Overland Uganda Safari: Border Pickup Tours from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and DRC

September 30, 2026

An overland Uganda safari lets you enter Uganda by road from any neighbouring country, meet your driver guide at the border, and begin your adventure within minutes of crossing. No domestic flights, no confusing bus connections and no wasted days.

At Tulambule Uganda Safaris, we pick up guests at Uganda's main border posts with Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. We run your full safari, then drop you back at the border, at a different border, or at Entebbe International Airport for your flight home.

This guide covers how it works, which border suits which safari, the documents you need, the top experiences near each entry point, and sample itineraries. It is written for independent travellers, pilgrims, families, overland adventurers and tour operators across East Africa who want a reliable ground partner in Uganda.

How Our Overland Uganda Safari Works

Our border pickup packages are simple and built around your route.

Overland Uganda Safari: Border Pickup Tours from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and DRC

1. You travel to the border. Arrive by your own car, a bus, a partner operator's vehicle or a transfer from your hotel in the neighbouring country.

2. We meet you on the Uganda side. Your Tulambule driver guide waits at the immigration exit with a name board and loads your luggage into a comfortable 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof.

3. Your safari begins. We handle accommodation, park fees, permits, activity bookings, meals as per your package and bottled water on the road.

4. We drop you where you need to be. On your final day, choose any of these endings:

Drop-off at Entebbe International Airport for your flight out.
Return to the same border you entered from.
Exit through a different border, for example entering from Kenya and leaving into Rwanda.
Drop-off at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe if you are staying longer.

This flexibility is what makes an overland Uganda safari so practical. You never have to backtrack unless you want to.

Why Choose an Overland Uganda Safari?

Save on flights. Travellers already in Nairobi, Kisumu, Kigali, Mwanza, Bukoba or Juba can reach Uganda by road for a fraction of the cost of flying.

See the real Uganda. Road travel reveals villages, tea estates, crater lakes, banana plantations and roadside markets. The journey becomes part of the adventure.

Start close to the action. Several borders sit right next to Uganda's top attractions. Cyanika is minutes from Mgahinga, Katuna is about two to three hours from Bwindi, and Busia is under three hours from the Source of the Nile.

Combine East Africa easily. An overland Uganda safari fits neatly into a multi-country trip. See our combined East African safaris, tours and holidays for ideas.

Ideal for groups. Church groups, schools, families, corporate teams and overland travellers find road travel easier to coordinate and more affordable.

Uganda Border Crossings by Country: Where We Pick You Up

Uganda shares borders with five countries. Below is a practical guide to each crossing, what lies nearby, and the best first stop on your overland Uganda safari.

From Kenya: Busia, Malaba and Mount Elgon Crossings

Kenya is the most common starting point for road travellers into Uganda. Both Busia and Malaba operate as One Stop Border Posts, so exit and entry formalities happen in one facility.

Busia border suits travellers from Kisumu, Siaya and southern Western Kenya. The road on the Uganda side leads through Busia town towards Iganga and Jinja, about two and a half to three hours away.

Malaba border suits travellers from Eldoret, Bungoma or Nairobi via the northern corridor. It connects through Tororo to Jinja and to Mbale.

Lwakhakha and Suam are smaller crossings near Mount Elgon. They suit hikers heading to Sipi Falls or the mountain itself, though roads can be rough in the rainy season.

Tip for groups: Malaba carries very heavy cargo traffic. For tourist buses and minivans, Busia can sometimes be quicker, although this varies by day. We advise on the best crossing for your date.

Best first stops: the Source of the Nile in Jinja, Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon National Park, the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine and Kampala.

From Tanzania: Mutukula and Murongo Crossings

Mutukula border is the main road crossing between Tanzania and Uganda, linking Bukoba in Tanzania's Kagera Region to Masaka in Uganda. It operates as a One Stop Border Post.

From Mutukula, it is about one and a half hours to Masaka and roughly four hours to Kampala. This makes it a smart entry point for travellers coming from Mwanza, Bukoba or northern Tanzania safaris.

Murongo and Kikagati is a smaller crossing further west, linking Kagera to Isingiro and Mbarara. It can be a shorter route towards Lake Mburo and the southwest. Ask us about its current status before planning around it.

Best first stops: Lake Mburo National Park for zebras, impalas, boat rides and walking safaris, then Bwindi for gorillas, or east to the Equator at Kayabwe, Mabamba Swamp for the shoebill and Entebbe.

