Uganda Group Tours: 16 Unforgettable Shared Safaris and Departures

January 13, 2026

Uganda group tours are the easiest way to share the gorillas, chimpanzees, lions and waterfalls of the Pearl of Africa with the people you travel with, while splitting the cost of the vehicle and guide. Whether you are a school, a church, a company, a family or a group of friends, a well-planned group safari is great value and a lot of fun.

This guide explains everything about Uganda group tours: the different types, our most popular group itineraries, what they cost, group sizes and vehicles, and how to plan a smooth trip. It is written by our team at Tulambule, a licensed Ugandan tour operator that has planned group safaris since 2014.

Uganda Group Tours: Quick Answer

There are two main kinds of Uganda group tours. A private group tour is planned only for your own group, on your dates. A joining group tour (also called a shared or scheduled departure) puts small numbers of travellers together on a set itinerary, so solo travellers and couples can share costs too.

Type of group tour Best for Typical group size
Private group tour Friends, families, churches, companies 4 to 30 or more
Joining group tour Solo travellers and couples About 4 to 7
School and student tour Schools, universities, study trips 20 to 60 or more
Corporate and team tour Staff retreats, incentives, conferences 10 to 50 or more
Special interest tour Birders, photographers, hikers 4 to 12

Why Choose Uganda Group Tours?

Travelling as a group changes the feel of a safari. You share the excitement of the first lion or the first gorilla, and the evenings around the fire become part of the story. There are practical benefits too:

  • Lower cost per person: the vehicle, fuel and guide are shared, so each person pays less than on a private trip for one or two.
  • Less planning for you: we book the permits, lodges, meals and transport for everyone, and send one clear quotation.
  • Safety and support: an experienced driver-guide stays with your group from arrival to departure.
  • Shared memories: group trips are ideal for reunions, celebrations, team building and learning together.

Uganda is a natural fit for groups. In one trip you can trek mountain gorillas, track chimpanzees, cruise past hippos, see tree-climbing lions and stand at the source of the Nile. Distances are manageable, and the country is famous for its warm welcome.

Types of Uganda Group Tours

Every group is different, so we shape our Uganda group tours around who is travelling and what they want to get out of it.

School and Student Group Tours

Our student tours combine learning with fun. Schools and universities visit national parks, the source of the Nile, historical and cultural sites, the equator and the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre in Entebbe. We plan safe, age-appropriate activities, budget-friendly accommodation and reliable buses or coasters.

Teachers often use these trips for geography, biology, history and tourism studies. Short trips from Kampala, such as a 1-day Jinja tour or a Kampala city tour, work well for younger students.

Church and Faith Group Tours

Churches and fellowship groups travel with us for retreats, mission follow-ups and celebrations. We can include Sunday services, the Uganda Martyrs Shrine at Namugongo, community visits and quiet time by a lake, alongside wildlife and scenery.

Corporate and Team Building Tours

Companies use Uganda group tours for staff retreats, incentive trips and end-of-year celebrations. Popular choices include a weekend at a lakeside resort, rafting or a team challenge in Jinja, and short safaris to Lake Mburo or Murchison Falls. For an international option, see our Zanzibar corporate group holiday.

Family and Reunion Group Tours

Extended families and reunions love the shared experience of a safari. We plan routes with shorter drives, family-friendly lodges and activities for all ages. Read our guide to Uganda family safaris and gorilla trekking with children.

Senior Group Tours

Senior groups enjoy a gentler pace, comfortable lodges, fewer early starts and activities that need less energy, such as boat cruises and game drives. Gorilla trekking is still possible with porters and, where needed, a sedan chair. See Uganda safaris for elderly travellers and gorilla trekking for older travellers.

Adventure Group Tours

Active groups can raft the Nile, abseil beside Sipi Falls, hike the Rwenzori or Mount Elgon, kayak, quad bike and zip-line. These trips need a reasonable level of fitness. Explore our Uganda adventure safaris and white-water rafting in Jinja.

