1. Mabamba Swamp — 1.5 Hours | Half-Day or Full-Day Trip

Drive: Approximately 50 kilometres west of Kampala via Entebbe Road — about 1.5 hours depending on traffic.

Mabamba is the easiest wildlife excursion from Kampala and requires no overnight stay. Most travellers leave Kampala by 6.00 am, arrive at the swamp launch site by 7.30 am, complete a 2-hour morning canoe trip, and are back in the city by lunchtime.

It is the ideal add-on for travellers arriving in Uganda a day early or departing a day late. No park fees are required — only a community guide fee payable at the launch site.

Best combined with: An Entebbe stopover, or as a standalone half-day trip before joining a longer western Uganda safari circuit.

Best time to visit: Year-round, but early morning dry season visits (June to September, December to February) give the clearest sightings.

2. Jinja and the Source of the Nile — 2 Hours | 1 to 2 Days

Drive: Approximately 80 kilometres east of Kampala via the Kampala-Jinja Highway — about 1.5 to 2 hours by road.

Jinja is Uganda's adventure capital and one of the most accessible day trips from Kampala. The Source of the Nile — where the White Nile bursts from Lake Victoria — is the headline attraction, with entry costing approximately USD 10 per adult.

Beyond the source, Jinja offers white-water rafting on the Nile, bungee jumping, kayaking, quad biking, and sunset boat cruises. The Kampala-Jinja highway is one of Uganda's best-maintained roads, making this an easy self-drive or guided day trip.

Best combined with: A Mabamba Swamp morning on the way out of Kampala, or a 2-night Jinja stay for adrenaline activities before heading deeper into Uganda's safari circuit.

Best time to visit: Year-round. Avoid travelling on Friday evenings when Kampala-Jinja traffic is heaviest.

3. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary — 3 Hours | Half-Day Stop or Overnight

Drive: Approximately 176 kilometres north of Kampala via the Kampala-Gulu Highway — about 3 hours by road.

Ziwa is Uganda's only white rhino sanctuary and works perfectly as a half-day stopover on the way to Murchison Falls National Park. Most travellers leave Kampala by 7.00 am, complete a 1.5 to 2-hour guided rhino tracking walk at Ziwa, have lunch at the sanctuary, and continue to Murchison in the afternoon.

No gorilla or game drive permits are needed — a simple tracking fee applies payable at the gate. An overnight option is also available for travellers who want to take their time.

Best combined with: Murchison Falls National Park — almost all northern circuit safaris include Ziwa as a natural midway stop from Kampala.

Best time to visit: Year-round. Rhinos are tracked on foot regardless of season.

4. Lake Mburo National Park — 4 Hours | 1 to 2 Nights

Drive: Approximately 230 kilometres southwest of Kampala via the Masaka-Mbarara Highway — about 4 hours by road.

Lake Mburo is Uganda's most accessible safari park from Kampala and the easiest option for a weekend game drive. Leaving Kampala on a Friday evening gets you to the park by 8.00 pm, with a full Saturday of game drives and a Sunday morning boat safari getting you back in Kampala by evening.

The park entry fee for foreign non-residents is approximately USD 40 per person per day. Night game drives — available exclusively at Lake Mburo — are a genuinely rare experience that most travellers do not expect to find so close to the capital.

Best combined with: A stop at the Uganda Equator monument in Kayabwe en route, and optionally Bwindi Impenetrable Forest further southwest for a longer western circuit.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February for dry season game drives. The Masaka-Mbarara road is excellent year-round.

5. Murchison Falls National Park — 5 to 6 Hours | 2 to 4 Nights

Drive: Approximately 305 kilometres north of Kampala via the Gulu Highway — about 5 to 6 hours by road.

Murchison Falls requires a minimum 2-night stay to do it justice — one night on each bank of the Nile is ideal. Day one from Kampala: depart by 6.00 am, stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, arrive at Murchison by 4.00 pm for a sunset Nile cruise.

Day two: full-day northern savannah game drive. Day three: optional Budongo Forest chimp trek, then drive back to Kampala arriving by 8.00 pm. Park entry for foreign non-residents costs approximately USD 40 per person per day. The northern game drive circuit and the Nile boat cruise are the two unmissable activities — plan time for both.

Best combined with: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary (en route) and Budongo Forest Reserve chimpanzee trekking (within the park).  Aerolink also operates charter flights from Entebbe to Murchison for travellers short on time.

Best time to visit: December to February and June to September for dry season game drives. The northern bank road is best avoided in heavy rain.

6. Kibale Forest National Park — 5 to 6 Hours | 1 to 2 Nights

Drive: Approximately 350 kilometres west of Kampala via Fort Portal — about 5 to 6 hours by road.

