A 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda safari is the shortest way to see mountain gorillas if you start in Entebbe or Kampala. It gives you one full day in the forest and one magical hour with a gorilla family, with a night near the park on either side of your trek.
This guide answers the question most travelers ask us: is 3 days enough? It compares the three ways to do it (by road, by air or from Kigali), explains costs and permits, and shows what each day looks like. Then you can choose the trip that suits your time and budget.
We have run gorilla safaris from our Kampala office since 2014, so every itinerary below is one we operate ourselves. If you want more background first, start with our guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda.

The short answer: yes, 3 days is enough to trek gorillas in Uganda. By road from Entebbe, expect two long driving days of 8 to 10 hours. To cut the driving, fly to Bwindi (about 1 hour 45 minutes) or start in Kigali (about 4 to 5 hours by road).
Is 3 Days Enough for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?
Yes. Uganda's mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, in the far south-west. Both are 8 to 10 hours by road from Entebbe or Kampala, so you need one day to get there, one day to trek and one day to return.

The catch is the driving. On a road trip, two of your three days are mostly spent in the vehicle. It is a scenic drive, through the Equator, banana plantations and the green hills of Kigezi, but it is long. That is why many travelers either fly or start their 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda safari from Kigali in Rwanda instead.
3 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda: Three Ways to Do It
Here is how the three ways to do a 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trip compare.
| By road from Entebbe or Kampala | Fly-in from Entebbe | By road from Kigali | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel each way | 8 to 10 hours | About 1 hour 45 minutes, plus a short transfer | About 4 to 5 hours |
| Best for | Budget travelers who enjoy the countryside | Travelers short on time | Travelers flying into Kigali |
| Gorilla permit | US$800 | US$800 | US$800 (Rwanda charges US$1,500) |
| Cost level | Lowest | Highest | Low to mid |
Option 1: 3 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda by Road from Entebbe
This is the classic road trip, and the best value way to see gorillas from Uganda's airport. You travel in a private 4x4 safari vehicle with your own driver-guide, and stay at a lodge near the park on both nights. See the full 3 day Uganda gorilla trekking tour for lodge options.
- Day 1, Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi: leave early, around 6:00 to 7:30 AM. Stop at the Kayabwe Equator monument for photos and at Igongo Cultural Centre for lunch, arriving at your lodge in the evening.
- Day 2, gorilla trekking: breakfast at 6:00 AM, ranger briefing at the park office around 7:30 AM, then trek. After your hour with the gorillas, return to the lodge. In the evening you can visit the Batwa, the forest's original people, on the Batwa cultural experience.
- Day 3, back to Entebbe or Kampala: drive back with a lunch stop and a visit to the Mpambire drum makers, arriving in the evening for your hotel or flight.

Option 2: 3 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda by Air
If you don't want to spend two days on the road, fly. Scheduled light aircraft fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airstrip to Kihihi, close to Bwindi, in about 1 hour 45 minutes. It costs more, but it turns your 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trip into a relaxed one. Our 3 days fly-in gorilla safari has the details.
- Day 1: fly from Entebbe to Kihihi, then a short road transfer of about 90 minutes to your lodge. Spend the afternoon on a community walk or relaxing.
- Day 2: gorilla trekking in Bwindi, then the rest of the day at leisure.
- Day 3: breakfast, transfer to Kihihi and fly back to Entebbe in time for an onward flight.

Option 3: 3 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda via Kigali
Many travelers now start their Uganda gorilla safari in Kigali, Rwanda. The drive to southern Bwindi takes only about 4 to 5 hours, and you still pay Uganda's US$800 permit instead of Rwanda's US$1,500, a saving of US$700 per person. Compare the two countries in gorilla safaris in Uganda vs Rwanda, or see our 3 days gorilla trek via Kigali.
- Day 1: pick-up at Kigali International Airport or your hotel, then cross into Uganda and drive to Bwindi. Your flight should land by about 1:00 PM to reach the lodge the same day.
- Day 2: morning gorilla trek in Bwindi, with an optional Batwa visit in the afternoon.
- Day 3: drive back to Kigali for your flight, with an optional Kigali city tour if time allows.