From Rwanda: Katuna, Cyanika and Mirama Hills Crossings

Rwanda to Uganda is one of the most popular overland routes in the region, largely because of the gorillas.

Katuna (Gatuna) border is the main crossing from Kigali, about two hours' drive from the Rwandan capital. On the Uganda side, it is a short drive to Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi, and about two to three hours to Bwindi's southern trekking sectors.

Cyanika border links Musanze in Rwanda to Kisoro in Uganda. It is the closest crossing to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi. Guests finishing Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda can be in Uganda within an hour.

Mirama Hills (Kagitumba) border sits near the point where Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania meet, about 30 km from Ntungamo. It suits travellers coming from Akagera National Park or eastern Rwanda and is well placed for Lake Mburo.

Best first stops: Lake Bunyonyi, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Lake Mburo.

Many travellers fly into Kigali for Uganda gorilla trekking because the drive to Bwindi is shorter than from Entebbe. See our 2-day gorilla tour Uganda via Kigali and best Uganda gorilla safaris.

From South Sudan: Nimule and Elegu Crossing

Nimule (South Sudan) and Elegu (Uganda) form the main road crossing between the two countries and operate as a One Stop Border Post, linking Juba to northern Uganda.

From Elegu, it is roughly two hours to Gulu, and from there about three hours to Murchison Falls National Park. Northern Uganda makes an excellent first stop for travellers and residents coming from Juba.

Oraba border near Koboko is a smaller crossing into the West Nile region.

Best first stops: Murchison Falls National Park, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way to Kampala, and Kidepo Valley National Park for a remote wilderness experience.

Safety note: We meet guests on the Ugandan side at Elegu. Please check the latest security guidance for the road between Juba and Nimule before travelling.

From the Democratic Republic of Congo: Bunagana, Mpondwe and Northern Crossings

Uganda and the DRC share a long border with several crossings, including Bunagana near Kisoro, Mpondwe near Kasese, Ishasha in the south of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Goli and Vurra in the West Nile region.

In normal times, Mpondwe is only minutes from Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Rwenzori Mountains, while Bunagana is close to Mgahinga and Bwindi.

Important update: Crossings between the DRC and Uganda are subject to health and security restrictions that change from time to time. At the time of writing, Uganda has restricted cross-border movement with the DRC in response to the Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, and areas on the Congolese side near Bunagana have been affected by conflict.

If you plan to enter Uganda from the DRC, please contact us before making any arrangements. We will advise on the current situation and the safest alternative, which is often entering through Rwanda.

Top Experiences Near Uganda's Eastern Borders: Jinja, Namugongo and Kampala

Travellers entering from Kenya, and many coming up from Tanzania, often begin with Uganda's "big three" near the capital: the Source of the Nile, the Uganda Martyrs Shrine and a Kampala city tour.

The Source of the Nile in Jinja

Jinja is where the world's longest river begins its 6,650 km journey to the Mediterranean. For many of our guests from Kenya, this is the highlight of the whole trip.

Boat ride to the Source of the Nile. A short trip takes you to the spot where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria. You will often see kingfishers, cormorants and fish eagles along the way.

Speke Monument and Gandhi Memorial. Speke identified this point as the Nile's source in 1862. Nearby, a memorial marks where some of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered into the river.

Adventure on the Nile. White water rafting, kayaking, quad biking and horseback rides make Jinja one of Africa's adventure capitals, with gentler options for families.

Sunset cruise. A relaxed evening on the river with drinks and birdlife, perfect for couples and groups.

Mabira Forest stop. Between Jinja and Kampala, Mabira offers forest walks, Griffin Falls and ziplining through the canopy. We plan it as a stop on the drive, so no extra day is needed.

The Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo

Namugongo lies about 15 km northeast of central Kampala, conveniently on the route from Jinja. For church groups and pilgrims, it is the heart of the journey.

Between 1885 and 1887, young Christian converts at the court of Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda were executed for refusing to renounce their faith. The largest group was burned at Namugongo on 3 June 1886.

In total, 45 martyrs are remembered: 22 Catholics and 23 Anglicans. The 22 Catholic martyrs, led by Saint Charles Lwanga, were canonised by Pope Paul VI in 1964.

The Catholic Basilica of the Uganda Martyrs is designed after a traditional African hut and has welcomed three popes: Paul VI, John Paul II and Francis. Its grounds include the peaceful Martyrs' Lake.