Birding and Photography Group Tours

Uganda has more than 1,000 bird species, including the shoebill, so it is a top birding destination. Specialist group tours are timed for the best light and the most active birding hours, with expert guides. See our Uganda birding tours and the 5-day Uganda birding tour.

Serious birders and photographers may find a general group trip frustrating, so we recommend a dedicated tour or a private safari built around your interest.

Groups of Ugandans and East Africans

Many of our groups are Ugandans and East Africans exploring their own region at resident rates, which are much lower than foreign rates. Read gorilla trekking for Ugandans and Uganda gorilla safaris for East Africans.

Private Group Tours vs Joining Group Tours

Private group tour Joining group tour
Who travels Only your group You plus other travellers
Dates Any dates you choose Set departure dates
Itinerary Fully tailor-made Fixed route
Cost Lower per person as the group grows Shared vehicle cost for small parties
Best for Groups of 4 or more who know each other Solo travellers and couples

Joining group tours need a minimum number of travellers to run. If a departure does not fill, we offer another date or a private version of the same trip. Travelling alone? Our guide to solo Uganda gorilla safaris explains your options, and our small group Uganda safari is an 8-day example.

Popular Uganda Group Tour Itineraries

These are the itineraries our groups book most often. Each one can run as a private group tour, and we adjust the lodges and activities to your budget.

How Much Do Uganda Group Tours Cost?

The price of Uganda group tours depends on the size of your group, the number of days, the standard of accommodation and the activities you choose. As a guide, per person and per day:

Travel style Approximate cost per person per day What to expect
Budget From about US$150 Simple, clean lodges and campsites, shared rooms
Mid-range About US$200 to US$350 Comfortable lodges with en-suite rooms
Luxury US$400 and more Top lodges, and sometimes domestic flights

These figures exclude permits for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking, which are charged at cost. For foreign non-residents, a Uganda gorilla permit is US$800 and a Kibale chimpanzee permit is US$250. Ugandans and East Africans pay much lower resident rates. See the full list in Uganda national parks activities and fees and Uganda gorilla trekking permits.

How Group Size Changes the Price

The vehicle, fuel and driver-guide make up a large part of any safari. On a group tour these costs are shared, so the price per person falls as the group grows, up to the vehicle's capacity. Lodges, meals, park entry and permits are charged per person, so they stay the same whatever the group size.

Single travellers who want a room of their own pay a single supplement, while those happy to share a twin room save money. For more ways to save, read our guide to budget Uganda safaris.

What Is Usually Included

  • Transport in a safari vehicle or bus with an English-speaking driver-guide
  • Accommodation and meals as shown in the itinerary
  • Park entry fees, guided activities and the permits you book
  • Boat cruises and game drives on the itinerary
  • Drinking water on game drives and in the vehicle

Usually not included: international flights, visas, travel insurance, drinks at lodges, tips and personal expenses.

Group Size, Vehicles and Comfort

Two Rothschild giraffes on the savannah of Murchison Falls National Park

Most Uganda group tours use a 4x4 safari vehicle, such as a stretch Land Cruiser or a safari van, with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography. Each vehicle takes up to 7 passengers, but 4 to 6 is more comfortable, because luggage space is limited.

Larger groups travel in several safari vehicles, which also gives everyone a window seat on game drives. For big school and church groups, we use comfortable coaster buses for long road transfers and 4x4 vehicles for game drives inside the parks.

Group size also matters for some activities. Gorilla trekking groups are limited to 8 visitors per gorilla family, so bigger groups trek in several small groups on the same day. Chimpanzee trekking groups are kept small too.

Sample 7-Day Uganda Group Tour Itinerary

This is a typical route for Uganda group tours, planned for a mid-range private group of 6 to 12 people who want gorillas, chimpanzees and big game in one week. We adjust it for every group.