How Much Does a 3 Day Gorilla Trekking Uganda Safari Cost?
The gorilla permit is the biggest single cost. It is US$800 per person for foreign non-residents, or US$600 in the low-season months of April, May and November. East African citizens and foreign residents pay less. Our Uganda gorilla trekking permits guide covers every category, and gorilla permit prices compared sets Uganda against Rwanda and Congo.
On top of the permit, the price of a 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda safari depends on four things:
- Transport: a private 4x4 vehicle with driver-guide for 3 days, plus fuel. Flying costs more.
- Accommodation: two nights near the park, from simple budget lodges to luxury forest lodges.
- Group size: the vehicle costs the same for one person or four, so the price per person falls when you travel with others.
- Season: a low-season permit saves US$200 per person.
As a guide, a solo traveler on a private 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda road safari pays from about US$1,900 in budget lodges to US$3,000 or more in luxury ones. Two people sharing pay noticeably less each. Tell us your dates and group size, and we will send you an exact, all-inclusive quote.
What Happens on Gorilla Trekking Day?
Your day starts early. After breakfast, you report to the park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers at around 7:30 AM. Groups of up to eight people are each assigned a habituated gorilla family, and trackers who have been following that family since dawn guide you to it.

The trek can take anywhere from one to six hours, depending on where the gorillas slept and moved. Once you find them, you spend one hour watching them feed, groom and play from about seven meters away. The minimum age is 15. If you'd like longer with the gorillas, read about the four-hour option in our guide to the gorilla habituation experience vs gorilla trekking.
Bwindi has four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. On a 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda road trip from Entebbe, Buhoma is usually the closest. From Kigali, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south are quickest. Our guide to the Bwindi gorilla sectors explains the differences.
How to Prepare for Your Trek
Every 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trip includes one demanding forest walk. Gorilla trekking is moderately to highly demanding, on steep, muddy and slippery trails. You don't need to be an athlete, but some walking practice before your trip helps. Read how hard gorilla trekking is for an honest assessment, and see our advice on gorilla trekking for older or less mobile travelers.

- Waterproof hiking boots with good grip
- Long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and garden gloves for nettles and thorny plants
- A light rain jacket, as the forest can be wet at any time of year
- A small backpack with drinking water and your packed lunch
- A local porter (about US$20), who carries your bag and helps on steep sections

Is 3 Days Too Short? Ways to Extend Your Safari
A 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trip is perfect if you're short on time. But if you can add a day or two, you will see far more for the same long drive. Popular additions are chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park, game drives and a Kazinga Channel boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth National Park, or a relaxing night on Lake Bunyonyi after your trek. Our best Uganda gorilla safaris show the longer options.
Common Questions
Is gorilla trekking safe?
Yes. The gorilla families you visit are fully habituated to people, and armed rangers and experienced guides stay with your group throughout. Read more in is gorilla trekking safe.
Can you see gorillas without trekking?
No. Mountain gorillas live only in the wild, and no zoo in the world keeps them, so trekking into their forest is the only way to see them.
When is the best time for 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trips?
You can trek gorillas all year. The drier months of June to September and December to February have firmer trails and are the most popular, so book early for those dates. The rainy months of March to May and October to November are quieter and greener, and permits cost US$600 in April, May and November.
Is a 3 day gorilla trekking Uganda trip worth it?
Absolutely. Mountain gorillas are among the rarest animals on earth, with only just over 1,000 left in the wild, and your permit fee helps fund the rangers and communities that protect them. Even one hour with a gorilla family is something most visitors call the highlight of their lives.
Which is better for gorilla trekking, Uganda or Rwanda?
Both are excellent and safe. Uganda's permit costs US$800 against Rwanda's US$1,500, and Uganda has more gorilla families to visit. Rwanda's park is closer to Kigali airport. Starting in Kigali and trekking in Uganda gives you the best of both.