Kibale chimpanzee trekking permits must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Morning treks depart at 8.00 am and afternoon treks at 2.00 pm — you must be at the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre 30 minutes before your slot.

A typical Kampala-Kibale itinerary: depart Kampala by 6.00 am, arrive Fort Portal by noon, lunch, check in, then take the afternoon trek. Day two: morning trek, then drive on to Queen Elizabeth National Park or return to Kampala. A standard permit costs USD 250 per person; the Habituation Experience at USD 300 allows up to 4 hours with the chimps and must be booked separately.

Best combined with: Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south for a complete western Uganda circuit, or the Fort Portal crater lakes for a relaxed overnight extension.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February. The forest is accessible year-round but trails are muddier during the rains.

7. Queen Elizabeth National Park — 6 to 7 Hours | 2 to 3 Nights

Drive: Approximately 400 to 460 kilometres southwest of Kampala via Mbarara — about 6 to 7 hours by road.

Queen Elizabeth requires a minimum 2-night stay to cover the key activities properly. An ideal itinerary from Kampala: depart by 5.30 am, arrive by early afternoon, afternoon game drive on the Kasenyi plains.

Day two: morning boat safari on the Kazinga Channel, afternoon Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee track. Day three: early morning Ishasha tree-climbing lions sector, then drive back to Kampala. Park entry for foreign non-residents costs approximately USD 40 per person per day. The Kazinga Channel boat safari runs twice daily and should be booked through your lodge in advance.

Best combined with: Kibale Forest to the north for a 5 to 7 day western circuit, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest via the Ishasha sector for a gorilla and savannah combination. Aerolink operates charter flights to Kasese and Mweya airstrips.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February for the clearest game drives and best road conditions into Ishasha.

8. Lake Bunyonyi — 7 to 8 Hours | 1 to 3 Nights

Drive: Approximately 440 kilometres southwest of Kampala via Mbarara and Kabale — about 7 to 8 hours by road.

Lake Bunyonyi is Africa's second deepest lake and one of Uganda's most beautiful destinations, sitting at nearly 2,000 metres above sea level in the Kigezi highlands. It is not a wildlife park — it is a pure relaxation and scenery destination with 29 islands, terraced hillsides, and cool highland air.

Most travellers include Lake Bunyonyi as a rest stop between Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and the drive back to Kampala, breaking the long return journey with 1 to 2 nights on the lake. Activities include canoeing between islands, swimming (one of very few lakes in Uganda safe for swimming), village walks, and Batwa community cultural visits.

Best combined with: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — Lake Bunyonyi sits only 2 hours from Bwindi and is the perfect way to decompress after an intense gorilla trek before the long drive back to Kampala.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February for dry weather. The highland climate is cool year-round — bring a light jacket.

9. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — 8 to 10 Hours | 2 to 3 Nights

Drive: Approximately 500 kilometres southwest of Kampala — about 8 to 10 hours by road, or 1 to 2 hours by charter flight from Entebbe.

Bwindi is the longest drive on this list and requires careful planning. Depart Kampala no later than 5.00 am to arrive at your chosen sector before dark. Breaking the drive with a Lake Mburo overnight on day one is strongly recommended — it turns a punishing 10-hour drive into two comfortable 5-hour stages.

Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 800 per person for foreign non-residents and must be booked well in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Treks depart at 8.00 am sharp from the relevant sector headquarters — lateness forfeits your permit with no refund.

Best combined with: Lake Mburo National Park on the drive down, Lake Bunyonyi for post-trek relaxation, and Queen Elizabeth or Kibale Forest for a full western Uganda circuit.  Aerolink flies to Kihihi and Kisoro airstrips for travellers who prefer to fly.

Best time to visit: June to September and December to February. Gorilla trekking runs year-round but dry season trails are significantly easier to navigate.

10. Kidepo Valley National Park — 10 to 12 Hours | 3 to 5 Nights

Drive: Approximately 700 kilometres northeast of Kampala — about 10 to 12 hours by road, or 1 hour by charter flight from Entebbe.

Kidepo is the most remote destination on this list and the one that demands the most planning. Driving from Kampala is possible but requires two full days of travel each way — most serious travellers fly. Charter flights from Entebbe to Kidepo airstrip take approximately 1 hour and are operated by Aerolink Uganda.

A minimum 3-night stay is strongly recommended given the travel time involved; 5 nights gives a genuinely immersive experience. Park entry for foreign non-residents costs approximately USD 40 per person per day. Because Kidepo has very limited accommodation, lodges must be booked months in advance during peak season.

Best combined with: Murchison Falls National Park on a northern Uganda fly-in circuit — fly Entebbe to Kidepo, then Kidepo to Murchison, then road transfer back to Kampala via Ziwa.

Best time to visit: December to April (dry season in the northeast) for the best game concentrations in the Narus Valley. June to August is also good but can bring short rains.
