A Uganda fly-in safari is the most comfortable way to see mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and Uganda's big game in a short time. Instead of spending 8 to 10 hours on the road between parks, you take a scenic flight of about an hour and arrive rested, with more time for the wildlife.
At Tulambule Uganda Safaris, we plan fly-in safaris for travellers from the United States, Canada and Europe who have limited vacation days and want to make every one of them count. This guide explains how a Uganda fly-in safari works, the routes, luggage rules, the best trip lengths, and how to plan one from home.
Why fly:
- Save time: about 1 hour in the air instead of 8 to 10 hours on the road to Bwindi
- Arrive fresh: trek gorillas or track chimps without a long drive the day before
- See more: combine gorillas, chimps and big game in a week or less
- Fly from Entebbe: scheduled flights to Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale and Murchison Falls
- Pack light: 15 kg (33 lb) per person in a soft bag, hand luggage included

What Is a Uganda Fly-In Safari?
On a Uganda fly-in safari, you travel between Entebbe and the national parks on small, scheduled light aircraft instead of by road. A Tulambule driver-guide meets you at each airstrip in a 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof and takes you to your lodge, game drives and activities.
You can fly the whole way, or mix flights and road travel. Many of our guests drive the scenic, shorter stretches and fly the long ones, such as Entebbe to Bwindi. It is the same idea behind our East Africa fly-in guide, applied to Uganda's own parks.
Uganda Fly-In Safari Routes and Airstrips
Uganda's main domestic carrier for safari travellers is AeroLink Uganda, which flies light aircraft from Entebbe International Airport to airstrips near every major park. Flights take about 1 to 1.5 hours.
| Airstrip | For | What You Can Do |
|---|---|---|
| Kihihi | Northern Bwindi (Buhoma, Ruhija) and Ishasha | Gorilla trekking and the tree-climbing lions |
| Kisoro | Southern Bwindi (Rushaga, Nkuringo) and Mgahinga | Gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, the Batwa Trail |
| Kasese | Kibale Forest and Queen Elizabeth | Chimpanzee trekking, Kazinga Channel cruise, game drives |
| Pakuba, Chobe or Bugungu | Murchison Falls | Nile cruise to the falls, game drives, the Top of the Falls |

Park-to-Park Flights
You don't always need to return to Entebbe between parks. AeroLink also connects Kisoro, Kihihi and Kasese, and runs direct flights from Murchison Falls to Kasese and Kihihi. This makes a Uganda fly-in safari across the whole country possible in a week or ten days.
Good to Know Before You Book
- Seasonal routes: scheduled Murchison Falls flights do not operate in March, April, May and November, and need a minimum number of passengers. In those months we fly you to the west and drive to Murchison, or arrange a charter.
- Minimum numbers: some routes need at least 2 or 4 passengers to operate. We check this when we book and plan an alternative if needed.
- Morning flights: mountain weather is clearest in the morning, so most western flights leave early.
- Private charters: if the schedule doesn't fit your dates or route, we can arrange a private plane.
Fly-In vs Road Safari: How Much Time Do You Save?
| Route | By Road | By Air |
|---|---|---|
| Entebbe to Bwindi (Buhoma or Rushaga) | 8 to 10 hours | About 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Entebbe to Kibale or Queen Elizabeth | 6 to 7 hours | About 1 to 1.5 hours |
| Entebbe to Murchison Falls | 5 to 6 hours | About 1 hour |
| Murchison Falls to Kibale or Queen Elizabeth | 7 to 8 hours | Direct flight |
A road safari has its own rewards: you see villages, tea estates and crater lakes between the parks, and it costs less. Our budget Uganda safaris are all by road. A Uganda fly-in safari costs more, but it gives you back whole days of your trip, which matters most when your vacation time is short.

