Bwindi Gorilla Sectors Compared: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo

August 26, 2026

Bwindi gorilla sectors are the four trekking bases of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each one has its own habituated gorilla families, its own terrain and its own lodges, and your permit is tied to just one of them. Choosing well shapes your whole trip, from how hard the trek feels to where you sleep the night before.

We plan gorilla safaris into all four sectors every year, so this guide is written from the ground, not from a brochure. Below we compare the Bwindi gorilla sectors side by side, then walk through each one so you can match the right sector to your fitness, budget and travel route.

Bwindi Gorilla Sectors at a Glance

If you only have a minute, this table gives you the key differences between the four Bwindi gorilla sectors. The sections that follow explain each one in more detail.

Sector Location in the park Trek difficulty Best for Nearest airstrip
Buhoma North Moderate First-time trekkers, lodge choice, the Batwa experience Kihihi (about 1 hour)
Ruhija East, highest point Moderate to challenging Birders, cooler weather, quieter trails Kihihi (about 2 to 3 hours)
Rushaga South Moderate to challenging Permit availability, the Gorilla Habituation Experience Kisoro (about 1 to 1.5 hours)
Nkuringo Southwest, on a ridge Challenging Fit trekkers, views of the Virunga volcanoes Kisoro (about 1 hour)

Why Bwindi Is Divided Into Four Sectors

Bwindi covers about 321 square kilometres of steep, forested hills in southwestern Uganda, and it is home to roughly half of the world's mountain gorillas. No single trailhead could reach all of the park's habituated families, so the Uganda Wildlife Authority runs trekking from four separate bases.

Each of the Bwindi gorilla sectors has its own ranger post, briefing area and group of families. The forest is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is one reason visitor numbers per family are kept so low.

The most important point is this: a gorilla permit is issued for one specific sector and cannot be used in another. If your permit is for Rushaga, you trek from Rushaga. That is why the sector decision has to come first, before you book a lodge or plan your road route.

Sleeping in the wrong sector can mean a pre-dawn drive of two to four hours on mountain roads to reach your briefing on time. We always match the lodge to the permit, never the other way round.

Buhoma Sector: The Original Gorilla Trekking Base

Buhoma, in the north of the park, is where gorilla tourism in Uganda began. The Mubare family was the first group in Bwindi to be habituated, and it welcomed its first visitors in 1993. Today Buhoma is the most developed of the Bwindi gorilla sectors, with the park headquarters, the widest choice of lodges and the best-known road access.

Families trekked from Buhoma include Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura and Katwe. Trails here are generally gentler than in the south, and treks commonly last two to four hours return, although no Bwindi trek is ever guaranteed to be short.

Why choose Buhoma over the other Bwindi gorilla sectors

  • Best range of accommodation, from community-run guesthouses to luxury lodges
  • Most predictable logistics for a first gorilla trek
  • Close to the Batwa cultural experience, which tells the story of the forest's first people
  • Easy to combine with Queen Elizabeth National Park and its tree-climbing lions in Ishasha

If Buhoma suits you, our guide to where to stay in Buhoma sector compares the lodges by budget and walking distance to the briefing point.

Ruhija Sector: High Altitude and Superb Birding

Ruhija sits on the eastern side of Bwindi at around 2,350 metres, the highest of the four trekking bases. Mornings are cool and often misty, so pack a warm layer even in the dry season. The village is small and quiet, with fewer lodges than Buhoma or Rushaga.

Families trekked from Ruhija, the quietest of the Bwindi gorilla sectors, include Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguliro and Mukiza. The altitude adds effort, and some treks drop steeply into the valley before the climb back up, so a reasonable level of fitness helps.

Ruhija's real bonus is birdlife. The trail down to the Mubwindi Swamp is one of the best places in Uganda for Albertine Rift endemics, and it is a key site for the rare African green broadbill. Read more in our guide to birding in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Rushaga Sector: The Most Gorilla Families

Rushaga, in the south of the park, has more habituated families than any of the other Bwindi gorilla sectors. That makes it the easiest of the Bwindi gorilla sectors for permit availability, especially if you are booking a few months out rather than a year ahead.

Families trekked from Rushaga include Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Rwigi and Mucunguzi. Terrain varies a lot from family to family, and with so many groups the rangers have more room to match trekkers to a family that suits their pace.

The Gorilla Habituation Experience

Rushaga is where the Gorilla Habituation Experience takes place. Instead of the standard one hour, you spend up to four hours with a family that is still getting used to people, alongside the researchers and rangers doing the work. Only four visitors join each group per day, so it sells out early.

The habituation permit costs US$1,500 for foreign non-residents until 31 December 2026, rising to US$1,800 from 1 January 2027. Our page on gorilla permit prices sets out every rate in one place.

Nkuringo Sector: The Most Dramatic Views

Nkuringo is the most scenic of the Bwindi gorilla sectors. It sits on a high ridge in the southwest of the park, looking across to the Virunga volcanoes on the borders of Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. On a clear morning the view alone is worth the journey.

It is also widely considered the toughest of the Bwindi gorilla sectors. The families usually live in the valley well below the ridge, so you descend steeply into the forest and then climb all the way back out. Families trekked from Nkuringo include the Nkuringo, Christmas and Bushaho groups.