The Anglican Uganda Martyrs Shrine and Museum sits nearby and tells the martyrs' story through exhibits at the site where many were burned.

Uganda Martyrs Day, 3 June. Every year, Namugongo hosts one of Africa's largest religious gatherings, with pilgrims arriving from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, the DRC and beyond, many on foot. Book early, because Kampala hotels fill up in the last week of May. We run pilgrimage packages with border pickup, accommodation and guided shrine visits.

Kampala City Tour

Kampala is a lively, friendly city spread across several hills. A guided city tour shows you its history, culture and faith in a single day.

Kasubi Tombs: the UNESCO World Heritage burial place of Buganda kings, with remarkable traditional architecture.
Uganda National Mosque: on Old Kampala Hill, with one of the best panoramic views of the city from its minaret.
Namirembe and Rubaga Cathedrals: the main Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, closely tied to Uganda's Christian history.
The Kabaka's Palace at Mengo: learn about the Buganda Kingdom and see the underground chambers from the Idi Amin era.
Uganda Museum: East Africa's oldest museum, covering culture, music, archaeology and natural history.
Bahá'í House of Worship: Africa's only Bahá'í temple, set in quiet gardens on Kikaya Hill.
Craft markets and Owino Market: baskets, bark cloth and carvings for souvenirs, plus the buzz of a local market.
Ndere Cultural Centre: an evening of traditional music and dance from across Uganda, a favourite with groups.

Travel Documents for an Overland Uganda Safari

Getting your documents right is the key to a smooth crossing. Requirements depend on your nationality.

East African citizens

Citizens of Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan do not need a visa to enter Uganda. Kenyan and Rwandan citizens can travel with a national ID instead of a passport, using the free Interstate Pass issued at the border.

We still recommend carrying your passport if you have one, because some hotels and mobile networks ask for it, especially when registering a SIM card. Congolese citizens should check visa requirements before travel.

International visitors

Most non-East African visitors need a visa for Uganda. You have two main options, both applied for on the official Uganda e-visa portal:

Uganda single entry tourist visa: US$50, applied for online before you travel.

East Africa Tourist Visa: US$100, covering Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda on one visa, valid for 90 days with multiple entries between the three. You must apply through the country you will enter first, so if you start in Kenya, apply via Kenya's eTA and visa portal, and if you start in Rwanda, via Rwanda's Directorate General of Immigration.

Tanzania, South Sudan and the DRC are not part of the East Africa Tourist Visa, so plan separate entry for those countries. Always use official portals and avoid third-party sites that add high service charges.

Yellow fever and health

A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda, so keep it with your passport or ID. For vaccines and health advice, check the CDC's Uganda travel health page and read our Uganda safety update.

Money and SIM cards

Uganda uses the Uganda shilling (UGX), and US dollars are widely accepted for tourism services. Dollar notes should be newer series and in good condition. You can exchange Kenyan shillings, Tanzanian shillings and Rwandan francs at licensed forex bureaus at the main borders and in major towns.

A local MTN or Airtel SIM card is cheap and useful, and mobile money is widely used across the country.

Sample Overland Uganda Safari Itineraries

Every trip we run is tailored to your dates, budget and interests. These samples show how different borders connect to Uganda's highlights. Prices depend on group size, season and accommodation level, and we send a clear quote for every request.

Park and permit fees are set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. At the time of writing, gorilla permits cost US$800 and Kibale chimpanzee permits US$250 per person for foreign non-residents, with lower rates for East African citizens.

Practical Tips for Your Overland Uganda Safari

Cross in the morning. Borders are usually quicker early in the day, and you reach your first stop in daylight.

Book permits early. Gorilla permits sell out months ahead in the peak seasons of June to September and December to February.

Keep documents together. Have your passport or ID, yellow fever certificate and visa approval printed and easy to reach.

Confirm your exact border. Some towns have more than one crossing nearby, so confirming the exact post avoids delays.

Dress respectfully at religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees at Namugongo, the cathedrals and the National Mosque.

Pack for different climates. The highlands around Bwindi and Kisoro are cold at night, while Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth and Jinja are warm.

Plan your final day well. If you are flying out, choose an evening flight or stay in Entebbe the night before.

For general destination inspiration, visit the Uganda Tourism Board's official site, Visit Uganda.
