1. Why Should I Choose Uganda for a Budget Safari?
Uganda gives you more variety for less money than Kenya or Tanzania, which is why budget Uganda safaris offer such good value. In one trip you can combine savannah game drives, boat cruises and rainforest primate treks, and the country is compact enough to explore by road, which saves on domestic flights.
Gorilla trekking is the biggest single cost, but at US$800 per permit, Uganda costs just over half of Rwanda's US$1,500. If gorillas are outside your budget, chimpanzee tracking costs US$100 in most forests, or US$250 in Kibale Forest.
2. What Is Included in Budget Uganda Safaris?
Most budget Uganda safaris include transport in a 4x4 safari vehicle, a driver-guide, park entry fees, accommodation and meals. Always get the inclusions in writing before you book.
Items usually not included are drinks, laundry, optional activities and tips. Check whether airport transfers are covered, as this varies between packages.
3. What Does a Typical Day on Safari Look Like?
On game-viewing days, you set off at sunrise when predators are most active, rest during the midday heat, then head out again for an afternoon drive or boat cruise. Some days you'll take a packed lunch to explore further from your lodge.
Forest days are different. You leave after breakfast to track gorillas or chimpanzees, return for a late lunch, and spend the afternoon relaxing. Some days are spent driving between parks, often with interesting stops along the way.
4. What Accommodation Can I Expect?
Budget Uganda safaris use clean, comfortable lodges, permanent safari tents and campsites. Many budget lodges sit just outside the park gates, usually within a 30-minute drive.
Permanent safari tents have proper beds and private bathrooms, giving you a real safari feel at a lower price. Campsites are the cheapest option and are often set inside the parks in beautiful wildlife areas.
5. How Much Do Budget Uganda Safaris Cost?

6. When Is the Best Time for Budget Uganda Safaris?
The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are the best time for wildlife viewing and primate trekking. For the lowest prices, travel in April, May or November. Under the Uganda Wildlife Authority's low-season rates, gorilla permits drop to US$600 and Kibale chimpanzee permits to US$200, and many lodges also offer discounts.