Choose Nkuringo if you are fit, enjoy a proper hike and want fewer people on the trail. Hire a porter, take your time on the climb out, and you will be rewarded with one of the most memorable treks in East Africa.

Gorilla Permits Across the Bwindi Gorilla Sectors

The permit price is the same in all Bwindi gorilla sectors. What changes is how many permits are available each day, which depends on the number of habituated families. Each family can be visited by a maximum of eight people per day.

Permit type (per person) Price
Gorilla trekking, foreign non-resident US$800
Gorilla trekking, foreign non-resident, low season (April, May, November) US$600
Gorilla trekking, foreign resident US$700
Gorilla trekking, East African citizen UGX 300,000
Gorilla Habituation Experience, foreign non-resident (Rushaga) US$1,500 until 31 Dec 2026; US$1,800 from 1 Jan 2027

Trekkers must be at least 15 years old. For the peak months of June to September and December to February, book your permit three to six months ahead, and six to twelve months ahead for the habituation experience. Our full guide to gorilla trekking permits in Uganda covers booking rules and what happens if you fall ill.

Getting to the Bwindi Gorilla Sectors

Where you are coming from often decides which of the Bwindi gorilla sectors suits you best. Drive times below are approximate and depend on road conditions and the season.

  • Buhoma: about 8 to 10 hours by road from Kampala or Entebbe, or a short scheduled or charter flight to Kihihi airstrip followed by about one hour's drive. Easy to reach from Queen Elizabeth National Park.
  • Ruhija: about 8 to 9 hours by road from Kampala. It works well as a link between Queen Elizabeth National Park and the south of the park.
  • Rushaga: about 9 to 10 hours from Kampala, or about 4 to 5 hours from Kigali in Rwanda. Fly-in guests use Kisoro airstrip.
  • Nkuringo: similar to Rushaga, with Kisoro town about an hour away. Close to Lake Bunyonyi and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Travelers flying into Kigali often choose Rushaga or Nkuringo because the drive is much shorter than coming from Entebbe. Our guide on how to get to Bwindi covers every road and air option in detail.

Best Time to Trek in Each Sector

All four Bwindi gorilla sectors share the same broad seasons. The drier months of June to September and December to February bring firmer trails and are the busiest time for permits. Rain can fall at any time of year in a rainforest, so pack a waterproof jacket whatever the month.

Ruhija, being highest, is the coolest and mistiest. Nkuringo's steep slopes become slippery after heavy rain, which adds to the effort on the climb back out. Buhoma and Rushaga generally stay the most manageable in the wetter months.

The quieter months of April, May and November bring lush forest, fewer visitors and lower permit prices. For a month-by-month view, see our guide to the best time to visit Bwindi for gorilla trekking.

How to Prepare for the Bwindi Gorilla Sectors

Trails in the Bwindi gorilla sectors run between roughly 1,160 and 2,607 metres above sea level, on steep, muddy ground under a thick canopy. Whichever sector you choose, a few weeks of walking, hiking or stair climbing before your trip will make the day far more enjoyable.

  • Hire a porter. They carry your bag, steady you on slopes and earn an important income for local families.
  • Wear waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long trousers and long sleeves.
  • Bring gardening gloves for gripping vines and nettles on steep sections.
  • Use a walking stick, usually handed out at the briefing point.
  • Carry water and a packed lunch, since treks can run longer than planned.

Once you reach the gorillas, you spend one hour with them, keeping at least seven metres away. If you have a cough, cold or fever, tell your guide, because gorillas can catch human illnesses. Rangers also take fitness into account when assigning families each morning, so let them know if you have mobility concerns.

Combining Two Sectors for Double Gorilla Trekking

If you cannot decide between the Bwindi gorilla sectors, you do not have to. Many of our guests book two treks in two different sectors, meeting two different families on two separate days. Each trek needs its own permit.

  • Rushaga and Nkuringo: the most popular pairing, since the two southern sectors are close together and offer real contrast in terrain.
  • Buhoma and Ruhija: a gentler combination, mixing the park's most established base with its best birding.

Allow at least three to four days in the Bwindi area for a double trek, including travel between sectors. Find out more in our guide to mountain gorilla double trekking in Uganda.

Which Bwindi Gorilla Sector Is Right for You?

There is no single best choice among the Bwindi gorilla sectors. The right one depends on who you are and how you are travelling. Here is how we usually advise our guests:

  • First gorilla trek, or travelling with older family members: Buhoma.
  • Keen birder, or happy with cooler and quieter mornings: Ruhija.
  • Booking at shorter notice, or wanting the habituation experience: Rushaga.
  • Fit, adventurous and after the best views: Nkuringo.
  • Flying into Kigali: Rushaga or Nkuringo.
  • Combining with Queen Elizabeth National Park: Buhoma or Ruhija.

A first-time trekker with reasonable fitness can manage any sector, including Nkuringo, as long as they come prepared for a long day. Fitness matters far more than experience. To learn more about the groups themselves, read our guide to gorilla families in Bwindi and Mgahinga, or explore the park as a whole in our Bwindi Impenetrable Forest guide.
