY

Sipi Falls, the first highlight of this off the beaten track Uganda safari, plunges off the cliffs of Mount Elgon.

The drive takes about 6 to 7 hours with stops. You arrive in time to watch the sun set over the Karamoja plains from your lodge. Read more in our Sipi Falls guide.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Sipi Heritage Lodge (formerly Sipi River Lodge) or Rafiki Lodge Sipi

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3: Sipi Falls Hike and a Mount Elgon Coffee Tour

Spend the morning on a guided hike to the three waterfalls of Sipi, through farms, caves and banana groves. The trail is steep in places, but your local guide sets an easy pace and knows every viewpoint.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Sipi Heritage Lodge or Rafiki Lodge Sipi

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4: Sipi to Moroto and the Karamojong People

Drive north into Karamoja, passing the open plains of Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve on the way to Moroto. The green hills give way to dry savanna, granite peaks and cattle herded by warriors with long sticks. This is where your off the beaten track Uganda safari truly begins.

In Karamoja, you are welcomed into family life in a traditional homestead.

In the afternoon, a local guide takes you to a Karamojong homestead, or manyatta. You learn how families live with their cattle, hear their songs and see the beadwork and dress that make this culture so distinctive. Our Karamoja region guide explains more.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Kara-Tunga Safari Camp, on the slopes of Mount Moroto

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5: Moroto to Kidepo Valley National Park

Continue north through Kotido and Kaabong, with time to stop in Karamojong villages along the way. The drive takes about 5 to 6 hours. You reach Kidepo Valley National Park in the early afternoon.

After settling in, head out on your first game drive in the Narus Valley. Kidepo is often called Africa's last true wilderness, and on this 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari you share it with only a handful of other visitors. See our Kidepo National Park guide or the official Uganda Wildlife Authority Kidepo page.

Accommodation options:

  • Luxury: Apoka Safari Lodge, overlooking the Narus Valley
  • Mid-range: Kidepo Savannah Lodge, on the edge of the park

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6: Full Day in Kidepo, Narus and Kidepo Valleys

Morning and afternoon game drives in the Narus Valley, where lions, buffalo, elephants, Jackson's hartebeest and Rothschild's giraffes gather around the remaining water. Kidepo is also home to animals found nowhere else in Uganda, such as cheetahs, striped hyenas, bat-eared foxes and ostriches.

The wide plains of Kidepo are ringed by the mountains of the Uganda and South Sudan border.

With a ranger, you can also drive north to the Kidepo Valley to see its sand river, borassus palms and the Kanangorok hot springs near the South Sudan border. Few days on any off the beaten track Uganda safari feel as remote.

Kidepo is also changing. In March 2026 the Uganda Wildlife Authority began returning rhinos to the park, starting with two southern white rhinos from Ziwa. They live in a secure sanctuary and are not yet open to visitors.

Accommodation options:

  • Luxury: Apoka Safari Lodge
  • Mid-range: Kidepo Savannah Lodge

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 7: The Ik People of Mount Morungole

Today is the most unusual day of your 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari. You drive to the foot of Mount Morungole and hike up with a local guide to the villages of the Ik, one of Uganda's smallest tribes, who once lived inside what is now the park.

The climb is steep and takes 2 to 3 hours each way, so it suits travellers with a good level of fitness. Your reward is a warm welcome, sweeping views over Kidepo and a rare chance to learn how the Ik live today.

Prefer a gentler day? Swap the hike for a Karamojong manyatta visit and another long game drive.

Day 8: Kidepo to Gulu via Fort Patiko

Leave Kidepo after an early game drive and head west through Kitgum into Acholi country. In the afternoon, stop at Fort Patiko, the hilltop fort built by the explorer Samuel Baker in the 1870s, with its rock outcrops and quiet views over the plains.

Continue to Gulu for the night. The drive takes about 6 hours, broken by stops along the way, and gives you a feel for everyday life in northern Uganda, a region that few safaris ever reach.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Bomah Hotel or Acholi Inn, Gulu

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 9: Gulu to Budongo Forest

After breakfast, drive south across the Nile at Karuma towards the Budongo Forest, Uganda's largest natural forest, on the southern edge of Murchison Falls National Park. The drive takes about 4 hours.

Budongo is home to some 600 chimpanzees, yet sees far fewer visitors than Kibale, making it ideal for an off the beaten track Uganda safari.

In the afternoon, take a guided nature walk along the forest trails at Kaniyo Pabidi, home to giant mahogany trees, hornbills and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Learn more in our Budongo Forest guide.

Accommodation options:

  • Mid-range: Budongo Eco Lodge, inside the forest at Kaniyo Pabidi

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 10: Budongo Chimpanzee Trekking, then on to Fort Portal

Set off early for chimpanzee trekking in Kaniyo Pabidi. Groups are small and the forest is quiet, so your hour with the chimps feels personal. It is one of the best kept secrets of Uganda's primate world.

After lunch, drive south via Hoima to Fort Portal, about 5 to 6 hours, arriving in the evening at your lodge among the crater lakes. Read more about chimpanzees in Uganda.

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 11: Semuliki National Park and the Sempaya Hot Springs

Drive over the Rwenzori foothills to Semuliki National Park, a lowland rainforest that is an eastern extension of the Congo Basin. Walk to the Sempaya hot springs, where the female spring boils so hot that your guide can cook eggs in it.

On this off the beaten track Uganda safari, a boardwalk leads you through the forest to the steaming Sempaya hot springs.

Semuliki is a paradise for birders, with species found nowhere else in East Africa, and you may spot red-tailed and de Brazza's monkeys. Return to Fort Portal in the late afternoon. See our Semuliki National Park guide and the official park page.

Accommodation options:

  • Luxury: Kyaninga Lodge
  • Mid-range: Crater Safari Lodge

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 12: Rwenzori Foothills Hike and the Crater Lakes

In the morning, drive to the edge of Rwenzori Mountains National Park for a guided day hike into the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon. The trail climbs through farmland into montane forest, with chances of the Rwenzori turaco and L'Hoest's monkeys.

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 13: Fort Portal to Entebbe

After a slow breakfast, drive back to Entebbe through Mubende and Kampala, about 6 hours. If you would rather fly, we can book a scheduled flight from Kasese to Entebbe instead, which takes about an hour. Either way, your off the beaten track Uganda safari loops back to where it began.

Accommodation options:

  • Luxury: Hotel No.5
  • Mid-range: 2 Friends Beach Hotel

Meal plan: breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 14: Departure from Entebbe

Your 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari ends today. Depending on your flight time, you can relax at the hotel or take an optional morning canoe trip through Mabamba Swamp to look for the shoebill.

Best Time for a 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari

The best time for this 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari is the dry season, from December to February and from June to September. Roads in Karamoja and northern Uganda are easier, game gathers around water in Kidepo, and forest trails are drier for chimpanzee trekking.

From March to May and in October and November, heavy rain can make the roads to Kidepo slow, so we may adjust the route or suggest a flight into Kidepo. The forests are green and quiet, birding is at its best, and an off the beaten track Uganda safari feels even more private.

Make Your 14-Day Off the Beaten Track Uganda Safari Your Own

Add gorilla trekking in Bwindi after Fort Portal, fly into Kidepo to save driving time, or finish on a beach in Zanzibar. Tell us what you enjoy and we will shape the route around you.