How Many Days Do You Need?
3 Days: The Classic Fly-In Gorilla Safari
Fly to Bwindi on day one, trek the gorillas on day two and fly back on day three. It is our most popular short trip, and the 3 Days Fly-In Gorilla Safari Uganda gives you a relaxed buffer either side of your trek.
4 to 5 Days: Gorillas and Chimpanzees
Fly to Kasese for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, drive to Bwindi through Queen Elizabeth, then fly back to Entebbe from Kihihi. See our 4-Day Fly-In Uganda Safari: Gorillas and Chimpanzees.
7 to 10 Days: The Best of Uganda
For a 7 to 10-day Uganda fly-in safari, add Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth for big game, the Nile and the tree-climbing lions, using park-to-park flights to keep the drives short. This is the trip most first-time visitors from the US choose.
Luggage Rules on a Uganda Fly-In Safari
Small aircraft mean strict weight limits, so packing light is the one rule every Uganda fly-in safari guest must follow:
- 15 kg (33 lb) per person, including hand luggage and camera gear
- Soft bags only, such as duffel bags, so they fit in the small aircraft. Hard suitcases are not accepted.
- Extra luggage can be carried for a fee if space allows, or you can book extra space in advance
- Leave the rest in Entebbe: we can store spare luggage until you return
Our Uganda safari packing list shows how to pack light without missing the essentials.
What to Expect on Your Uganda Fly-In Safari Flight Day
- Check-in is 90 minutes before departure at Entebbe International Airport, and 45 minutes before at the bush airstrips. Your driver handles the timing.
- The aircraft is usually a Cessna Grand Caravan, a reliable single-engine plane with large windows, ideal for aerial views.
- Light aircraft feel bumpier than airliners, especially over the mountains. If you are prone to motion sickness, take something before you fly.
- You may be asked your weight, which helps the pilot balance the plane safely.
- Your guide meets you at the airstrip and your safari begins straight away.

Planning a Uganda Fly-In Safari from the USA
There are no direct flights from the United States to Uganda, but connections are easy. Most American travellers fly into Entebbe International Airport via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam or Brussels, with a total journey time of about 20 to 30 hours.
- Arrive a day early: we recommend one night in Entebbe after your international flight, so a delay never costs you a domestic flight or a gorilla permit.
- Visa: US citizens apply for the Uganda eVisa online before travel. See our Uganda visa requirements guide.
- Health: a yellow fever certificate is required, and malaria tablets are recommended.
- Safety: read our honest guide on whether Uganda is safe for safari.
- Money: US dollars are widely used. Bring clean notes printed after 2013, and small bills for tipping.
- Easy booking: we quote in US dollars and send a secure WeTravel payment link, and our Kampala team answers on WhatsApp.

Book Your Gorilla Permit First
On any Uganda fly-in safari that includes gorillas, the permit comes first. We match your permit sector to the right airstrip: Kihihi for Buhoma and Ruhija, Kisoro for Rushaga and Nkuringo. Uganda Fly-In Safari: Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Uganda fly-in safari safe?
Yes. Scheduled domestic flights use well-maintained light aircraft flown by experienced pilots, and land on established airstrips near the parks. Flights can feel bumpier than airliners, which is normal.
How long are domestic flights in Uganda?
Most flights from Entebbe to the parks take about 1 to 1.5 hours, compared with 5 to 10 hours by road.
Can I fly to Bwindi to see the gorillas?
Yes. Fly to Kihihi for the Buhoma and Ruhija sectors, or to Kisoro for Rushaga, Nkuringo and Mgahinga. Your guide meets you at the airstrip.
What is the luggage limit on domestic flights?
15 kg (33 lb) per person in a soft bag, including hand luggage. Extra luggage can be stored in Entebbe.
Can I combine flying and driving?
Yes. Many travellers fly the longest legs, such as Entebbe to Bwindi, and drive the shorter, scenic sections between parks.
Do flights run all year?
Flights to Bwindi, Kibale and Queen Elizabeth run year-round. Scheduled Murchison Falls flights do not operate in March, April, May and November, when we drive or arrange a charter instead.