  • Day 1, Entebbe or Kampala to Kibale: meet your guide and drive west through tea estates to Fort Portal and Kibale Forest.
  • Day 2, Kibale Forest: morning chimpanzee trekking, then an afternoon walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for monkeys and birds.
  • Day 3, Queen Elizabeth National Park: drive south with a game drive on the way, then settle into your lodge near the Kazinga Channel.
  • Day 4, Queen Elizabeth National Park: early game drive for lions, elephants and buffalo, and an afternoon boat cruise past hippos and crocodiles.
  • Day 5, Ishasha to Bwindi: look for tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, then continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
  • Day 6, Bwindi gorilla trekking: your group splits into small trekking groups to spend one hour with mountain gorillas, followed by an optional community walk.
  • Day 7, Bwindi to Kampala or Entebbe: drive back via Mbarara, or fly from a nearby airstrip to save time.

How to Plan a Uganda Group Tour

  1. Agree on dates and numbers: confirm who is coming, the travel dates and a rough budget.
  2. Choose a group leader: one contact person makes communication and payments much easier.
  3. Pick the itinerary: choose one of our trips or ask us to design one. Use our Build My Safari form to start.
  4. Book permits early: gorilla permits are limited, and large groups need several permits on the same day, so we recommend booking 4 to 6 months ahead.
  5. Share a rooming list: tell us who is sharing, and about any dietary or medical needs.
  6. Prepare for the trip: check visas and vaccinations, and read our gorilla trekking packing list.

Age and Fitness Requirements

There is no general minimum age for Uganda group tours. However, gorilla trekking is only for visitors aged 15 and over, and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is for those aged 12 and over. Younger travellers can enjoy game drives, boat cruises and nature walks instead.

Gorilla trekking can take from one to several hours through steep forest. If your group has a mix of fitness levels, we can request easier gorilla families and arrange porters for everyone who wants one.

Tips for a Smooth Group Safari in Uganda

  • Get travel insurance: on all Uganda group tours, every traveller should have cover for medical care and evacuation, especially for gorilla trekking.
  • Collect payments early: a single deposit for the whole group lets us secure permits and rooms quickly.
  • Agree on the pace: discuss early starts, drive times and free time before you travel, so expectations match.
  • Bring cash for tips and extras: US dollars or Uganda shillings for guides, porters, drinks and crafts.
  • Stay connected: local SIM cards work in most areas, though signal is weak in some forests and parks.
  • Respect wildlife and communities: keep voices low near animals, follow your guide and ask before taking photos of people.
  • Check safety advice: read Is Uganda safe for safari? and the Uganda visa requirements.

Best Time for Uganda Group Tours

Uganda group tours run all year. The dry seasons from June to September and December to February are the most popular, with firmer trails and easier game viewing. They also match school holidays in many countries, so book early for these months.

The rainy seasons in March to May and October to November bring green scenery, fewer visitors and lower lodge rates, which can make a big difference for large groups. Read more about the best time to visit Uganda.

Uganda Group Tours: FAQs

Are Uganda group tours cheaper than private safaris?

Yes, usually. The vehicle, fuel and guide are shared, so the cost per person falls. Lodges, meals, park fees and permits cost the same per person either way.

How many people can join a Uganda group tour?

Each safari vehicle takes up to 7 passengers, and 4 to 6 is most comfortable. We use several vehicles or a bus for larger groups, so there is no real upper limit.

Can a solo traveller join a group tour in Uganda?

Yes. Joining group tours let solo travellers share the vehicle cost with others. If no group fits your dates, we can plan a private trip for you.

How much does a Uganda group tour cost?

As a guide, from about US$150 per person per day on a budget trip, about US$200 to US$350 mid-range, and US$400 or more for luxury. Gorilla and chimpanzee permits are extra.

Is there a minimum age for Uganda group tours?

There is no general minimum age, but gorilla trekking is for ages 15 and over and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale for ages 12 and over.

Do you organise school and corporate group tours?

Yes. We plan educational trips for schools and universities, and retreats, incentives and team building trips for companies, with suitable buses and accommodation.

How far ahead should a group book?

Book 4 to 6 months ahead if your trip includes gorilla trekking, as large groups need several permits for the same day. Short trips without permits can be arranged at shorter notice.

Can we combine Uganda and Rwanda on a group tour?

Yes. Many groups combine both countries, especially for gorilla trekking and Rwanda's culture, and the East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya.
