Lakes, Forests and Waterfalls: Natural Hidden Gems in Uganda
These natural hidden gems in Uganda sit close to the main safari routes, yet most tours drive straight past them.
1. Lake Mutanda
Lake Mutanda lies in the far south-west near Kisoro, at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. On a clear evening the volcano peaks are reflected in the water, one of the finest views in Africa.
Paddle a dugout canoe between its islands, take a sundowner boat cruise or simply relax on a lodge deck. It pairs perfectly with gorilla trekking in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi or in Mgahinga, and it is one of the most peaceful hidden gems in Uganda.
2. Mabira Forest

Mabira Forest takes its name from the Luganda word amabira, meaning a big forest. It lines the Kampala to Jinja highway, yet most travellers never stop.
Zipline through the canopy, follow forest trails to look for red-tailed monkeys and grey-cheeked mangabeys, or go mountain biking. Griffin Falls Camp offers a night in the forest. It is one of the easiest hidden gems in Uganda to add to a Jinja trip.
3. Ssezibwa Falls
Ssezibwa Falls lies just off the Jinja road near Mukono, less than an hour from Kampala. Buganda legend says the river was born as twins to a local woman, which makes this a sacred site where people still come to pray and give thanks.
A short guided walk leads past the falls, shrines and rich birdlife. Combine it with Mabira Forest and the source of the Nile for a perfect day of hidden gems in Uganda.
4. Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary
Next to Kibale Forest, the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a papyrus swamp protected by the local community. A three-hour walk along boardwalks finds red colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys and birds such as the great blue turaco.
Your entry fee pays for village schools and health projects, so it is one of the hidden gems in Uganda that does real good. It is the perfect afternoon after your chimp trek.
5. Kalinzu Forest

Kalinzu Forest Reserve borders Queen Elizabeth National Park and protects about 137 square kilometres of rainforest. It is home to a few hundred chimpanzees, with one community habituated for visitors.
Permits cost much less than in Kibale and the forest is quieter, which makes Kalinzu one of the best-value hidden gems in Uganda and a smart choice for budget safaris. Read more about chimpanzees in Uganda.
6. Kitagata Hot Springs
In Sheema District, on the road between Mbarara and Queen Elizabeth, two natural hot springs bubble out of the ground. Local people bathe here, believing the warm, mineral-rich water heals aches and skin conditions.
It is a short, unusual stop where you will meet Ugandans rather than other tourists, a real local hidden gem. For a wilder geothermal site, see the Sempaya hot springs.
7. Rwenzori Foothills
You do not need to climb Margherita Peak to enjoy the Rwenzori Mountains. Day walks and short treks on the lower slopes pass waterfalls, villages and forest full of birds and monkeys.
Look out for the three-horned chameleon, a Rwenzori speciality. Community-run trails near Kasese make this one of the most rewarding hidden gems in Uganda for walkers.

Culture and History: Lesser-Known Uganda Tourist Destinations
Uganda's kingdoms, faiths and ancient peoples have left fascinating sites that few safari itineraries include.
8. Biharwe Eclipse Monument

On a hill just outside Mbarara stands a monument to a solar eclipse that struck around 1520. According to Ankole tradition, the sudden darkness so frightened an invading Bunyoro king that he fled, leaving behind the cattle he had seized.
A small museum tells the story, and the hilltop gives wide views over Ankole cattle country. It is on the main road west, so it is one of the easiest hidden gems in Uganda to visit.
9. Igongo Cultural Centre

Across the road from Biharwe, the Igongo Cultural Centre has one of Uganda's best museums of western Ugandan culture. Learn about the famous long-horned Ankole cattle, royal regalia and traditional homes.
Stay for lunch, as the restaurant serves local dishes such as millet bread and smoked meat. Most of our south-western safaris stop at this cultural hidden gem on the way to or from the gorillas.
10. Amabere Caves
Near Fort Portal, the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves are famous for limestone formations that drip milky water. Legend links them to Nyina Mwiru, a princess of the ancient Batembuzi dynasty.
A small waterfall, a short climb to Nyakasura Hill with views over three crater lakes and a giant footprint in the rock complete the visit. See our Fort Portal travel guide for more nearby.
11. Uganda Martyrs Shrine, Namugongo
Namugongo, on the edge of Kampala, honours the Christian converts who were killed on the orders of the Buganda king between 1885 and 1887. The shrine's striking basilica is built in the shape of a traditional hut.
Every 3 June, more than a million pilgrims gather here, many walking for weeks from across East Africa. Outside the festival it is a calm, moving place, and one of the most meaningful hidden gems in Uganda.
12. Mparo Tombs of Omukama Kabalega

Just outside Hoima lies the tomb of Omukama Kabalega, the Bunyoro king who resisted British rule for years before being exiled to the Seychelles in 1899. Inside, his spears, bowls and throne are displayed above his grave.
Mparo is a little-known hidden gem on the way to Murchison Falls, so it is easy to add to a northern safari.
13. Nyero Rock Paintings
In Kumi District in eastern Uganda, red and white geometric paintings cover the walls of three granite rock shelters. They are among the most important rock art sites in East Africa and are thought to be centuries old.
Nyero fits well with a trip to Sipi Falls or Mount Elgon, and as one of the least-visited hidden gems in Uganda, you will almost certainly have it to yourself.
14. Kagulu Rock
Kagulu Rock rises sharply from the plains of Buyende District in Busoga. Steps cut into the rock lead to the summit, where views stretch over Lake Kyoga and the surrounding countryside.
The rock is linked to the history of the Basoga people, who say their ancestors first settled here. It is a short, steep climb and a true off-the-beaten-path hidden gem in Uganda.
15. Karamoja

The Karamoja region in north-eastern Uganda is home to the Karamojong, cattle-keeping people who still live in traditional manyattas. Visits include dances, homestead tours and walks with local guides.
The region's rugged mountains offer hikes on Mount Moroto, and it is the gateway to Kidepo Valley National Park. Few hidden gems in Uganda feel as remote or as authentic.

Arriving or leaving through Entebbe? These two stops make good use of a spare morning or afternoon.
16. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

A boat ride across Lake Victoria takes you to Ngamba Island, a sanctuary for chimpanzees rescued from the pet and bushmeat trade. You watch them at feeding time from a raised platform.
For a deeper experience, stay overnight in the island's tented camp or join a caregiver programme to help prepare food and observe the chimps.
17. Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre

Once known as Entebbe Zoo, the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre cares for rescued animals in large natural enclosures on the shore of Lake Victoria. Behind-the-scenes tours let you help feed chimps, giraffes and other animals.
You can even sleep in bandas on site and wake to the sound of lions and monkeys. It is ideal for families, and one of the best hidden gems in Uganda for children. Find more ideas in our list of things to do in Entebbe.
